Hey friends, this is how I recommend saving lettuce seeds for ease and joy!

As with most plants, there are numerous ways to save lettuce seeds, but this results in the easiest cleaning experience.

Lettuce flowers sequentially so seeds dont all ripen at once. You get the seeds that are exactly ripe now, and the plant can continue flowering and ripening seeds. Technically, you can keep coming back for more seeds every few days if you want!

I winnow larger amounts of seeds with a fan, but most people just need a small amount of seeds, and our breath or a light breeze is perfect!

I got 4 peach trees that around 5 years old, two of which kind of grew by accident

I also got a bunch of Tipuana Tipus, Judas Trees, and Acacias which hopefully this year provide substantial shade to my garden.

Trying to sprout apples and mulberry this year, too.

😍 He's just having fun hanging out with pops... all the while practicing his numbers, counting, learning measuring, balance, motor skills, singing and breathing fresh air in the sunshine.

We laugh, play and dream together while we work. It's these moments when it all comes together and feels just right. Often enough to know we made the right life decisions, rare enough to appreciate and hold precious.

Starting from seed has so many advantages. Stronger healthier trees, cheaper to acquire, genetic variety.

If you have the space, definitely start some from seed. I can understand getting a more mature tree if space is an issue.

More than half of the trees I've planted are grown from seed, I guesstimate.

Hundreds of trees, dozens of species of tree seeds grown over the last 8 years. Sooo worth the wait...

Unfortunately, my slash piles are so large, they get too hot to get close enough to quench with just a 5 gallon bucket. Trash pump arriving this week to hopefully change this

Here's a thought. Do your burn with a dry pile when it starts raining a good rain. When it's down to coals spread it out really thin with a rake and let the rain put it out. I've done that before and it works well.

I've read and heard many times that adding straight biochar without first loading with microbes can decrease garden output for a few years as the charcoal has massive capacity to absorb nutrients from the soil system. The best practice I've heard I'd to use something like KNF or some kind of fermentation to "preload" the char before adding it your garden.

Do you have any thoughts or experience with that?

Also I should mention i usually tend to incorporate my "raw" charcoal in the soil in winter and by spring or summer when I'm planting its well innoculated. I also incorporate raw charcoal in the fall when I plant favas and garlic and it hasn't been a problem.

Yes, its true. But it depends what time of year, where in the soil profile, how close to the roots it is and how much you add. I don't preload my char. I let nature do it. I don't get to heady about the science, that's just my style and it works well for me and my plants. 💚🤗

There are a lot of fancy ways to make Biochar, but I prefer the simple slash pile method.

We burn slash (dead branches) anyway to reduce hazardous fuels around our home, so why not make charcoal for the garden!?

Simply burn until the sticks become charcoal, spread it out and then extinguish the coals.

It can take some tending to move branches on the sides that aren't burning hot onto the pile.

Lots of people make biochar a science, but I tend to be more of an artist and KISS.

After the charcoal has cooled, I put it in compost, add it as a layer in lasagna beds, put in planting holes with trees in the winter or dig into beds I am tilling. Only then does it become biochar, once the microbes have inhabited it.

Helleborus was used to cure epilepsy. Although right dosage was difficult to determine. So not ornamental soly but a rich history in pharmacopoeia
