Part 3

[Image link]Selling wheat or wheat products such as flour in sacks became a part of American culture for decades. One of the elderly women who I interviewed in my study of the Great Depression described her early years where she, her mother, and sisters would make flour sack dresses as the flour sack companies often competed with stylish patterns that these sacks could be turned into dresses once they had served their purpose of transporting the grain or flour to your home or farm. Nothing on a productive farm is wasted and years ago few people in the city would actively waste anything as money was much more difficult to acquire years ago.

Many farms are in debt. We are not. A longer explanation of this is available in my November article part 3. Debt is so important of a topic that this needs to be explained as debt destroys dreams. Debt is the thing that often will drive you off your land, out of your home, and take you away for many hours from your family on a daily basis to work a job in the city where you have little control until someone figures a way to remove the cost of your labor from their profit and loss statement. Even if you are reading this from inside of a city or suburb working a job, this discussion will have great relevance for you. If you are not in debt, congratulations. If you are trying to get out of debt, hopefully the paragraphs I have written on debt will encourage you.

Acreage cost is to the point of being simply uneconomic for someone to wake up and say let’s move to a farm and the farm will pay for itself consistently with your labor and you can have a great standard of living from annual crop sales. The last time that was true in the Midwest was possibly the late 1940s to 1950s and that “Golden Age” soured quickly. Whenever I look at various farm budgets, one thing needs to be considered: it would be difficult to justify buying farmland at these prices for the purpose of possibly getting a return if you are buying it with a mortgage. Generally, land is illiquid, can be volatile in price, and difficult to extract profit from on a consistent basis.

Land is no longer free or available at a reduced cost.  The various land for labor schemes such as the Homestead Act of 1862 or land for a few dollars frameworks such as the Preemption Act of 1841 to settle the country are no longer available.  Good tillable ground costs thousands of dollars an acre to well over ten thousand dollars an acre. I am sure that an Iowa corn farmer is reading this is saying maybe “Single Farmer” has not heard that it can be tens of thousands of dollars an acre. Yes, I saw some of those sale sheets with parcels of tillable ground that have sold recently.

THE ECONOMICS OF FARMING

I often hear statistics that farmers receive 15 percent of a food dollar. That statistic really needs some examination in comparing it to previous generations. Back in 2016, we sold wheat in the $3.80 range and we were fortunate in that the official statistic for wheat for our area is $3.20 a bushel. I will be generous and use our $3.80 a bushel number: At that number, a pound of wheat is a little over 6 cents. Wheat is commonly used in bread, so an example that I often think about is how much of a loaf does the farmer get and that often demonstrates the difficulty in profitability.

For these purposes, I will say one pound or 1/60 of a bushel is the amount of how much wheat is used for the loaf of bread (although many bakeries use less than a pound of wheat flour per loaf, so they could bake more than 60 loaves to a bushel). In 1950, a loaf of bread was 12 cents and the family farmer would sell his wheat for 3.4 cents a pound receiving about 28 percent using that equation. Using the 2023 full year numbers as this is being written in late December 2024 before the complete numbers are available which likely are higher, the average price for a loaf of wheat bread was 2.54 dollars and we a family farm sold our wheat for under 9.5 cents a pound earlier this year receiving under 4 percent using that equation. The price we sold wheat actually declined in 2024, versus what we sold it for in 2023. There are a lot of people paying more than 2 dollars and 54 cents a loaf for bread further reducing a farmer’s percentage.

All of those are gross numbers before any expenses are paid. There are so many expenses which usually include routine and necessary expenses such as seeds, fertilizer, farm machinery, fuel, taxes, and transportation.  That takes the 9 and a half cents a pound and really reduces it significantly. If you have not sold a large agricultural commodity by the semi-truck load, you probably do not know that there are subtractions even when selling it.  After the net weight is calculated (subtracting off the truck), there is also a reduction if the moisture content is above certain established moisture thresholds. If it is higher, then subtractions will be made because they do not want to pay for wet grain which has to be dried out and this costs money. There are also subtractions for foreign material that is not grain as they equally do not want to pay for stones or dirt.

Transporting the crop to be sold is a gigantic undertaking.  For teh sake of efficiency (remember anything that is done on this scale is to be done as quickly as possible or you are not maximizing profit potential), a semi-truck is often used for transport. Some farmers will use grain haulers and this can cost more than a hundred dollars an hour depending on the distances involved. Most people reading this are not seeking to enter into the commercial farming business. There are several points that are very important to understand, since someone who wants to be prepared should consider the necessity of food storage at the family level and the complicated process being described to get food from the field to the first stop along a very long path to your table.

At these low levels for a bushel before subtracting everything required to raise that crop from seeds to cost of transportation to the grain elevator, there could easily be a loss, so not even a penny is made for all of that work. The farmer essentially not only worked for free, but he also has to pay many bills which could drive him further into the red and if this continues could drive him out of business. It was not always this way. There was a better time for farmers, a golden age of farming in the post-Second World War world.

The late 1940s was a time when America was expanding. Many returning veterans of the Second World War returned home, married, and began the “Baby Boom” which was an unprecedented expansion of both our population and the economy. The United States exited the war relatively unscathed with large demands of food from overseas to feed a population desperate for food after six years of world war. Wheat prices reflect the growing demand with 1.91 wheat in 1946 to 2.25 wheat in 1947 and even by 1950 it was still at 2.02 a bushel and through 1956 never went below 2 dollars a bushel in our area. The 1950 price is equivalent to 26.44 dollars a bushel using the latest data of November 2024 from the consumer price index. Using the equivalency in silver, it would be much higher. Those are gigantic numbers and gave the farmer enormous purchasing power. If you look at the historic records for family farms in this era in the Midwest, you will often see family farms producing an equivalent of three salaries compared to city jobs in this era. However, the post-war boom led to overproduction and that in turn led to eventual price declines.

Agriculture does not exist in a vacuum especially in an age of the ability of politicians to tax one group and give resources to another group. Farmers often become a group of people who is pandered to by various politicians promising to restore past glories or for stability in pricing as this allows long-term planning especially based on debt repayment. The concept of “parity” programs which all current subsidy programs trace their ancestral roots are one such example. The period of 1909 to 1914 has been termed the “Golden Age of Agriculture” and at averaging 87 cents a bushel wheat for this period was very good compared to years during the period starting with the Panic of 1893 lasting until 1897 with wheat prices in the first three years of the Panic averaging 43 cents a bushel. Back then unlike the 1950s when gold was unable to be used in commercial transactions inside of the United States, 87 cents for a bushel of wheat was very impressive: if you could sell 23 of these bushels you could put in your pocket a 20 dollar gold piece containing almost an ounce of gold (.9675 ounces of gold to be exact).

Today that equivalency would be $113 a bushel wheat at current gold prices as this is being written in December 2024. Using the more common consumer price index (which many observers say that it undervalues inflation by excluding and often redefining categories), the price of 87 cents a bushel in 1914 to today would be 27.45 dollars a bushel. At that price, farmers would be able to make a consistent return comparable to the level of a 1950 farmer discussed earlier. The wheat necessary to make a loaf of bread would be a little under 46 cents which is not completely absurd considering some restaurants in our largest cities are charging three dollars or more for a couple of slices of toast.

