It has always worked for me, I have never had any issues apart from the login. I have just started it now and I can connect. Try reinstalling it.
JAM makes JoinMarket really easy, it is worth spending time on it.

Apparently it has something to do with the version of bitcoin core. It gives problems with 26.0
