William Turner's Sunset.
The exhibition history of this astonishing work, probably a depiction of Switzerland’s Lake Lucerne, is paradigmatic of the developing interest in the artist’s late work following his death.
We do not know why it was left in his studio and surmise that the absence of identifiable landmarks indicate that it was not yet complete in 1851. Included in the Turner Bequest, it remained hidden until 1932.
In 1966, the painting appeared, along with Margate(?) from the Sea (exhibited nearby), in "Turner: Imagination and Reality," an exhibition held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
This exhibition cemented Turner’s influence among American abstract artists including Robert Motherwell and Helen Frankenthaler.

Jim Morrison, the enigmatic lead singer of The Doors, and Pamela Courson, his lifelong partner, shared a unique bond that personified the 1960s counterculture. This iconic image, taken in 1968, captures them at Themis, Pamela’s boutique on the Sunset Strip. Temis, named after the Greek goddess of justice and order, was more than just a fashion destination; it was a cultural hub that reflected the bohemian spirit of the time.
The boutique opened during a time when Sunset Strip was a haven for creative expression and hosted a mix of musicians, artists and free-thinkers. Pamela's eye for design and her commitment to curating unique, handmade pieces made Themis a favorite among Hollywood elites and counterculture icons. The store featured eclectic clothing, jewelry and home decor inspired by global influences, aligning perfectly with the free-spirited aesthetic of the era.

Jim Morrison's participation in Themis showed his support for Pamela's creative vision.. Their association symbolized the intersection of music, fashion and art that defined the late 1960s. When The Doors rose to fame with hits like Light My Fire and People Are Strange, Morrison’s poetic lyrics and magnetic stage presence captured the spirit of the time, intertwining their lives even further with the cultural revolution.

The Sunset Strip itself holds historical significance as the epicenter of the 1960s counterculture. Iconic venues like Whiskey a Go Go and The Roxy Theatre provided platforms for legendary acts, fostering a vibrant music and arts scene. This period not only shaped modern rock music, but also influenced fashion and lifestyle trends.
Today, the legacy of Jim Morrison and Pamela Courson lives on as a symbol of freedom and artistic passion, immortalized in moments like this in Themis. Her story continues to inspire those captivated by the transformative power of the 1960s.

“People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances with our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.”

In the Kimberley region of north-western Australia, some rock art dates back an astonishing 41,000 to possibly 50,000 years, making it among the oldest human-made artworks on Earth.
Created by Indigenous Australians, this ancient art is found in rock shelters, on boulders, and flat rock surfaces. Estimates suggest tens of thousands of sites, many still undiscovered.

In Turin, in the church of San Lorenzo there is a dome with a perfect design, enriched by openings that illuminate the vault and the hall in different ways, according to the hours and seasons.

The effect was desired by Camillo Guarino Guarini or vice versa only arises when a camera lens selects that particular shot angle.

5. Personal Reflections and Vulnerability
In addition to addressing larger societal issues, Morrison offers personal reflections on her own life and experiences. Her vulnerability allows readers to see the writer behind the work, offering a glimpse into her thoughts on being a writer, a woman, and an African-American in America. These intimate moments make the book all the more powerful.
6. A Call to Action for Justice and Empathy
Morrison’s work is not just theoretical but also a call to action. She urges readers to confront injustices, practice empathy, and engage in meaningful change. Her words challenge readers to take responsibility for the world around them and to actively seek justice in both their personal and societal relationships.

"Medication time!"
Louise Fletcher was so upset with the fact that the other cast members of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975) could laugh and be happy, while she had to be so cold and heartless, that near the end of production, she removed her dress and stood in only her panties to prove to the cast members she was not "a cold-hearted monster".
Fletcher was so disturbed by her own performance that she couldn't watch the film for years. In later interviews, she said that she found ways to make her character human, yet remain unsympathetic, ultimately deciding that Nurse Ratched actually did care about the patients, and felt she was doing what was best for them, but was ultimately misguided and drunk on her own power.
Director Milos Forman relied heavily on reaction shots to pull more characters into scenes. In some group therapy scenes, there were ten minutes of Jack Nicholson's reactions filmed, even if he had very little dialogue. The shot of Fletcher looking icily at Nicholson after he returns from shock therapy was actually her irritated reaction to a piece of direction from Forman.
Fletcher was signed a week before filming began, after auditioning repeatedly for over six months. Forman had told her each time that she just wasn't approaching the part correctly, but kept calling her back. She only realized that the part of Nurse Ratched was a hotly contested role among all the leading actresses of the day when a reporter visiting the set happened to casually mention it.
Anne Bancroft, Ellen Burstyn, Faye Dunaway, Colleen Dewhurst, Jane Fonda, Audrey Hepburn, Angela Lansbury, Jeanne Moreau, Shirley MacLaine, and Geraldine Page were all considered for the role.

Of course, museums showcase masterpieces from various periods in art history, each offering a unique experience to visitors.
When visiting the Galleria Borghese , you can expect to be immersed in the drama, emotion, and dynamism of Baroque art. Led by the extraordinary genius of my boy Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the gallery displays iconic sculptures such as Apollo and Daphne, David, and The Rape of Proserpina. In total, the collection includes over eight works by Bernini. Other Baroque masters featured include Caravaggio, with six captivating paintings, as well as pieces by Peter Paul Rubens, Guido Reni, Domenichino, and Annibale Carracci.
For Renaissance masterpieces, look no further than the Gallerie degli Uffizi in Florence. Here, you'll encounter works by legendary artists such as Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, and Sandro Botticelli. It’s a treasure trove of Renaissance art that will answer any lover of this era’s call.
If antiquities captivate your imagination, the Musée du Louvre in Paris is the ultimate destination. While the museum is renowned for its diverse Western art collections, its antiquities section is particularly breathtaking. Iconic pieces like the Venus de Milo, Winged Victory of Samothrace, Great Sphinx of Tanis, Seated Scribe, and the Code of Hammurabi will transport you to the dawn of civilization.
For those fascinated by history’s "controversial acquisitions," the British Museum offers a fascinating, albeit debated, collection of artifacts. Often joked about for its reputation in "borrowing" treasures, the museum houses the Rosetta Stone, the Elgin Marbles, and the colossal bust of Ramesses II, among other priceless antiquities. It’s said they almost walked away with the pyramids too—thankfully, they didn’t.
If your interests lean towards natural history, the American Museum of Natural History, New York is your ideal spot. A collection of towering dinosaur skeletons will spice your day.
For a day filled with modern art, the Museum of Modern (MoMA) in New York City is unparalleled. Here, you’ll find masterpieces by Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, and Salvador Dalí, guaranteed to add a spark to your day.
For the best museum design, I’d choose the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. However, the Louvre Pyramid in Paris is another architectural gem.
Whether your passion lies in antiquities, natural history, Renaissance art, Baroque drama, or modern creativity, there’s a museum waiting to fulfill your love of art and history.
For the love of art, for the love of history.

-THE ISLAND LIFE-

There’s no real way around it: Life is hard and filled with sorrow. Marcus Aurelius’ life was defined by loss—starting with his father at age 3, followed by half his children, his wife, and the Antonine Plague. Seneca saw Rome recede into the distance as he went into exile and Musonius Rufus experienced that four times (we tell his story in Lives of the Stoics). Epictetus woke up each day for the first three decades of his life as a slave.

This was not fun. It was not fair.
Stoic philosophy didn’t magically transform these events. It would be glib and preposterous to claim that it could. No, what Stoic philosophy did for them, and what it can do for us is make these events bearable. It can give us perspective. It can give us courage. It can give us toughness and resilience—virtue in the face of adversity.
Can it take the sorrow away? No, no it can’t. Pain and suffering and loss are a part of life. It was a part of life two thousand years ago and it’s a part of life today. It was a part of life for the rich and powerful Stoics like Marcus and Seneca, it was a part of life for the powerless like Epictetus.
We don’t control events but we control how we respond to events. We will experience things that make us sad, but we decide whether we give up, whether this breaks us, whether it makes us better or worse. That’s what Stoicism did for them…and what it can do for us.