The same can be said about the “profit” that any number of people are making between a farm to your table. The more people who handle any commodity, the more it costs because each person needs to get paid. The grocery store has small margins with massive bills to pay include lots of “shrinkage” and restaurants have their own challenges which also can reduce profitability. Knowing people in both industries has allowed me a view to be able to say that no one is getting rich in feeding the average person.

The logic behind a “parity” programs is that the farmer would receive a payment if his income fell below a certain level tied to a certain time period based on what one party says is a “fair” amount. The issue is simple algebra meaning that if an “operation” is done to one side it also has to be done to the other for things to be equal: for a farmer to receive a payment from the government, someone needs to give it and eventually paying the bill every American or more specifically, the taxpayers. Fairness is not something that can be legislated or regulated.  A free market determines price with supply and demand working out toward an equilibrium continually adjusting depending on the trajectory free people choose for themselves. That is fair, but “fairness” to those who often advocate it means someone has to take from another person by force if necessary to create the playing field they determine is economically just.

Ignoring the free market and trying to institute quotas often results in negative results such as lower quality, lower production, destruction, or production that is not wanted. Examples of this include when the U.S. government during the Great Depression tried to increase the price for certain commodities so it paid for crops or animals to be destroyed in order to temporarily raise the price. This does not work because the producers were paid for the destruction and eventually everyone paid higher prices than the market price.

This little history lesson affects each American until this day because during this period of economic upheaval, the country shifted away from the free market and embarked upon quasi-governmental control of varying degrees of every facet of your life. With the election of Franklin Roosevelt, free market economics was replaced by economic theories which required regulation of free markets and coercive controls to be introduced. As you could imagine, there would be a conflict between men who wanted to carry out their role as men of being providers and government which wanted to control their ability to feed their families through central planning.

The story of Roscoe Filburn, an Ohio small farmer who was just trying to grow wheat to feed his family and cattle during the Great Depression year of 1940 is illustrative of the lengths a central planner must go to smash the initiative of small independent people. Roscoe successfully grew wheat mainly for his own use feeding his family and animals with some extra for his local community. He grew beyond the numbers he was allowed to grow by the government (back then in an effort to increase price, the government gave farmers a certain allotment and Roscoe was not allowed to plant wheat on half of his acres.) The wheat never left the state. It was not sold interstate (between states), but intrastate — in fact, in his very local area.  He was fined and this eventually found its way to the Supreme Court where in Wickard v. Filburn the court ruled that the government could regulate commerce that never left the state because if he did not grow the wheat, then he could have purchased it thus affecting interstate commerce. That was rather shaky logic, but it became the foundation of the modern interpretation of the interstate commerce clause which allows the government to potentially regulate anything it wants in your state even if you never leave it.

Everyone in our nation actually lost some of their liberty with that decision. It led to a growth in the size of government which never acts as efficiently as free people making decisions in their own area. The first large scale programs to control and subsidize agriculture began in this era and they continue to this day.  Some of the quotas have been suspended for years such as wheat quotas that Roscoe was fined for violating.  All of these programs had a goal of “saving the family farm” by trying to raise prices and consequently incomes for family farmers. None of these programs have been successful when looking at overall numbers.

In 1960, John F. Kennedy was campaigning across the country and he gave a critical speech on the future of agriculture at the National Plowing Contest. At the time, there was a debate on how to save the family farm through a parity program to guarantee an income at which candidate and later President Kennedy gave a pledge:

“First, we pledge ourselves to securing full parity of income for the American farmer. By ‘parity of income’ I do not mean a vague target or a high-sounding goal. I mean a clear, easily defined concept which can be mathematically ascertained and computed. Parity of income is that income which gives average producers a return on their invested capital, labor, and management equal to that which similar, or comparable, resources earn in nonfarm employment…Here is a concept which strikes to the heart of the farmer’s problem. It does not concern itself directly or solely with prices – with what the farmer receives – but with his net income, his return, the only figure which is meaningful in determining his standard of living, particularly in this age of the cost-price squeeze. For the farmer, is the only man in our economy who has to buy everything he buys at retail – sell everything he sells at wholesale – and pay the freight both ways.”

None of this was successful and the almost 4 million farms in 1960 became the under 3 million farms by 1970. Many farms during this period of high inflation and lowered prices were forced to take on debt especially after the inflation starting in the mid-1960s.  As you may already know, silver was removed from dimes and quarters in 1965, being reduced and then removed from half dollars starting in 1971. If you purchase farm ground and go back far enough in examining the history of the property through the deed records, you will sometimes see mortgages in this time period of people trying to borrow their way out of rising prices and declining incomes.

By the 1970s, farm policy took an interesting turn when Earl Butz, the Secretary of Agriculture, told farmers to plant from “fencerow to fencerow” (rejecting the previous policy of trying to increase price through decreasing amounts of planted acreage of commodities) and told farmers “to get big or get out.” All of this encouraged monoculture emphasizing a single crop to maximize time and resources which has created soil depletion and also subjected farmers to dependence on the fortunes of a single crop. Family farms in the 1970s had to contend with high prices of the inputs required to produce a crop and getting bigger was very difficult as land values continued to climb in the 1970s along with every other tangible item being squeezed higher in inflationary pressure. The number of farms declined by almost another 500,000 during the 1970s. However, the worst crisis was actually just on the horizon.

The decade of the 1970s was a period of high inflation where people were willing to pay more for tangible items as these were seen as a hedge against further inflation. People rushed into buying land, houses, cars, and almost anything of value as waiting often meant that the price would be higher. I have interviewed people from this period who were trying to purchase homes and they commented that if they delayed prices were increasing much faster than they could save, so many would try to use credit in order to borrow to stay ahead.

All of this inflation was largely a result of the decision of the United States government to move the dollar away from being pegged to gold which increased the price of gold from 35 dollars an ounce to 850 dollars an ounce by 1980. Interest rates skyrocketed reaching over 18 percent by 1981. Farmers were not immune to this decade of price increases and many decided to follow the advice of Earl Butz both moving toward monoculture of commodities instead of diversification as was more common on earlier family farms and also to purchase more land to increase the efficient use of the equipment which was rising in price.

All economic bubbles eventually pop and this one resulted in an economic destruction in the farming sector which could be argued was worse than the Great Depression as measured by bankruptcy filings. The crisis actually peaked in 1985 and the price for 1986 wheat in our area was actually even lower in 1986 than 1985 bottoming out to 2.25 a bushel, a level first seen in 1947.

Farm bill after farm bill has tried to save the idea of the family farm. Our nation has been living under farm bills since the 1930s with each multi-year act (bills that are signed into law are called acts) trying to “help” farmers starting with the “Agricultural Adjustment Act” of 1933. I am writing this in the time of an expired “farm bill” where there is an interesting debate going on about how to “help” farmers. Farms growing specific commodities that are broadly consumed in the country such as wheat, soybeans, and corn are usually eligible for various financial assistance depending on the provisions in the act.

