NOVEMBER 4 1985
Queen released the single "One Vision" from the album A Kind Of Magic.
Queen was inspired to write this by their Live Aid appearance in 1985 - millions of people sharing one vision of a better world. When the band was approached to perform at Live Aid, they were in a rut and reticent to appear. But after their show-stopping performance, they re-entered the studio with renewed energy.
They were back in Munich (a place they had previously hit trouble during the Hot Space sessions), but this time spent a lot of time working in the studio, not being distracted by drugs or other distractions - unlike the earlier sessions.
All four band members helped write this. Most Queen songs were written separately, mostly out of a desire to keep writing credits to themselves - Brian May has often hinted in interviews that he was quite possessive of his own songs. But this also made sure their songs didn't all sound alike. The idea of writing a song together came from Freddie Mercury. He rang the other three members and asked them to come to the studio, where the writing and recording sessions were taped.
The band decided that the song would be credited to all four of them, but it was basically composed by Brian May (chords) and Roger Taylor (lyrics). Freddie Mercury was in charge of production and arrangements, and he polished what the others composed.
This was one of the first times that the band distributed a joint songwriting credit; for their entire career songs had been credited to the original band member who wrote them, even if other band members contributed.
For One Vision, the band decided on a joint credit, which would become the norm from next album The Miracle onwards.

"Strategic thinking is not about being clever or smart; it's about being intentional and disciplined in how you allocate your attention and resources."
7 lessons from The Six Disciplines of Strategic Thinking: Leading Your Organization into the Future by Michael D. Watkins and Fred Sanders:
1. Embrace a Systems Perspective
Watkins emphasizes the importance of adopting a systems perspective in strategic thinking. This means understanding how different parts of an organization interact and influence one another, allowing leaders to make more informed decisions that consider the broader context.
2. Develop Mental Agility
A crucial lesson is the need for mental agility. Leaders should cultivate the ability to adapt their thinking and strategies in response to changing circumstances. This flexibility enables them to navigate complex challenges and seize new opportunities effectively.
3. Recognize Patterns
The book highlights the significance of pattern recognition in strategic thinking. By identifying trends and patterns in data and behavior, leaders can anticipate potential threats and opportunities, leading to more proactive decision-making.
4. Engage in Structured Problem-Solving
Watkins advocates for a structured approach to problem-solving. This involves breaking down complex issues into manageable components, analyzing them systematically, and developing actionable solutions, which enhances clarity and effectiveness in decision-making.
5. Cultivate Political Savvy
Understanding the dynamics of power and influence within an organization is essential. Watkins teaches that political savvy allows leaders to navigate organizational politics effectively, build alliances, and garner support for their initiatives.
6. Visioning for the Future
A key discipline is the ability to create and communicate a compelling vision for the future. Leaders should articulate a clear and inspiring vision that aligns with their organization’s goals, motivating their teams to work towards a common purpose.
7. Continuous Learning and Adaptation
Finally, Watkins emphasizes the importance of continuous learning. Leaders should remain open to feedback, seek new knowledge, and adapt their strategies based on lessons learned from both successes and failures, fostering a culture of growth and innovation.
These lessons from The Six Disciplines of Strategic Thinking provide a comprehensive framework for leaders to enhance their strategic thinking capabilities, enabling them to lead their organizations effectively in an ever-changing environment.

“...Conflict engenders fire, the fire of affects and emotions, and like every other fire it has two aspects: that of burning and that of creating light.
On the one hand, emotion is the alchemical fire whose warmth brings everything into existence and whose heat burns all superfluities to ashes.
But on the other hand, emotion is the moment when steel meets flint and a spark is struck forth, for emotion is the chief source of consciousness.
There is no change from darkness to light or from inertia to movement without emotion.”

Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam is a suspenseful and thought-provoking novel that explores human vulnerability, privilege, and the fragility of modern life. Set against an apocalyptic backdrop, the story delves into societal fears and racial tensions through the experiences of two families thrust together under unusual and tense circumstances.
Here are 10 lessons from the book:
1. Uncertainty and Control: The novel examines how people react when faced with unknown threats and the loss of control. As the characters grapple with unsettling events, they reflect the human tendency to seek explanations in chaotic situations.
2. Privilege and Trust: Alam highlights the impact of privilege on human relationships. The novel explores assumptions and distrust based on race, class, and appearances, subtly questioning how people perceive others under stress.
3. Technology’s Fragility: The characters’ reliance on technology becomes a vulnerability when the internet, television, and phone service fail. This loss underscores how dependent modern life is on constant connectivity, which can be taken away unexpectedly.
4. Family Bonds: The novel portrays the relationships between parents and children, showing how they evolve under pressure. The desire to protect one’s family becomes central as the characters are forced to confront their fears.
5. Suspense in the Mundane: Alam uses ordinary details to build suspense, reminding readers that normalcy can quickly turn into crisis. This approach adds to the eerie atmosphere, as readers sense impending danger in everyday actions and conversations.
6. Human Denial in Crisis: Characters in the story often ignore signs of trouble or reassure themselves with familiar routines. Alam suggests that people can cling to normalcy to cope, even when they sense an underlying threat.
7. Isolation and Survival: Set in an isolated vacation home, the novel highlights the fear of being cut off from the world. The secluded setting becomes a microcosm for examining how people respond when left to face unknown dangers alone.
8. Connection and Mistrust: The novel explores both the need for connection and the suspicion that arises when strangers come together. The uneasy alliance between the two families reflects how societal biases affect trust.
9. The Unknown as a Source of Fear: Alam leaves much about the crisis unresolved, focusing more on the psychological impact of the unknown. This approach amplifies the characters’ fears, making the story as much about what isn’t known as what is.
10. Nature’s Power: As the human world collapses, nature seems indifferent to the characters' plight, serving as a reminder of the power and unpredictability of the natural world in contrast to human fragility.
Leave the World Behind is a powerful commentary on human behavior, privilege, and fear. Rumaan Alam crafts a novel that leaves readers unsettled, with open questions about what it means to be human in the face of disaster, and how our identities shape our responses in times of crisis.

