I'm old enough to remember when people had their own websites that they customized. Even if it was just a Geocities page, it was your own page, and people made sure there were multiple ways of connecting.
Now, people just glomp onto one social media site because its cheap and easy. They then find themselves at that media site's mercy because they have no presence elsewhere and no one has any idea on how to contact them outside of that one social media site.
It's not that expensive to get a URL and some small bit of hosting just to list where and how people can contact you. But then that is too difficult for people who have to rely on GoDaddy (*spits*) and their horrible services.