The Department of Agriculture (USDA) is the best source of information and they routinely send communication periodically to farmers both electronically and through the mail informing farm families about these various programs. Deciding on the merits of each program in the current farm “bill” and how they apply to your operation is outside of the scope of this article.

The Biblical foundation of individual economic wealth creation is to exchange your time and skills in the form of labor for money and this becomes your capital. You can then take that capital that you earned and further invest it by saving it for a “rainy day,” further invest in yourself building up your business or skills to give yourself further competitive advantages in the marketplace or investing in the business of another individual with the expectation of further profit. All of this is hard work often requiring a lot of “sweat equity.” The opposite of this is to make a loan and get the capital today instead of taking the time and learning slowly using compounded knowledge instead of interest gradually growing your business. Like all easy roads, the road of borrowing has a unique toll of compounding interest that must be paid or you could end up losing more including any collateral.

Loans and other direct subsidies are keeping afloat many farmers today. Going from one debt payment to the next loan is unfortunately the case for many farmers in our country. “Beginning farmers” are offered loans and farmers are offered operating loans. There is no shortage of people offering loans, but it is often very difficult to pay these back as I have mentioned many times. Without the farmer, there is no food. Governments have many times tried to figure out ways to encourage agriculture making it a cabinet-level office in 1862, but instead agriculture has grown from self-supporting to extremely dependent on government for funding especially since the 1930s.

During the major famine prior to the Bubonic plague that was discussed in Part 1, prices increased by more than 300 percent in an area that was heavily affected in France. Back in the Middle Ages, it ranged from very difficult to impossible to afford food at the peak of a famine except for the wealthiest, so people would starve. Tripling of food prices now to Americans in 2025 would be difficult, but it would be closer to historical norms in the early 1900s where Americans spent over 40 percent of their income on food. This was a different time where many Americans had gardens, hunted, and fished for food and almost all of this food was consumed at home (restaurants were not as plentiful). In 2019, Americans were spending a little over 10 percent of their income on food and this has increased with the recent inflation over the last few years to over 12 percent.

We are not benefiting much and usually not at all from higher prices as the increased prices you pay usually means farmers are paying higher prices for the seeds, machinery, fuel, fertilizer, and everything it takes to produce a crop. Back in 2022, we sold wheat for over 8 dollars a bushel, but instead of us singing “Happy Days are Here Again” (a song people sang during the Great Depression to lift their spirits), the price was more of a mirage than some new level because everything also went up in price. Futures actually spiked to over 13 dollars a bushel for wheat at one point.

Nitrogen fertilizer based on local prices in 2022 was almost $1,000 dollars a ton compared to in the $300 a ton range back in 2016. Remember the wheat price in 2016 was 3.80 a bushel (using the fertilizer comparison we would need to sell a bushel at over 11 dollars for the same equivalency). Whenever you see higher food prices, farmers are unlikely to be making more “real” money and often are losing money on a “real” basis as the higher prices often do not adjust for the higher input costs. Prices usually go up either because of a shortage due to a crop failure that the crops do not produce at normal levels or sometimes there is an international incident such as what prompted the higher wheat price as there was uncertainty in how much wheat would be produced in another area of the world which is also considered a breadbasket like farms in the Heartland. Prices can rise and fall very fast in an international crisis. I noticed in 2023 the price of wheat dropped from 7 dollars to 5 dollars a bushel in 3 months as more inventory became available.

The good news is that food is more available at a lower price with fewer people having any involvement in agriculture than for the majority of history. Currently, Americans are able to purchase wheat at 10 percent of the price of someone in the Middle Ages and chicken at just 4 percent of the price meaning that chicken is 25 times more available to you. You may be asking yourself:  Why is Single Farmer talking about chicken? Chickens both broilers for meat production and layers for egg production consume wheat or other cereal crops as a large percentage of their diet, so large increases in grain prices show up in chicken, egg, and milk prices along with any other animal that consumes grain for its caloric needs.

The number of hours required to complete an agricultural task has been in decline for over 100 years. This is one of the key concepts that you need to understand in order to have the best chance of surviving the future as these efficiency increases also are across many industries.

Time is not spread out evenly on a farm which is a problem from a labor perspective. There are many times in the life cycle of a grain farm where there is nothing to do, but wait especially with dryland (non-irrigated) farming meaning that you allow natural precipitation cycles instead of introducing irrigation through pivots.  There are some times during the initial stages of planting and the last stages when harvesting that there is too much to do in a given day given the needs of human operators.

I am simplifying this process as there is preparation of the ground necessary to plant, usually a couple of applications of fertilizer in the late Fall and early Spring for a “top dress” application or having to treat the crops for specific conditions. (Including some who will use a crop duster if conditions necessitate that step.) Most of the time it is allowing natural processes to unfold and that usually occurs on an observable timetable. That is both the problem and the solution and this concept impacts every reader in this country.

Modern farming is an extremely capital-intensive business. Perhaps you were or know someone who was an apprentice and progressed to being a journeyman in their field. This stage often requires ownership of tools as a journeyman has developed skills and ownership of materials necessary to carry out his craft. I have heard complaints about people wondering why someone would need to spend over ten thousand dollars on tools to work at a job. Tools cost money, many often “disappear” having a value that allows them to be turned into ready cash by men whose morals need realignment, and all of this shrinkage can cost an employer their bottom line, so men who own their own tools are typically paid more.

A workman who owns his own tools without any debt often has demonstrated a long series of steps toward responsibility. This is much the same as a man in Virginia in 1620 who was industrious enough to be able to afford through his own strength land and resources was seen as worthy of the next step of marriage. Now, a modern farmer will often have a tool and equipment budget in the millions of dollars. Obviously, you don’t wake up as a young man and say “that farming business sounds like a good thing, so I am going to get into it.” You are born into it or you buy into it often successful at something else as you seek diversification. Gone are the days when a strong back and some initiative would allow you entrance. That era has long been closed.

Many farmers actually are a combination of owner of some land and a tenant/contractor also working their neighbor’s land either for a set cash amount or a percentage of the crop. Because of the high prices of cropland, they often own only a percentage of land that they actually work. The high cost of machinery and the overall efficiency of machinery are the two reasons why so few people (as a percentage of the population) need to be in farming.

The greatest problem is the capital-intensive nature and I will briefly highlight a couple of areas. Earlier you read about the humble funnel and the tractor. There is a lot of single-use machinery on a farm.  Consider the process of getting the seed into the ground. From ancient times until the industrial age, people would broadcast wheat and this often made a nice meal for birds and a fairly low yields at harvest which because of the uneven nature of the application. This changed with the introduction of tractors and the implements of introducing seed into the ground such as seed drills and planters.

