There are economic theories that suggest that a nations power isn't limited to its currency but instead its ability to muster its people to action/production. So they create a ton of money to what they think is required to match their estimated productivity potential and then collect taxes to offset the difference.
I'm not an economist so I might be missing some major bits, but this is my understanding
Taxes are just fiscal policy. Even if we have a digital national currency we could just burn excess capital instead of charging taxes.
