One of the most extraordinary examples of Rajput architecture is Chittorgarh Fort in Rajasthan, India. Built over 1,300 years ago, this sprawling fortress was designed for both strength and survival, with seven imposing gates, towering walls, and an intricate system of reservoirs capable of sustaining its defenders during prolonged sieges.
Its history is steeped in conflict, most notably the siege by Alauddin Khilji in 1303, when the fort’s inhabitants chose jauhar, the mass immolation of women, and saka, the final charge of warriors, rather than submit to defeat. Chittorgarh remains a powerful testament to Rajput resilience and military ingenuity, echoing the bravery and sacrifice of its past.

Magnificent Tetrapylon.
This monumental gate, located just east of the temple and on the north-south street, dates back to the 2nd century AD.
This structure, built in the Corinthian order, is named after the Greek word tetra: four, pylon: door. It is named after four columns on each side. It is difficult to say that it had a specific function. It is not on the axis of the temple's entrance building. However, we can say that the ceremonial processions that reached the temple gathered here and went to the temple.
In general, this structure is a monument built by Aphrodisias architects and sculptors for the sole purpose of showing off. We see that very rich styles were used together in the structure in terms of architecture. Some of the columns with straight, grooved, spiral grooves consist of double columns. Some columns are made of blue marble.
On the western pediment, hunting scenes consisting of Eros, Nike and horses emerging from acanthus leaves are depicted in the broken field style. The eastern pediment consists of a semicircular arch. Venus, the star of Aphrodithe, continues to shine from inside this arch.
The relaxing figures of Nike and Erotes, as well as the semicircular threshold, are visible from the 2nd and 3rd columns of the structure. 16 columns were re-erected and efforts were made to remain as true to the original as possible in the repairs.
Immediately to the east of the Tetrapylon, there is a modest tomb made of white marble from the Aphrodisias marble quarries. Here lies Prof. Dr. Kenan T. Erim, who devoted half of his life to the city of Aphrodisias and made great efforts to reveal and promote Aphrodisias.
Kenan Erim, who made great efforts for the restoration of the Tetrapylon, reached eternity three weeks after the completion of the restoration of the structure and its opening by the late President of the time, Turgut Özal.
The restoration of the Tetrapylon is the most important restoration ever made in Anatolia. 80% of the original pieces used in ancient times were found in excavations and put in their places. It was also built in a way that would give an idea about the whole structure. Austrian architects, Turkish archaeologists and masters took part in the restoration of the structure. The restoration and reconstruction of the Tetrapylon's columns were completed in 1990.