Speaking in general of row crops: Planters plant the seed at a precise depth having an acceptable number of plants per square foot neither with too many or too few as either scenario will not result in optimal conditions for plant growth and harvest using a combine. This obviously is labor intensive for an individual without machinery. Now, a large modern planter can precisely plant upwards of 100 acres an hour! Planters have not followed Moore’s Law of semi-conductors, but great strides have been made and you can see the overall decline in labor needed on a farm through the ability of being able to plant six rows in the 1950s to 48 rows, today. If a person attempted to achieve this same level by hand, it would likely be a fraction of an acre a day for planting with enough exercise and calories burned that they would not need to go the gym.

There is a cost associated with this massive efficiency. A modern planter with that level of capability costs over $500,000 plus the cost of a tractor which can easily be another $500,000 to a million dollars, so a modern farmer can be spending over a million dollars to be able to complete one task. Some of the tasks will use that tractor again during the agricultural year, but there are so many other single-use pieces of machinery. All machinery requires regular “feeding” of fuel and maintenance. Most passenger vehicles have under a 20 gallon tank and that can be expensive: Filling up a large tractor or combine can easily cost hundreds of dollars to over a thousand dollars.

Consider how plowing was done in the early 19th century where one man and one horse could plow an acre per day and some people added additional horsepower, so maybe your could increase it to 10 acres a day with more horses. Of course, the additional horses cost money in feed and time required for care when they are not doing agricultural tasks. Unlike tractors, there is a potential for natural reproduction of horses. (Unlike mules which were also often used on pre-industrial farms.) The cost of mechanical tractors is enormous, but the efficiency is amazing: Plowing has also undergone a remarkable increase in efficiency at current record levels of hundreds of acres in daily work capacity of mechanical horsepower versus animal-based agriculture in the 1800s.

I often think about the future of agriculture. All of us live in a very interesting time. Fewer people have ever been involved in the growing of food as a percentage of the population, but many of the farmers are really struggling. The debt that I spoke of so many times is still often a large factor in farming. We have no debt, but debt is serious as it effects many of our friends and people in our country who are in farming. We are customers of many agriculture-related businesses, so often we find ourselves being recipients of various “magazines” these businesses send to us through the mail. I put all of our agricultural-related information into a box throughout the year for tax purposes and some of these magazines end up being put into another box (with the intention if it is an article that I should read or refer back to someday). I decided to pull some of these magazines for a few years to get a general idea as to what was being discussed. Some of the articles are talking about increases in efficiency, some new product out there, or someone’s thoughts on the commodity market, but many times it is discussing the financial aspects such as “growing liquidity,” “reducing costs,” or “increasing revenue.”

I am writing this during the latest “Farm Bill” discussion in late December, but a summation of the reason for the billions of dollars of extra subsidies is useful to show how we ended up here having to subsidize food production. Many commodity production farms have entered into their second plus year of financial downturn, so they need to get loans to help be able to cover family and farm costs into the new year and until they receive their first checks for the 2025 crop which could be mid year for many commodity farmers. The current “solution” is for the government to give farmers money so they can show the banks that their financial condition “improved,” and they can then pass the necessary lending hurdle to get approved for a bank loan to continue farming.

Many of these magazine articles talk about loan to value, debt to asset ratios, or the impact of interest rates. The ideal state is to have no loans.  However, many farms have large loans on them: the small farms average over 200,000 dollars worth of debt with the largest farmers averaging almost ten times that worth of debt. Net farm incomes this year are expected to decline. If a bank would evaluate most farms as a business, they would laugh most of the people applying out of the building, but a farm is unique in that people need to eat. A lot of people will say that we can just import food from elsewhere like we do a lot of manufactured goods that were previously made in our country until the late 20th Century. We export about 20 percent of our food to the world. Under one percent of our GDP is output of food from farms, but the vast majority of calories you eat are grown somewhere inside of the United States either directly eating it or being processed through livestock feed.

The problem is that farming has for years been a non-self-starting endeavor. Probably the last time was during the Homestead years, but even then you needed to start with some type of “grubstake” to begin. And it is at the point of being non-self supporting. (The cost of land and everything it takes is many years beyond what you receive from a crop if you have an interest expense from debt on top of your other costs). A healthy percentage of farm “profit” is often government subsidies (in some recent years across all farms it was 40 percent of the income was from government subsidy checks). There are some farms that do not take any government payments out of principle, not wanting to have the government involved in their business.  Many farms rely on them as a percentage of their “profit” to justify the massive costs involved and sometimes the subsidies are the difference between a “profit” and a large loss.

There are no easy solutions: all require work and pain. Some people say to eliminate all of the subsidies immediately, but then a lot of farmers would leave farming and we would have less food. Most farmers are independent family farmers like us meaning that we can decide what food crops to grow on our land. These decisions are made on a family level. If a crop is no longer self-supporting, it is no longer grown. Because of crop prices, we have decided to stop growing several crops that we have historically grown because we no longer believe it is worth the risk, so we reduced our financial exposure.

We do not owe anyone any money, so we do not have a bank to report to who could influence our decision-making process. In this scenario which has little likelihood because of the catastrophic downstream effects that would occur if these subsidies were withdrawn, the farmers who remain who were not taking the subsidies would experience more profit, but your grocery bill will probably be much higher. Right now, every American is paying about 150 dollars per person per year if all of the subsidies were divided out equally at even at a high amount of 50 billion a year in which many years it is lower.

Most people would think that the “Farm Bill” is about farming, but the majority of funding for the “Farm Bill” is normally about 80 percent of funding for the “food stamp” program now called Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). My family and I have never begrudged helping out needy people and are always trying to help people. However, helping often becomes hurting when government is involved as individuals are not counseled by people knowledgeable about their situation applying healthy doses of “tough love” when necessary, but are categorically eligible. The one problem with all subsidies whether it is to farmers or to needy people is there is never a way in these programs to encourage people or industries to become self-supporting. The current “food stamp” program started out at costing 75 million dollars in 1965 and in 2023 it costed almost 113 billion growing from about a half a million people in 1965 to over 40 million people today. The problem is that they have resulted in more people on them (not fewer), we as a nation have to borrow for these programs, and our nation is over 36 trillion dollars in debt.

President Reagan joked that “nothing lasts longer than a temporary government program.” There is so much truth in that because each program usually starts out as a “pilot” program and then expands eventually to becoming a sacred cow which could never be reduced, only expanded. Feral hogs annually cause billions of dollars of damage to crops across many states. In 2014, funding started for a “National Feral Swine Damage Management Program” and the 2018 “Farm Bill” contained a provision for a “pilot” program on feral hogs. Some new farm bill advocates want to make this program permanent.  Over the years, first settlers and then farmers hunted wild animals because their continued presence would reduce crop yields and create problems with farm animals. Advocates of the feral hog funding want to increase the amount to study and “control” it by doubling the appropriation of the 2018 levels.

“Rule 308” still works well to solve issues with feral animals and it is often cheaper than spending hundreds of millions of dollars “studying” problems. We do not have any large dangerous wild animals in our area in large part due to the topography in our area and as these have been hunted and trapped by previous generations. Trapping can be more effective especially in eliminating large numbers, but less glamorous to people who enjoy “the hunt.” Often you will see government create a problem and “pay” for the solution while still allowing the problem. Consider the case of the re-introduction of the wolf to western areas of the United States.

