Kawanabe Kyōsai[1] (河鍋 暁斎, May 18, 1831 – April 26, 1889) was a Japanese painter and caricaturist. In the words of art historian Timothy Clarke, "an individualist and an independent, perhaps the last virtuoso in traditional Japanese painting".[2

1874

Kyosai Kawanabe

Living through the Edo period to the Meiji period, Kyōsai witnessed Japan transform itself from a feudal country into a modern state. Born at Koga, he was the son of a samurai. His first shock was at the age of nine when he picked up a human head separated from a corpse in the Kanda river.

After working for a short time as a boy with ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi, he received his formal artistic training in the Kanō school under Maemura Tōwa (前村洞和, ? – 1841), who gave him the nickname "The Painting Demon", but Kyōsai soon abandoned the formal traditions for the greater freedom of the popular school. During the political foment which produced and followed the revolution of 1867, Kyōsai attained a reputation as a caricaturist. His very long painting on makimono (a horizontal type of Japanese handscroll/scroll) "The battle of the farts" may be seen as a caricature of this foment. He was arrested three times and imprisoned by the authorities of the shogunate.

Soon after the assumption of effective power by the Emperor, a great congress of painters and men of letters was held at which Kyōsai was present. He again expressed his opinion of the new movement in a caricature, which had a great popular success, but also brought him into the hands of the police, this time of the opposite party.

Kyōsai is considered by many to be the greatest successor of Hokusai (of whom, however, he was not a pupil), as well as the first political caricaturist of Japan. His work mirrored his life in its wild and undisciplined nature, and occasionally reflected his love of drink. Although he did not possess Hokusai's dignity, power or reticence, he compensated with a fantastic exuberance, which always lent interest to his technically excellent draughtsmanship.

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov is a controversial novel that explores complex themes, often provoking deep reflection and debate. Here are 10 lessons drawn from the book, considering its nuanced storytelling and dark subject matter:

1. The Power of Language and Artistry

Nabokov’s prose is masterful, showing how language can shape perceptions, even when describing morally questionable acts. The beauty of the writing can sometimes obscure the dark nature of the story, reminding us of the persuasive power of language.

2. Unreliable Narration and Subjectivity

Humbert Humbert, the narrator, manipulates the narrative to justify his actions. This reminds readers to question perspectives, especially when narrated by someone with a vested interest in shaping the truth.

3. The Illusion of Control

Humbert believes he controls Lolita, yet the novel reveals that control can be an illusion. This explores the consequences of trying to dominate another person’s life, as manipulation often leads to loss and destruction.

4. The Complexity of Morality

Lolita challenges readers to grapple with uncomfortable moral ambiguities, showing that people can possess both good and evil qualities. It pushes readers to think deeply about moral judgment and personal responsibility.

5. The Consequences of Obsession

Humbert’s obsession with Lolita consumes him and ultimately ruins both their lives. This shows how fixations can be destructive, especially when they disregard others’ autonomy and well-being.

6. The Dangers of Romanticizing Suffering

Humbert often tries to romanticize his suffering and experiences, but in reality, his actions cause suffering for others. This warns against the tendency to glorify personal pain while ignoring its impact on others.

7. The Innocence of Youth

Lolita’s character is a tragic reminder of the vulnerability and innocence of youth. The story underscores the responsibility adults have to protect young people rather than exploit them.

8. Isolation and Desperation

Both Humbert and Lolita experience isolation—Humbert because of his nature and Lolita because she is isolated from her peers and normal childhood experiences. Isolation can distort reality and increase desperation.

9. The Duality of Freedom and Entrapment

Throughout the novel, both characters grapple with feelings of entrapment—Humbert is entrapped by his desires, and Lolita by Humbert’s control. It emphasizes the difference between genuine freedom and psychological or emotional confinement.

10. The Role of Society in Shaping Individual Behavior

While Humbert’s actions are his responsibility, society’s reactions, judgments, and norms also impact him. This raises questions about how societal expectations can sometimes influence people’s hidden desires or moral decisions.

Lolita is a challenging read with deep, often uncomfortable themes, but it serves as a powerful exploration of morality, control, and the complexities of human nature.

1954 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible 235

The 1953-1954 Chevrolet Bel Air provides an excellent example of a popular practice in the Detroit of the 1950s called reskinning -- making an old car look new without changing its basic structure by applying different outer panels. Nobody did this better at the time than General Motors, and the 1953-1954 Chevrolet Bel Air proved it.

Singer Dinah Shore, Chevrolet spokesperson at the time remarked: “It's a glamorous new star," pausing, while the camera cut to a close up, then gushingly asked: "Isn't that about the prettiest thing you ever saw?"

Looking both modern and classy at the same time, this slick '54 convertible, (the most expensive offering of the line), is proof that Chevrolet's decision to take a curvaceous fuselage, and decorate it with an ample amount of chrome was an excellent idea.

