There are far too many customers for any authority to do anything to you personally with your face pic. Your photo is being taken all the time, at airports, at and cctv street camera, atm, when you walk in most shops. Nobody cares unless you've got an arrest warrant or something. But sure, if it becomes like china and they use ai etc to do social credit, that is a problem, but it's hard for western governments to do that without getting voted out.

Stupid take. It’s not about authorities. It’s about your lack of consent to being recorded and then having that data monetized. You think it’s only there for shoplifting? Guarantee they sell it to data brokers which then gets aggregated even further and ultimately builds your national profile.
