Misconception: Japan is expensive.

At one point, ¥100 = $1.00. Today, ¥100 = $0.67, however Japan is still in the mindset that ¥100 = $1.00, therefore everything is 30% less expense in Japan.

Also, tipping is not expected. I was amazed by the inexpensive food, hotels, products, etc. The most expensive part was the airplane to get there.

2L of Jim Beam costs the equivalent of NZ$41 in Japan at a Tax Free shop. In New Zealand duty free airport shops the lowest deal ever found was NZ$59 (more typically it is NZ$70). I saved over 30% by buying in Japan and putting them into my checked luggage.