Unlike most exaggerated 50s designs the car's proportions are spot-on, there's appropriate use of trim, and the subtle rear fins that would eventually grow to controversial wings are fully integrated into attractive, sculpted arcs. This car has plenty of convenience options like spotlights, dual mirrors, and even a tissue dispenser.

A GLIMPSE AT A MAJESTIC TIMELESS SCULPTURE

Chevaux du Soleil s'abreuvant – 1667/72 – White Marble

Gilles Guérin – (1611-1678 – Paris)

Musée National des Châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon – Paris 🇫🇷

Imagine yourself immersed in a sumptuous garden, surrounded by sparkling water features and architecture that tells of a grand past. At the center of this idyllic scene stands a monumental sculpture that seems to come to life before your eyes. Every muscle, every fold and detail conveys an intrinsic power that fascinates you and invites you to discover more. Here begins a story that intertwines art, mythology, and mastery.

The sculpture in question is Chevaux du Soleil s'abreuvant (Horses of the Sun Drinking), an extraordinary Baroque work created by Gilles Guérin. Depicting two imposing horses gracefully bending to drink, the piece is enlivened by the presence of tritons accompanying them, symbolizing the servants of the god Apollo. This scene recreates a moment of refreshment and movement that seems captured in a timeless instant.

The sinuous lines and rich details of the sculpted marble are a testament to Guérin's ability to convey energy and vitality. The horses display tense muscles and flowing manes, while the tritons are intent on watering the horses with shells. The balance between strength and delicacy clearly emerges in every curve of the sculpture.

This sculpture is a perfect example of 17th-century French Baroque art, a period known for its emphasis on drama, movement, and elaborate details. The Baroque style was characterized by its ability to emotionally engage the viewer, and Gilles Guérin managed to carry this philosophy into his work. The skillful use of marble gives a sense of tangible realism, as if the horses could begin to move at any moment.

Originally, Chevaux du Soleil s'abreuvant was placed in the Grotto of Thetis (*Grotte de Thétys*), a grotto in the park of the majestic Palace of Versailles. This space was designed to evoke the dwelling of the goddess Thetis and represented one of the many details that reflected the mythological theme and the regal power of the Sun King, Louis XIV. However, for conservation reasons, the sculpture was later transferred to the Grove of Apollo's Baths (Bosquet des Bains d'Apollon), another setting that celebrated myth and nature.

In 2008, the original work was removed and replaced by a copy to ensure the protection and preservation of the ancient sculpture, now exhibited in a museum to allow everyone to admire it up close without risk of deterioration.

Gilles Guérin, a 17th-century sculptor, was born in 1611 and was a prominent figure in the French artistic scene. Known for his talent in marble and stone sculpture, Guérin developed a style that combined the grandeur and theatricality of the Baroque with a sense of classical balance. His work did not simply adorn palaces and gardens but elevated the space in which it was located, transforming it into a living theater. His career, although brief (he died in 1678), left an indelible mark on French art of the time.

Works of art like Chevaux du Soleil s'abreuvant are much more than mere sculptures; they are gateways to a past made of myths, power, and artistic mastery. Through the skill and vision of Gilles Guérin, we can still perceive today the vitality and timeless beauty of this creation. An invitation to immerse oneself in the world of the Baroque, where every detail tells a story and every curve contains an emotion.

The Timeless Guardians: A Legend of Egypt's Jackal-Headed Protectors

In the enchanting realm of ancient Egypt, where the line between myth and reality blurred, two extraordinary statues stood that captured the wonder of all who encountered them. These were not ordinary stone figures; they were the essence of divine safeguarding and ancient knowledge.

Among the vast array of Egyptian deities, none were held in higher esteem for protection than the jackal-headed gods. These majestic sentinels, reminiscent of the formidable Anubis, served as eternal protectors of Egypt's sacred wisdom and spiritual heritage.

Each statue was mounted on a colossal stone pedestal, intricately carved with hieroglyphics – the sacred script of Egypt. These engravings were more than mere embellishments; they represented a heavy legacy of preserving ancient truths throughout the ages. Like silent guardians of the divine, these figures loomed large, their powerful physiques reflecting the strength necessary to uphold such profound knowledge.

Despite their formidable appearance, these timeless sentinels bore the scars of countless years. Cracks and weathering etched into their stone surfaces narrated the passage of time, yet they remained steadfast in their vigilance. These marks of endurance only enhanced their allure, proving that while earthly structures may deteriorate, their divine mission remains eternal.

In the eyes of Egyptian culture, these statues transcended mere artistic expression. They stood as tangible symbols of the connection between the mortal and divine realms. Their jackal heads, echoing the image of Anubis – the guide of souls and custodian of the afterlife – exemplified their role as guardians of both spiritual and earthly wisdom.