If you tried to explain this to someone from the 1800s, you would not be able to explain the story of the modern wolf to pioneers who would reduce predator populations whenever they had an opportunity as they knew the damage a pack of wolves can do. Now, wolves are “federally” protected in many states (this is a brief comment not covering the whole story of the “re-introduction” of the wolf) with their “meals” being subsidized through the taxpayers in many instances through federal indemnity payments when they are “federally protected predators.”

Farmers do all kinds of interesting things with their grain in an effort trying to get more for it. Some farmers try to guess what the future price will be by getting involved in the “futures” market. No one knows the future.  We do not get ourselves involved with the futures market. Some try to hold grain expecting the price to increase (which may or may not happen for years). You can store grain in bins and then truck it to the elevator if the price is higher or you need to pay a bill. Some people store it at the elevator and this also costs money.  My dad believes in selling the grain. Many times the price is higher initially and then as more supply comes in it lowers unless there is some type of international event which could cause an increase (supply and demand at play here and everywhere).

Our farm philosophy has been to regard the money that we received from our farm as “seed capital” for other ventures, not constantly trying to see if we can extract every last possible cent out of this investment often risking more money. There is a lot of wisdom in the old saying of “don’t pick up pennies in the path of a steamroller.” Over the years, we have diversified into other businesses outside of agriculture and are not as subject to price shocks as many other farmers.

Never before has been less labor needed to farm, but the costs to enter into commodity farming are extremely high. I see the total amount of labor decreasing further with the growth of fully autonomous farm equipment. The days of a farmer borrowing money going from crop to crop could be numbered if this equipment is able to achieve true autonomy in the upcoming decades. Most labor in the form of muscle applying itself to a task has been largely replaced by mechanization. A “combine operator” in upcoming years for the majority of tasks may become as obsolete as a lamplighter. Each innovation results in job loss where people move to something new. From scholars with quill pens diligently copying the Bible before the introduction of the printing press started making the Bible more accessible in the 1450s to linotype operators replaced by phototypesetting, and eventually to computerized editing, there is always an effort toward efficiency for most commercial production. As individuals living in the country and preppers, we are aware about the complexity of modern life and know how to do things in both ancient and modern ways.

The most successful people that I know in agriculture are always “future-oriented” with a deep appreciation of the past. Over the years, successful people who live debt-free have seen the prices of commodities rise and fall and are not much disturbed by them as they are less subject to price fluctuation. The years of larger checks in farming allowed them the ability to develop a surplus which they were able to invest. Many individuals expand outside of farming in order to diversify while other successful people sometimes enter into farming at optimal times in order to diversify. Productive land has maintained a value to the individuals living on it even during periods of both deflation such as during the Great Depression and during periods of high inflation — seen quite recently and in the 1970s.

To survive and thrive in the 21st Century in farming one must be nimble, avoid debt, have a variety of income sources from businesses that are unrelated to agriculture, have friends, and most importantly to have faith in God that He put you here for a purpose. We enjoy living on our farm and consider each day that we have here to be a blessing. I do hope that someone reading this will know a single young woman who is also looking for a husband and can tell her or her family about me. It is my sincere hope that you have enjoyed this little journey into understanding more about grain farming in the 21st century.

Thoughts on Farming, by Single Farmer

SURVIVALBLOG CONTRIBUTOR

JANUARY 7, 2025

I want to tell you about an amazing group of people. They make sure that you not only stay alive, are well-nourished, and that you have your choice of a delicious variety of food that Kings and Queens of yesteryear could not dream of, all at relatively low prices. Contrary to what you’ve been told, prices are still fairly low by historical standards and food quality is high. I know that you or someone you know has recently been to the grocery store and you think the prices are high, but wait until you hear about the state of the farm economy and I will give you some practical thoughts that may help your family in the future. In this article series, I am going to take you on a journey through history until the present where you probably interacted with the products from a family farm, probably three or more times per day.

The full depth of an article covering family farms could cover many volumes. So I will not be able to take you down every interesting road showing you every interesting detour, but I do hope to provide you a comprehensive overview of how a seed planted in the previous year harvested midway the following year could become a component in your breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, or dinner — keeping you alive and healthy. I will introduce you to a farm family that survived the Great Depression including one of their stories of thrift, through using something most people today would discard.  There are so many lessons to be learned in these struggles during previous tough times.

Because time only moves forward, I encourage you whenever possible to learn from your elders, talk to them, ask them about their life, also importantly ask them about their ancestors and any stories that they heard going back to their childhood. You can go back very far and sometimes you can learn a lesson that can help you in the future.

The last generation of people who were “born in this century, tempered by war” are quickly passing off the stage of history and the time is short to learn from their lives before they can no longer speak to you with their voice and you can ask them follow-up questions. Most of the few who are still living were children during the years of the Great Depression, with the men serving in World War II, and they came home victorious to a post-war America where decisions were made on farming at a national level that still impact farms today — and by extension you and your family, as well. You may ask what President Kennedy’s inaugural speech in 1961 has to do with farming, but the family farm was undergoing a rapid transformation during the critical decades of the 1960s and 1970s. Because you are likely a consumer of food that someone else grows or prepares, this story is critical as it most likely has much to do with how you are living and what you are eating today.

In my previous five-part article series on retreat properties, there is a lot of information about land and history for survival retreat purposes. Many retreats are actually working farms because an inescapable fact is that you need to eat: you can store food, but eventually you will eat your way through it. The nutritional value of stored food will also decline over time. And, given the right conditions, you can grow more food. It is better to be in a food-producing area — preferably with plentiful water — than in a food-importing region. To understand farming as it exists presently in the United States, it is critical to understand of how we got here.

There are now people trying to figure out how this generation overall of people is less healthy than previous generations. I applaud their efforts. If you want to know how you got here, you have to know where you have been and the decisions that were made along the way have largely determined how and what you are eating. What you are eating is a large and often the primary determinant of your overall health.  I like ice cream in the summer as much as any healthy red-blooded American man, but if my diet consisted solely of that I doubt that I would be as physically fit and healthy as I am today. It is best not to look at one thing in isolation as an overview of how people managed to get the food that they needed throughout history is very important to understand the present.

I am a third-generation prepper, survivalist, or whatever name that we go by these days. More importantly, I am a student of history. I want to learn from the past to see how I can prosper and more importantly to prevent tragedy from occurring. Our ancestors had a saying the “burnt hand dreads the fire,” but we do not have enough hands and time for them to heal enough to teach us in the proverbial “school of hard knocks.”

Throughout most of history, you did not purchase food at a store, you grew it or someone you knew grew it for you as you were doing something else that was important to them (such as being the mother of your children), so they were willing to share their labor with you because there was some sort of trade where you are performing something of value to them. For instance, the most able hunter often was able to attract the best looking mate and who was then able to pass his genes on to future generations. The food that he provided, allowed her and their offspring to be able to eventually pass their genes to the next generation. This is a foundational Biblically derived principle of how gender roles were first expressed with the wife as helpmeet to the man. Because people live beyond their ability to biologically produce children, the grandmother actually has a critical role as expressed through the “grandmother hypothesis” where her role actually is involved in providing care and food to increase the second generation’s fitness to be able to reproduce.

During most of human history just getting sufficient calories was the number one priority, so a grandmother gathering food initially or discovering the secrets of agriculture helped increase the overall family’s survival. Humans can fly a hundred thousand feet into the air at multiples of the speed of sound for long distances and land safely, but we have not overcome the basic facts of physics of calories burned have to be replaced: we need to eat regularly or we suffer consequences starting with hunger pangs leading to muscle loss if enough protein is not consumed with enough of these unfortunate malnutrition events strung together often lead to an untimely death.

Food is not free and someone had to work to grow it consistently. I know there is a farm boy out there who either is still in his “Huck Finn” carefree stage with a cane pole or who is now all grown up who thinks back to a fond memory of fishing by the lake on his family farm and takes a snack of some wild blackberries. Maybe some food is free, but that is not enough. I am going to take you back to an unpleasant time, so you can see how good you have it, historically.

Go back just a few generations, there were no “food stamp” coupons or cards allowing you the benefit of the cornucopia of modern life potentially at your fingertips just for the virtue of living in the post-industrial welfare United States of America. This is so historically abnormal, but tragic because it often can lead people down so many bad roads.

Eating without working for able-bodied adults is contradiction of Biblical wisdom in 2 Thessalonians 3:10 in which we are warned: “For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.” The early colonists at Jamestown actually experimented with a form of “socialism” where everything was held in a common storehouse as that is how their company charter was originally organized. Because the colonists at Jamestown under this system could not individually benefit from their own labors, they often did very little and this contributed to the near collapse.

One of the leading colonists, Ralph Hamor, wrote in his 1615 book “A True Discourse of the Present State of Virginia” reflecting back on his time at Jamestown: “When our people were fed out of the common store and labored jointly in the manuring of the ground and planting corn, glad was that man that could slip from his labor, nay the most honest of them in a general business, would take so much faithful and true pains in a week as now he will do in a day.” Food shortages and leadership challenges led to disastrous results with an 80 percent death rate during the Winter of 1609-1610. The colonists made it through the “Starving Time” although in diminished numbers. From that point forward, their numbers never dipped that low again and they became successful.

The treasurer of the Virginia Company of London Sir Edwin Sandys highlighted an important fact in 1620: “The plantation can never flourish till families be planted and the respect of wives and children fix the people on the soil.” The first permanent English settlement in this country at Jamestown only flourished after it had discovered a few inescapable facts both through a lot of trial and error. People need to have a reasonable expectation that they will individually profit from their labor as Captain John Smith was instrumental in changing how the colonists worked and were compensated. Civilizations and their smaller outposts of colonies only succeed when they are able to grow and flourish through feeding themselves and eventual population growth.

As I mentioned in a recent article, importing brides proved to be crucial to the success of the Jamestown Colony.

Successful survivalists consider a variety of scenarios including looking at how previous generations survived to glean any wisdom that they can take as compensation for their time. All of us are only here because our ancestors somehow managed to carry themselves genetically forward. For most of human history, it was difficult to get enough calories to barely stay alive and this fact is lost upon most people as they have so many choices today often struggling on what cuisine to eat, and not how to find food.

A common cause of death throughout history has been starvation, due to crop failure. A lot of individuals reading this if asked to name a critical event of the 14th Century would say the “Black Death” — also known as the Bubonic Plague — reducing Europe’s overall population from 1346 to 1353 by about a third with mortality rates of often 80 percent or higher depending on the plague year. Few people know that just a little earlier in the 14th Century there was a large food crisis that is very important to our discussion on farming. Throughout history, people would often go from harvest to harvest and the slightest interruption often meant disaster as crop yields were not large multiples, but were often in low single-digit multipliers in productivity. Often it was two to one or even lower with even higher loss percentages.

The closest modern equivalent to a person born at the dawn of the 14th Century is a man born in 1900. A baby born in 1900 was old enough to be eligible to participate in the carnage of trench warfare by his 18th birthday, by his 19th birthday he could have been dead of the influenza pandemic starting in 1918 which killed over 50 million people. He was still under 30 at the beginning of the Great Depression, and was under 40 when the Second World War started, and then in his 45th year he entered an age of the atom with all of its consequences to civilian populations, worldwide.

His 14th Century ancestor by his mid-teens, faced a famine that rivaled the Black Death in its capacity to reduce the population. However, this famine is now relatively forgotten as so many have occurred since then: Like most naturally occurring famines, it started with bad weather in the spring (of 1315) with heavy persistent rains and without warm periods. This did not allow the grain to ripen and this cycle continued off and on for about seven years. Any grain that could be harvested had a low yield and animals starved in some areas with an 80 percent reduction in their numbers. Population declined between 10 to 20 percent in many areas and even royal families who were the richest with many experiencing overall reduced life expectancy. During this seven year period in which disease and deficiency debilitated even those who survived, pandemic followed in the form of the Black Death a little over a generation later.

All well-read survivalists know that civilization has a very thin veneer. This famine was not much different as what traditionally occurs in famines as food became less and less available and people become increasingly desperate: crime increased even to unspeakable crimes such as cannibalism and infanticide. The origin of the “fairy tale” of “Hansel and Gretel” actually is from this time period and for those who have read the original telling of it includes the famine component. The historical record is unfortunately replete with examples until this day of the principle of the “nine meals” by Alfred Henry Lewis: “Those of us who are well fed, well garmented and well ordered, ought not to forget that necessity makes frequently the root of crime. It is well for us to recollect that even in our own law-abiding, not to say virtuous cases, the only barrier between us and anarchy is the last nine meals we’ve had. It may be taken as axiomatic that a starving man is never a good citizen.”

When we hear statements like 80 percent of the world’s calories come from grain or other staple crops, this is a very critical point for survivalists to remember. Wheat, corn, and rice comprise over half of the world’s calories. Think about it like a three leg stool with even one leg being knocked out it becomes an unstable platform.  Previous civilizations that relied on one crop often suffered tremendous consequences if some form of pestilence became prevalent. From 1845 to 1852, the Irish potato crop which was the Irish “Lumper” potato was the most common variety became subject to the blight.

The net result was that a million Irish died and a million emigrated abroad to avoid starvation and for better opportunities. This is an extreme example of monoculture gone wrong. Specialization is one of the key components of the reason why you are able to do what you do instead of being behind a plow from sunup to sundown or engaged in other food growing or gathering like the majority of adult men for most of history, but any type of complex system can fail. The Irish chose a variety known for its ability to produce high calories in a compact space quickly. Unfortunately, a lack of crop diversification led to much wailing and lamentations throughout Eire.

For most of human history, it was a struggle just to survive and a prepared individual should be prepared for historical pendulum to eventually swing back to a historically normal level where food takes a larger proportion of income and is not available in endless varieties. Our farm can be activated very quickly into a retreat and one of the foundational principles even on a farm is food storage. Our farm can harvest multiple times per year, but there are many months when we are waiting for the harvest. We are blessed to have extensive food storage both packed for long term and on shelves, large freezers full of food (with multiple backup power sources), and the ability to purchase food both locally and from around the world. This is wonderful, but it could stop suddenly.

Based on my historical research, the bare minimum for any retreat is two and a half years of food storage and that is for people who have extensive experience with extracting calories out of the ground. History has shown too many times that when problems happen in food production they can often be regional or national instead of just local. Unless a family truly has limited climate-controlled storage space for food or is in the process of moving, food is often an excellent investment as a hedge against inflation, supply chain issues, and other problems that occur.

Our current civilization is founded on several key components. One of them is the principle of food storage. Most people do not store food, but others are storing food for you so you can exchange your dollars for their food that you want when you want. Previous civilizations stored food or they starved. Even if they stored food, many times they starved. You can get food by looking around for it, by knowing which plants will get you some limited nutrition or are your last meal. This is highly inefficient and often dangerous to those who are not experts in identifying the often minute differences between something highly poisonous and something benign.

The most efficient way to produce food is through modern farming techniques some of which will be covered with my discussion starting tomorrow. Most of this discussion is very similar to what other farmers who own grain farms do throughout the United States and the world.

Modern farming is scientific. At its simplest form, this is the idea that you can take a series of steps and repeat them to show an easily repeatable result. Randomly scattering seed at the wrong time of year without planting will often result in a meal for birds, not food for you or to sell so you can buy something else.

Scientific farming has been developed over the centuries. It is no longer folklore or old wives’ tales which sometimes are the basis of how things really work and sometimes just plain nonsense. This has taken much time and experimentation. Go back far enough, and people thought some really strange things that we know now to be incorrect to dangerous. A more recent example is if you tried to explain the chain of events starting in 2020 to most people in 2019, they would have thought that was impossible.

Sometimes discoveries are made by accident and probably not through the rigorous principles of science. Cheese was probably invented when some merchant was transporting milk across a long distance who discovered that it is quite delicious and a way to preserve milk. It took some time to discover that the stomachs of animals contain the enzyme rennet which causes milk to curdle to separate the curds from whey. Eventually someone figured out to make ricotta cheese which uses the whey. We can now accurately gauge every single phase in the life of a plant including which inputs work best and how to most efficiently harvest it to maximize yield and how to store it to preserve it for the point at which you want to consume it for its caloric output or sell it to someone who wants to eat it or further process it.

One of the foundational principles of farming is based on a very simple idea: you plant a seed and try to increase the amount you get back.  A seed is an amazing item. In the case of the humble wheat seed (known as a berry or kernel), it can be eaten now or one seed can given enough time, effort, water, fertilizer and sunlight fill an entire room with more seeds with the potential for each of those to do the same. It does not happen overnight or by accident. It requires a lot of planning and everything to go right.  There are so many possibilities that can destroy a harvest. An early frost, excessive rain at the wrong time, a drought, fire from a lightning strike, and hail are just some of the events that can turn a “fine stand of wheat” into a topic for a newspaper story on the state of American agriculture.

One ordinary seed has all of the power to restart a crop and all of agriculture. You just need a lot of time, knowledge, and the basic inputs of farming for that one seed to become the progenitor. It is a play on the old game of showing exponential growth of rice thought of a long time ago starting with one square and doubling it each day. Over a hundred years ago someone considered it for wheat and figured it would take 15 years at the rate back then for one wheat berry to turn into over 5 billion bushels. In the United States, we routinely harvest a multiple of what previous generations of farmers would harvest, so it would take less time today to get to the same level of production.  The one problem is how to make it over the “starving time” between planting and harvest, so for survivalists deep larders, knowledge, and tools will be necessary if we ever need to restart agriculture.

Consistently repeating that simple idea is often the problem. Seeing that you could turn that one seed into two on a consistent basis was most likely the genesis of agriculture where people could stay in one spot and develop what we often term “civilization” instead of just figuring out a way to stay alive by going from harvesting wild edibles to chasing herds of nomadic animals. Now, we routinely return 30 or more to one seed through amazing agricultural productivity through the principles of scientific farming. An acre of wheat planted in our area in Kansas could yield 50 or more bushels to the acre. We plant about one bushel to the acre, so that could be a 50 to 1 return at that level of productivity. This level of productivity is simply historically amazing and the reason why you are not behind the plow currently (actually not many people are “behind a plow” currently except by lifestyle choice or who are “historically interpreting” animal-powered agriculture).

CORPORATE FARMS VERSUS FAMILY FARMS

As I wrote last time in my series on retreats, family farms are the vast majority of all farms in this country which are owned by families, not large corporations. Depending on the source of the statistics that you read, it is somewhere around 95 to 98 percent of family farms in the United States, currently. Large corporations control between 2 to 5 percent of the farms, but since these are very large, the percentage of their total output is high. However, your food most likely comes from a family farm as over 80 percent of food grown in this country is actually from family farms. At the dawn of civilization, one farmer barely supported his family; now farmers are feeding almost 170 people. This has increased consistently and fewer people are needed each year to be involved in agriculture. Because of the efficiency of modern agriculture, you are most likely able to devote your time to other pursuits which improve our lives.

WHEAT FARMING IN THE HEARTLAND: A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF A WHEAT FARM

We are a diversified family farm actually growing multiple crops to provide diversified income streams. We own all of our acres and have no debt. This will be covered extensively in the part which covers the “Economics of Farming.” Everything is grown that is sold is for profit. If a crop is no longer profitable or has a strong possibility of becoming unprofitable, it is not grown or sometimes grown in a limited amount. Just because we can grow something in quantity, does not mean that we should.

In pre-industrial America, a wheat farmer had to do these tasks by hand: cutting, bundling the sheaves, drying, threshing, winnowing, and storing. When wheat is at the stage which can be expressed as “amber waves of grain,” it describes the color transformation stage from green to amber in the ripening process on the road to harvest. This first stage of the harvest required great physical stamina in swinging a scythe where two acres a day would be a routine amount using a scythe with a cradle. This was an improvement over using a sickle where usually well under an acre could be cut, but this was a forward movement in efficiency.

The imagery of “bringing in the sheaves” as expressed through the 19th Century song evokes the idea of the Great Harvest instead of wheat it is of believers who are gathered together with whom they have shared the Gospel.  Threshing is actually the most labor-intensive because you are separating the wheat berries from the stalk often using a flail although other methods are often used. Other Biblical imagery included the concept of winnowing of separating the wheat from the chaff, so only the edible part of the grain is stored. In 1831, Cyrus McCormick demonstrated the first reaper which ushered in the transition and shifting the burden from man to machine with some animal assistance. Cutting was a gigantic step forward and the next binding the bundles took about until 1874 with John Appleby whose invention mechanized this step which is much more complicated.

