Didn't they provide a narrative to why they were doing so? To avoid a larger explosion?
It went something like this (simplified version). They had to vent it to prevent a larger explosion. But then, once they vented it, they had pools of the shit on the ground and they had to burn it before it spread or seeped into the water table or somesuch other bullshit.