"What surprises me most about humankind is that we get bored of our childhood, rush to grow up, and long to be children again. That we lose our health to make money and then lose our money to restore our health. That by thinking anxiously about the future, we forget the present, such that we live in neither the present nor the future. That we live as if we'll never die and die as though we've never lived."

"...New York was an inexhaustible space, a labyrinth of endless steps, and no matter how far he walked, no matter how well he came to know its neighborhoods and streets, it always left him with the feeling of being lost. Lost, not only in the city, but within himself as well. Each time he took a walk, he felt as though he were leaving himself behind, and by giving himself up to the movement of the streets, by reducing himself to a seeing eye, he was able to escape the obligation to think, and this, more than anything else, brought him a measure of peace, a salutary emptiness within. The world was outside of him, around him, before him, and the speed with which it kept changing made it impossible for him to dwell on any one thing for very long. Motion was of the essence, the act of putting one foot in front of the other and allowing himself to follow the drift of his own body. By wandering aimlessly, all places became equal, and it no longer mattered where he was. On his best walks, he was able to feel that he was nowhere. And this, finally, was all he ever asked of things: to be nowhere. New York was the nowhere he had built around himself, and he realized that he had no intention of ever leaving it again..."

"How to Deal with Idiots: (and stop being one yourself)" by Maxime Rovere is a thought-provoking exploration of the phenomenon of idiocy in everyday life. Rovere, a philosopher, addresses the frustrations we encounter with individuals who display irrational behavior, whether it's a relative sharing conspiracy theories, colleagues who misunderstand or misrepresent ideas, or people struggling with basic social norms.
The book delves into the nature of idiocy, examining why it seems pervasive in our interactions and how it affects our lives. Rovere offers insights into the psychological and social dynamics that contribute to such behavior, encouraging readers to reflect on their own responses to perceived idiocy.
Importantly, Rovere doesn't just focus on how to deal with others; he also prompts readers to consider their own actions and attitudes. The title suggests a dual approach: learning to manage interactions with difficult individuals while also striving to avoid falling into the same patterns of thought and behavior.
Through a blend of humor and philosophical inquiry, "How to Deal with Idiots" provides practical advice and strategies for navigating the complexities of human interactions, ultimately aiming to foster greater understanding and patience in a world filled with diverse perspectives.

NOVEMBER 4 1977
Ramones released their third studio album Rocket to Russia.
Its origins date back to the summer of 1977, when "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker" was released as a single. That summer was known as the peak of the punk rock genre since many punk bands were offered recording contracts.
The album's recording began in August 1977, and the band had a considerably larger budget with Sire allowing them between $25,000 and $30,000; much of this money went toward the album's production rather than recording. The album's cover art was directed by John Gillespie.
John Holmstrom and guitarist Johnny Ramone both worked on illustration, with the entire back cover contemplating a military theme, while the inner sleeve artwork depicted many of the themes portrayed in songs. The subject matter of songs varied throughout the album, though nearly all the tracks on the album incorporated humor into the lyrics.
The musical style showed more of a surf rock influence, and many songs had minimal structuring. The album received positive reviews, with many critics appreciating the matured production and sound quality as compared to Rocket to Russia's predecessors.
Music critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine called it his favorite Ramones album as it contained several hooks and featured more variety of tempos. The album was not as commercially successful as the band had hoped, peaking at number 49 on the Billboard 200.
Band members blamed the Sex Pistols for their lack of sales, saying that they changed the punk image for the worse. This is the last album to be recorded with all four original members as credited performers, as drummer Tommy Ramone left the band in 1978 to work solely on production.
The album was ranked at number 106 in Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" in 2012, and was ranked number 385 in the 2020 edition.

The KUBA Corporation manufactured the Komet from 1957 to 1962 in Wolfenbuttel, West Germany.
The Komet was the complete Home Entertainment Center for its time. Opening the door of the lower cabinet reveals the rest of its multi-media features.
The early models usually came with a pull-out, 4-speed Telefunken phonograph on the left, and a television tuner in the center which received both UHF and VHF signals, the Telefunken multi-band radio receiver on the right picked up AM, FM, SW and LW frequencies.
KUBA also released models that featured a storage shelf, commonly used as a small bar or to store vinyl record albums, or for an additional charge, you could order a magneto-phone wire recorder.
Wire recorders were the forerunners to reel-to-reel and cassette audio recorders.

"They'll call you ‘eccentric’ because you dare to step outside the ordinary. You were born with a mind wired to see colors and patterns others might miss, and that unsettles them.
They’ll say you’re ‘too passionate’ because you feel with depth and clarity that few can comprehend. You were born with a heart strong enough to embrace the full range of life, and that intensity leaves some unsure.
They’ll label you ‘self-centered’ because you’ve learned the art of self-worth. You’ve come to understand that caring for yourself isn’t selfish; it’s essential, and that defies their comfort.
For a while, people may throw labels at you and cast their judgments freely. But hold steady in your truth, let your purpose guide you. One day, those same voices may reach out and say, ‘Thank you for being exactly who you are.’

I just found this. Download a copy already. 👍
That is one of his books that I have not read yet. I am going to see if I can find an electronic copy. He had such an impact on not just literature, but also cinema with the movie adaptations of his works like Blade runner, Minority Report etc. Dystopian literature is some of my favourites for sure. Enjoy 🧡
