My dad used to have one of those Kübelwagen (last pic). Loved that thing!
Saw one in the wild last summer. Owners kept it in perfect condition. Such a fun car.
100% fun vehicle and robust! I used to work on the engine with my dad and it was pretty straight forward. Just like the OG Beetle.
Did he eventually sell it?
He probably did. Haven't heard from him in like 20 years.

A dream car has always been something vintage with personality and character. They definitely don’t make em like this anymore
Yes. Same can be said about a lot of areas. But I have seen some glimmers of hope in fashion and architecture, for example. A return to beautiful auto design (and build quality) would be another welcomed shift for sure.
When do you think we’ll see the first non-slop designs in production?
There are a few brands that still design cars with character, like Porsche. And there are certain lines that have character, like the recent Ford Broncos. But even among a lot of the luxury brands the build quality has slipped.
That said, the X thread I shared here the other day talking about recent legislation indicating a shift in *regulatory enforcement* could mean that, for the first time in decades, we could see meaningful changes in design again.
I think it will take some time to see whether auto manufacturers recognize the opportunity on the design side. And I think it will take further saturation of bitcoin into the economy for there to be substantive improvements in build quality. Other factors also at play to be sure, but speaking broadly this is my analysis.
Here is the thread again, in case you didn't see it. Big if true:
