Halloween does not have its origins in the ancient pagan festival of Samhain. We wouldn’t know about the festival at all were it not for Medieval Irish monks who recorded its existence nearly a millennia after it ceased to be observed. Halloween has always been a distinctly Christian holy day with a rich history. Our household is pushing through the noise of an increasingly neo-pagan and commercialized American Halloween to find the signal of historic Hallowtide.

I have not yet come across any solid books on this topic. Most seem to recycle the same unsubstantiated claims about pagan origins.
