Fediverse servers do not ask people to verify their identity. There is an optional self-verification system available, but that's just for those who want to use it.

The Fediverse is protected from takeover as long as we are spread out on many servers. If one server dominates, takeovers become easier.
Mastodon.social is currently 25.5% of the active Fediverse. This proportion is way too large and seems to be increasing.
Larger servers also tend to have worse moderation and are harder to defederate, threatening safety.

If your main timeline on Mastodon is getting too crowded, you can use the Lists feature to split it into several smaller themed mini-timelines. You can then dip into a particular timeline when you want to see accounts on that topic.

The server mastodon.social is currently down due to technical problems at their hosting provider. However, other servers on Mastodon and the Fediverse are working fine because they are totally independent.
This is one of the many advantages of a decentralised network, one server going down doesn't affect the others. There are also other even more important reasons why this place is spread out on lots of servers:
