WHEN THE CROW FEELS SICK…

IT LOOKS FOR ANTS.

Just as you read. When a crow feels unwell, it perches near an ant nest, spreads its wings, stays still, and lets the ants attack it.

https://youtu.be/hEF-iKRXyQ4

They do it for a powerful reason: ants spray its body with formic acid, a substance that acts as a natural antiparasitic. This acid helps the crow eliminate fungi, bacteria, and parasites, allowing it to recover without the need for medicine.

This behavior is called “anting” and has been observed in various bird species. It’s an incredible example of animal self-medication.

Nature never ceases to amaze us with its silent wisdom!

"16x sharper than Hubble—the universe is about to get real.”

In the year 2027, atop a bone-dry mountain in Chile’s Atacama Desert, a colossal mechanical eye will blink open—and humanity’s view of the cosmos will shatter forever.

The Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), with its 44 yard mirror (the size of a five-story building), isn’t just an upgrade. It’s a quantum leap: images sixteen times sharper than Hubble’s, capable of spotting an astronaut’s footprint on the Moon or tracking storms on distant gas giants. But what truly steals scientists’ breath?

This behemoth might finally answer ""Are we alone?"" by analyzing the atmospheres of exoplanets for traces of oxygen, methane—or even industrial pollution.

The ELT’s location is no accident. Chile’s high-altitude deserts offer the clearest skies on earth. Light pollution from nearby “renewable energy projects could be its only impediment. But, if all goes as planned, Hubble’s photos would look like cave paintings.

One thing’s certain: when it goes live, our textbooks won’t just need updates—they’ll need funerals."

KNIPPELSBRO BRIDGE TOWER, 1937, Copenhagen, Denmark :

This bridge is a bascule bridge that spans the Inner Harbour of Copenhagen, connecting Bersgade on Slotsholmen (the Zealand side) to Torvegade in the Christianshavn district.

Architect: Kaj Gottlob

The most iconic features of the 1937 bridge are its two copper-clad bridge towers, which were originally built to house the bridge's control rooms as well as sleeping quarters for the operators who managed the bridge openings around the clock.

Over time, as harbour traffic declined, only the city-side tower remained in active use, while the Christianshavn-side (south) tower was left unused for many years.

Despite their functional purpose, the towers stand out as elegant examples of early 20th-century industrial design, combining utility with strong architectural character.

After a long campaign and extensive restoration, the south tower has recently been reopened as a cultural attraction.

Today, visitors can explore the interior and climb to the upper viewing gallery, where they are rewarded with stunning views of the harbour and Copenhagen's cityscape.

At the Pyramid of Menkaure on the Giza Plateau, a few black blocks stand out from the predominantly limestone structure.

These blocks, made of a different, darker material, have sparked curiosity and speculation. Their presence may suggest the use of basalt or another dark stone, potentially for decorative or structural purposes.

The contrast in color highlights the sophisticated building techniques of ancient Egyptians and adds a unique detail to this iconic pyramid.

The Best and Worst Places to Live as Society Collapses.

A lot has been written about the best bug out locations and the best countries to survive a societal collapse. There are even articles covering some of the bug out bunkers being constructed around the world for the rich and famous.

It all makes for interesting reading with some good advice, but it often assumes that someone has significant money and resources to prepare to such an elaborate degree.

New Zealand may be the best country to live in during a global societal collapse, and luxurious bunkers converted from abandoned nuclear silos may be the ultimate bug out location, but for most of us, that’s all out of reach.

That leaves us with our determination, available money, resources, and common sense to make the best decisions about how we would survive any level of societal collapse.

Want to save this post for later? Click Here to Pin It On Pinterest!

The Bug Out/Bug In Dilemma

Many people have decided to make their home their fortress and have done the best they can to stockpile, learn new survival skills, and acquire the tools and equipment to bug in.

Others have a bug out plan with bug out bags packed and either various bug out locations identified or a dedicated bug out location established. But the big question that remains, regardless of your level of preparedness, is how safe is any location?

Road in the Countryside

It’s Not About Safe, It’s About “Safer”

Regardless of how well we research, plan, and anticipate – the safety of any location can change based on variables totally out of our control.

Let’s say we’ve found what we think is the perfect bug out location in a remote area with ample natural resources. It seems like a safe place to survive the madness of a societal collapse. Unless of course everybody else decides to move to that same location.

Old Black and White Photo of Travelers

We’ve seen this time and again over history as refugees fleeing persecution, civil war, or starvation converge in the same safe place all at once. What initially appeared to be a safe haven is now worse than the area they originally fled.

The unfortunate fact is that while we may initially find that “safer” location, it will potentially evolve and change as events unfold. If the location ultimately becomes unsafe, the only option is to bug out again.

It’s possible that bugging out could become a recurring event. The key is to know what to look for that defines a “safer” place and what factors make any place unsafe to begin with. Hopefully we get it right the first time and avoid a constant cycle of bugging out.

The Worst Places to Live

Here’s the telegram: The greater the population density of a location, the more unstable it will become.

Stores will be shuttered, local police and fire departments will be overwhelmed, hospitals and emergency services will be maxed out, and schools will be closed. As a large population begins to compete for resources, crime and violence will own the streets. That’s why urban areas would be some of the worst places to live in a sudden collapse.

If the grid is down or unreliable, the situation in cities will deteriorate quickly, and even bugging out could become impossible as roads turn into parking lots overwhelmed by traffic. But here’s the caveat…

If everyone bugs out of the cities to the countryside, it’s possible that the population density of any remote area will suddenly be challenged with the same demands. It almost makes you wonder if some of these ideal bug out locations that are often identified like Idaho, Wyoming, and Maine will become the new mega cities.

There are already complaints from some long time Idaho residents about the sudden influx of outsiders to the state.

Extreme Factors to Consider

Desert Cactus and Bushes

It’s hard to predict what could specifically cause a societal collapse. Five civilizations across history collapsed as a result of drought. Many because of war or revolution. Future threats could emerge along those lines or worse.

Here are some remote possibilities that may be closer than we want to imagine:

Is the location a potential target in the event of nuclear war? It may seem that cities are the obvious targets, but as was revealed when the Chinese weather balloon traveled across Montana and North Dakota in early 2023, both Montana and North Dakota are the locations of a significant number of nuclear warhead silos (150). That means even a seemingly remote location could be a nuclear target.

Does the location have a history of natural disasters including hurricanes, wildfires, drought, earthquakes, or other weather extremes? If it happened in the past, it will happen again, and climate change will make it worse.

Are there any other extreme events that would make a particular location particularly vulnerable?

The Best Places to Live

We’ll identify some generally safe areas in the United States, but it’s important to understand what makes a location “safer” and what may allow it to maintain those characteristics over time.

Here are some of the criteria that define a “safer” location during a societal collapse.

Abundant, natural water resources. These are defined as freshwater springs, creeks, rivers, ponds and lakes. The water is relatively clean and unpolluted by industrial chemicals or city sewers. The water rights are also open to the general public on public lands and along riverways.

Sufficient arable land for small scale farming, orchards, and animal husbandry.

Stable climate without weather extremes measured by temperatures, rainfall or drought, flooding or wildfires, hurricanes or landslides. Climate change extremes should be considered in areas subject to high heat, drought, or extreme cold.

Realistic property values and tax rates that the average person can afford at the outset and hopefully manage as events unfold.

A stable population size that can sustain itself without becoming overwhelmed by the unmet needs of any part of the population.

Community potential. There’s safety in numbers, and while a high population density puts significant strain on an area, there is something to be said for a small community that lives in a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect.

Sufficiently remote from large cities, jails, interstate highways, and nuclear power plants with a minimum of 60 miles of separation generally defined.

Hunting and fishing potential as a source of additional food.

Abundant trees and forests offering supplies of firewood for heat, cooking, and building.

All of those factors point to some tough decisions if you’re currently living in an area with a high population density. And those high population areas may extend beyond cities to suburbs and even exurbia.

It’s unlikely that most people are going to abruptly pack up and move right away, but if you’re considering the purchase of a bug out location, think about starting it off as a vacation home or even a few acres of land where you may build someday.

Waiting to make any move after a collapse has occurred is not the best idea. Plan ahead. It’s what preparedness is all about.

Areas in the U.S. That Meet the Criteria

Rather than list towns and states, we’re going to identify geographic areas that are loosely defined by parts of certain states.

The Western Appalachian Mountain range of the Carolinas, West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky and Eastern Tennessee (Appalachia)

Forest in The Mountains

The Appalachian Mountains are comparatively short and gentle compared to the Rockies. This makes them easy to hide in and easy to hold, but difficult to traverse in the remotest regions for outsiders.

The mild, temperate climate throughout much of this region is suitable for a variety of farming practices, and plentiful wildlife and water combined with widespread deciduous forest offer a good supply of natural resources.

The Ozarks of Northern Arkansas and Southern Missouri

Trees During Sunset

The Ozarks are a sprawling geographic region taking up a significant chunk of northern Arkansas and southern Missouri. It consists of gently rolling mountains, expansive forests, and natural resources combined with a relatively mild climate all year. Agriculture is a definite possibility, and hunting and fishing is plentiful.

Ark-La-Tex

River With Lots of Rocks

Ark-La-Tex is the name ascribed to the intersection of Arkansas, Texas, and Louisiana given to it by residents of the region. The area is highly bio-diverse with excellent hunting, fishing, and agricultural opportunities. The area itself is free from the climate extremes that each state is known for.

It is neither blisteringly hot nor too humid, and can give you plenty of breathing room to stay well away from the coast and its dense population.

There are other areas that are often identified, but they either seem to ignore the realities of climate change, or they're described as destinations for the hardiest of survivalists. It’s certainly true that moving to Alaska will put you in a remote area with abundant natural resources, but the potential for weather extremes in a state already known for harsh winters could affect whether you consider the location “safe.”

The argument can be made that uncomfortable places won’t attract as many people, but even people who take a lone-wolf approach to survival may find that going it totally alone is not the safest solution either.

Additional areas identified in the past with similar weather extremes include New Hampshire, Wyoming, Idaho, and Maine. They offer a similar mix of natural resources and remote areas but are subject to harsher weather extremes that could become worse as climate change continues to disrupt and alter global weather patterns.

Consider Your Current Location

It’s unrealistic for someone living in an American suburb to consider moving their family to New Zealand or Iceland, but if you apply some of the measures we’ve identified, you may be able to identify some places that are close enough to make the move possible.

What’s important is to start thinking about it now while there's still time. That’s the first step toward preparedness, and it's a step we all need to take.

The Best Ammo Types To Stockpile Before SHTF.

We all remember the Covid-era where there was virtually no ammunition of any caliber available on the shelves. Things have started to get back to normal since then as ammunition has returned to the shelves and prices have also stabilized. But there are warning signs that things may not stay normal for much longer.

We’re starting to see crippling fuel and diesel shortages in Europe and the eastern coast of North America. If this continues and spreads across the states, it will deal a severe blow to the trucking industry and thus devastate the supply chains. We could be in for a substantial period of rationing and shelves in stores going empty again.

If the Covid-era served as a valuable lesson for you (and hopefully it has), it should be that you can never take what’s ‘normal’ for granted.

In other words, stock up now while you still can. When the next ammunition shortage hits (and you can guarantee it’s a question of ‘when’ not ‘if’), a box of ammunition or even a single bullet will become a precious commodity and a valuable asset.

Here are the best kinds of ammunition to stockpile before the SHTF:

.22 LR

The small and yet mighty .22 Long Rifle round is perhaps the most overlooked caliber there is, and yet it was one of the first rounds to disappear off the shelves in the last ammunition shortage. People may commonly overlook the .22 in everyday life, but they always suddenly remember its value as soon as the next shortage hits.

In continuous production since the 1880s and now one of the most popular cartridges worldwide, the strength of the .22 LR lies in its inherent versatility. Since it’s a very small and lightweight round, it can be bought in bulk packs of thousands of rounds and without taking up very much space. You can store hundreds of rounds of .22 LR in a box that can hold fifty 9mm Luger rounds, for example.

The .22 is also an excellent (if not the best) round to use for casual plinking to keep your shooting skills up, for pest control, and for small game hunting. Stock up on it now, and buy it in bulk, because when the next ammo shortage comes around the .22 will likely be the first caliber to disappear.

12 Gauge

The 12 gauge may be a completely different round than the .22 LR, but it’s equally as versatile. The reason why is because of the many different types of ammunition you can get with a 12 gauge.

Specifically, you can use buckshot rounds for home defense, slugs for big game hunting (granted, within closer distances than a hunting rifle), and birdshot for small game hunting or bird hunting.

9mm Luger

If there’s only one handgun round that you stock up on, it should be the 9mm Luger. This is the most plentiful centerfire handgun round worldwide and with good reason. Small and lightweight, the 9mm generates minimal recoil, offers sufficient stopping power (especially with self-defense +P loads) and the guns chambered for it often have a very generous magazine capacity.

The 9mm is also the most common pistol caliber in use by law enforcement and government agencies, as well as military units in the United States. Demand for the 9mm will be very high in the event of an ammo shortage between both civilians and the government, and subsequently in the last ammo shortage it was one of the first cartridges to disappear off the shelves. Buy it now while you can.

.45 ACP

Another semi-automatic pistol cartridge worth stocking up on is the .45 ACP. While it isn’t as commonly utilized as the 9mm, it’s still the caliber used in some of the most popular pistols in the United States today, such as the 1911. The .45 ACP (or .45 Auto as it’s also known) will be in very high demand during the next ammo shortage, so stock up on it now.

.38 Special and .357 Magnum

Revolvers may have been replaced by semi-automatics as sidearms for the military, law enforcement, and civilians alike, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t still in use. Countless Americans today will rely on .38-snubnose revolvers for concealment, or .357 Magnum revolvers as sidearms while hiking or hunting out in the woods.

.357 Magnum revolvers in particular have the added versatility of being able to chamber and shoot both rounds. There will be a market for the .38 Special and .357 Magnum (as well as other revolver rounds) when the next ammo shortage hits.

5.56x45mm NATO/.223 Remington

The 5.56x45mm NATO is one of the most popular centerfire rifle rounds in the United States today for one reason: it’s the caliber utilized for the most popular rifle in the country as well, the AR-15. It’s also the caliber used for many other semi-automatic rifles as well, such as the Ruger Mini-14.

The 5.56x45mm is lightweight and powerful enough to bring down medium-sized game such as deer, pronghorn, or wild boar. It generates minimal recoil and is easily controllable, and

Note: you can fire .223 Remington ammunition in a rifle chambered for 5.56x45mm NATO, but not the other way around.

.30-30 Winchester

The venerable .30-30 Winchester has brought down more deer than perhaps any other caliber in the United States, and a lever action rifle in .30-30 remains the quintessential deer hunting rifle. Many people still rely on the .30-30 for their deer rifles, so don’t discount it as a valuable round to stock up on. When the grid does down, there will be a big demand for it.

7.62x51mm NATO/.308 Winchester

The .308 Winchester holds the distinction as the most popular centerfire rifle round used worldwide. Many semi-automatic, bolt action, lever action, and pump action rifles alike are chambered for this caliber. It’s highly versatile, capable of dropping anything in North America, and also in use with the military as the very similar 7.62x51mm NATO caliber.

A semi-automatic rifle in .308 (such as an AR-10 or M1A) is arguably the most versatile rifle you can own because it can be used for both hunting big game and as a tactical rifle to engage targets at longer distances than you could the 5.56x45mm.

Note: You can fire 7.62x51mm NATO ammunition in a rifle chambered for .308, but not the other way around.

.30-06 Springfield

Another highly popular round in the United States today is the traditional .30-06 Springfield, from which the .308 Winchester was actually derived. This was the caliber originally utilized in American military service rifles before the advent of the .308 and 7.62x51mm NATO, but it’s lived on as a common chambering for bolt action rifles to this very day.

Like the equally venerable .30-30 Winchester, there’s still a considerable market for the .30-06, so stocking up on it while you can won’t hurt.

Conclusion

Right now, you can walk into any sporting goods store and buy nearly any type of ammo you want right off the shelf. Take advantage of this opportunity, because it’s not likely to stay this way for long.

In a true SHTF situation, ammunition in general will become among the most valuable commodities like food and fuel. But the specific calibers that we’ve covered above will be the most sought after.

'Let There Be Rock' by AC/DC

Did you know?

https://youtu.be/s3nEAmt5AZ8

"Let There Be Rock" was co-written by brothers Angus and Malcolm Young, and lyricist Bon Scott. The title track of and the third track on the band's fourth album, it was released as a single in October 1977 backed by "Problem Child." Running to a shade over 6 minutes, it was produced by Harry Vanda and George Young.

In spite of its appearing to be nothing more than a typically mindless rock anthem, this is actually quite a sophisticated track. The opening lines - "In the beginning Back in 1955 The white man had the schmaltz The black man had the blues" - are an allusion to the birth of rock 'n' roll. The genre developed from boogie woogie; the first rock 'n' roll song is generally acknowledged to be "Rocket 88," to which Ike Turner was a very unlikely contributor considering the way his music was to develop, but then the two men who gave rock 'n' roll to the world in the first instance were if anything even more unlikely. There was the white man - who had performed as Yodelling Bill Haley - and the black man, a qualified beautician named Chuck Berry.

Both Haley's "Rock Around The Clock" and Berry's "Maybellene" were released in 1955, and as they say, the rest is history.

An anthem for the band, AC/DC has played this song at every concert since 1978. They often play it very fast and the solo can be extended all the way to 20 minutes as Angus rises above the stage and does the "spasm." Angus Young said of this song: "I remember the amp literally exploded during the recording session. My brother watched it with crazed eyes, and he told me 'Come on! Keep on playing!' while the stuff was steaming."

"Let There Be Rock" is widely considered one of the band's best songs. The Guardian ranked the song number four on its list of the 40 greatest AC/DC songs, and the British rock magazine Kerrang! ranked the song number three on its list of the 20 greatest AC/DC songs. The song has also been covered by several other bands, including the British thrash metal group Onslaught and the Australian punk rock group the Hard-Ons.
