We must cultivate our garden | Statistics and Data Science https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sortition

Oh yes, there are dozens of us! 😂

Just cracked it open for another read through. It made a big impression on me as well

It is, surely, good that there are synthetic medicines to ease the surplus of pain, telephones to break through loneliness, and electric lights to keep the wayfarer from stumbling.

There is, though, something wrong when we use medicine to deaden our sensitivity, when we obliterate solitude with electronics and blind ourselves with the very lights we devised to help us see. There is nothing wrong with our artifacts; there is something wrong with us; we have lost sight of the sense, the purpose of our production and our products.

Do I understand correctly that with DVMs the service provider has to trust that the requestor will pay them after delivery?

That seems problematic (if correct)

If nostr becomes the platform for this global town square, will it be so different? Yes, the current algos make things worse by optimizing for keeping your attention. But they also sift through the noise to yield some signal. And at the end of the day, any algo to bring you the “top” or “trending” content is going to serve you lowest common denominator bullshit. And that’s my word of caution. When you expose your mind to this you are granting the weakest points of your human psychology free reign.

So then what’s the “global town square”? It almost doesn’t even make sense as a concept. I suppose it refers to the global nature of the internet community. But it doesn’t seem to perform the same function. In its current incarnation (twitter, instagram, etc), the global town square is a place to score dopamine hits. It’s a place to indulge our basest desires: scantily clad bodies, videos of violence, excoriating people who hold contrary opinion, cat videos.

Let’s dissect this: What is the “town square” in the first place? It’s a place to interact with your community. To exchange ideas, argue, laugh, shout, make allies, friends, and enemies. It’s a place where we express our social human nature. While not a formal institution, like a congress or parliament, it is an important place to build consensus and steer the ship of society.

Exposing your mind to the global town square (even the one being built on nostr), is to subject yourself to forces of manipulation for which you may not be prepared.

Maybe there’s value to be found, but tread carefully, for you don’t know who (and what) is watching.

I think your brain structure changes enough over time to make that problematic. Not to mention things like stroke or head trauma that can really fuck that up. Cool idea though, not trying to be a hater
