It took me a while to grok #nostr- for the longest time the internet was viewed as being a better newspaper, then someone started to figure out how to pass structured data on that ‘newspaper layer’ and the rest is history.

The current web was great (still great) but it wasn’t yet everything we needed. People have been saying that we’ve been missing an ‘identity’ or ‘trust’ layer. I agreed kinda, but the penny dropped for me with #nostr is that we were missing a ‘socioeconomic layer’ - it’s not about trust/identity but the abilities to independently attribute and transact. Trust and economics is then built on those combined abilities.

Yeah, don’t forget the signed part 🙂

I am trying to come up with some generic slides of why anyone should care about #nostr. These two slides compare ‘Traditional Platform Architecture’ to what I am calling the ‘New Protocol Architecture’ (also known as #nostr) - you can read the bullet points. Pls let me know if this makes sense or resonates (or not)

Received while in Aisle 3 of the grocery store.

Yesterday while grocery shopping with my wife, I received a 100k zap ($80 CAD). I showed it to my wife and we celebrated by buying an extra rack of ribs.

What a time to be alive!

Just something I cooked up. I realized that sending a challenge/response via encrypted dm gives same or better security assurance than a signed challenge going over the clear.

I just implemented sign in with nostr dm. Nothing required except a nostr client as Authenticator. Still hours old but you can try at https://openbalance.app and follow the “Access your Wallet” link.

Definitely the close association with payments (zaps and Cashu tokens). Must easier to impose a cost and/or generate revenue.

Also, keeping the relays as dumb as possible, similar to dumb internet routers that can’t inspect packets.