Within a half a century of the introduction of the mechanical reaper, steam was replacing animal power on large farms. Now, a modern combine can harvest multiples of that per day with one operator versus a whole team of people.  A combine can do all of these steps (the storage step is actually limited as you need to transfer it into another transfer truck to eventually a bin or truck it when the combine’s grain tank is full) at a rate of 30 acres per hour (this could easily be upwards of 100,000 pounds of wheat an hour) with the specs on one of the popular models.  The record is over 200,000 pounds per hour for an eight hour test on another model.  Of course, tests performed under ideal conditions or even averages can be far from actual results in the field. Comparing the speed of one horse to a modern sports car is nowhere near the ability of a combine compared to a single man harvesting.

[Image link]Combines became computerized by the 1990s able to document yields and locations with the ability to analyze field data and now they have extensive self-driving capabilities using GPS. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) defines five levels of automation for driving (six if you count a level 0 which has no automation). Imagine in the future of a fully autonomous tractor where the farmer can instruct the tractor on what to do using his phone and he can do something else. The current level of autonomy being tested in one model of an “autonomous” tractor is at a level that it has to be dropped off in the field by the operator. This is great progress because if fully implemented it could remove many hours of labor and someday it may be able to do the next scenario.

Maybe at some point in the future, a farmer could give some instructions to a tractor which can leave a garage or barn, perform some type of useful task, and return itself to its parking place delivering a report as to what it accomplished perhaps with a highlight reel of any interesting events plus allowing instructions to be changed whenever by electronic instruction. The next step after that is that the tractor takes information and “decides” that the window is actually correct to do a particular farming task (examining historic weather patterns including monitoring soil temperature for ideal germination rates, considering road traffic and conditions necessary to get to a field reported by other vehicles or sensors) and completes it delivering a report after it is done.

As in most tasks, there will be some human involvement as there is in automated restaurant concepts where someone puts the ingredients into various bins that are needed for the assembly process. For a restaurant that could currently need ten people to produce a product, one or fewer could be needed in the future as this person could be divided between restaurants until even that is further reduced perhaps with robots able to perform increasingly more agile tasks with the same levels of human dexterity as has been demonstrated with robot locomotion in the past decade. In any case, fewer people will be needed for most jobs, not more.

All of this automation costs massive amounts of money. Few businessmen would look at the numbers a modern farm produces and say to themselves that sounds like a great place to park their money for a gigantic return. The amount of product a farm can produce is astronomical, but the small amount of money a farmer receives for all of this risk is just absurd. I am going to take you into some numbers so you can peak under the hood of how farming economics works on a modern grain farm, but first let’s look at the lifecycle on a wheat farm.

If you are like most people, you eat some sort of wheat often multiple times per day. At almost every meal, you are probably eating something made with wheat. You might start your day with a wheat based cereal or if you decide to have an egg and toast. After that breakfast, maybe you had a burger (bun) or fried chicken (breading) for lunch.  Many dinners such as spaghetti and meatballs or macaroni and cheese contain wheat.   Usually, bread is made of wheat even “white bread.”

I have traveled a lot and I have heard people think that “white flour” is somehow different than wheat. We do not have any “white flour” plants: White flour is an end product of milling and refining wheat flour. White flour is simply wheat flour with the bran, middlings, wheat germ, and wheat germ oil removed with five vitamins added back in currently for “nutrition.”

Starting in the late 1800s, roller mills in distant cities would produce flour separating components that could lead to spoilage as wheat flour once ground quickly oxidizes. This process was very different than the community-based stone ground mills which in communities near falling water were water-powered instead of animal-powered.  An individual was likely to go from milling to usage that day or very quickly versus something produced in a distant factory could have been milled months ago.

By the 1930s, scientists began to see the effects of a lack of vitamins in factory-produced white flour as through the processing the bran, middlings, wheat germ, and wheat germ oil are removed and four vitamins were added back then with folic acid also being added by the 1990s. Many individuals have been rediscovering the benefits of whole grains and are now milling or grinding their own whole grains.

Wheat takes a lot out of the soil depleting it of nutrients such as nitrogen and micronutrients such as copper. Soil depletion is real and this must by addressed by farmers as it is important to monitor individual soil chemistry and deficits. A very important consideration is topsoil loss which unfortunately has been in continual deficit globally although many farmers have begun the long process to mitigate the effects through no-till farming and adding organic matter back into the soil in an effort to restore topsoil.

Continually monitoring and addressing the soil health is important because mineral imbalances often lead to lower yields or increased susceptibility to disease similar to a person who is lacking critical vitamins such as long-distance sailors suffering with scurvy in the Voyages of Discovery before Vitamin C was recognized as a critical component of a well-balanced diet.

The increase in yields is largely the result of scientific understanding of what plants need to grow and how to maximize the life cycle of annual crops to achieve increased yields. Starting with the Haber process which “unlocked” nitrogen into a form that can be readily used by plants, farm yields began a gradual march upward.

Nitrogen is 78 percent of the air you breathe, but being able to effectively use this in farming required factories to produce ammonia which 80 percent of ammonia is used for fertilizer. The story of soil fertility including the concept of how lime is critical as a soil amendment allowing better mineral uptake in plants demonstrates how one imbalance can lead to reduction in both yields and quality of crops. Earlier processes in farming to use various amendments such as animal manure were not as effective in increasing yields, so they have been supplanted over time by most farmers producing at commercial levels.

There has been a great deal of research on the concept of micro-nutrients and other components of soil health besides raw easily definable numbers. It is important for farmers to keep up with the latest developments to increase soil health as the soil is the “home” to the crops providing it with stability and the nutrients it requires. The increases in yields have been fantastic over this period and has dramatically reduced the possibility of starvation for many more people beginning in the mid-20th Century. If you look at wheat yields in our area, we have easily doubled and sometimes tripled our averages over the past 80 years. This has allowed food prices to decrease as a percentage of income and for people to have more choices.

Timing is very critical in getting a crop in because in our area ideally you want to get the wheat planted and in before first snowfall. I describe our winter as moderate compared to many regions, but a nice snowfall helps provide the wheat a nice “blanket” for the winter weather. Like everything, too much and too late often leads to later problems. There are actually 23 segments across 11 stages in the process of going from the seedling growth to tillering to stem extension to heading to flowering to ripening in cereal crops such as wheat.

The timing of the planting of winter wheat is often controlled by the harvest of usually beans. Timing matters in life and especially in farming. Winter wheat is usually planted in our area around the third week of October and the average harvest is usually in mid to late June although there have been early harvests. That is when you will see your first check usually. The average person reading this probably has a regular paycheck or if they own a business are probably paid when the job is completed or within 30 days usually. Imagine performing work for someone in October and them not paying you until June of the following year.

There is a saying that all of us stand on the shoulders of giants and nothing can be more true than in farming. We have the benefit of over a hundred years of scientific reporting and descriptions to understand prior harvests. Wheat has actually been grown in Kansas since 1839. Kansas is known as the “Wheat State” due to the amount of wheat that has been historically grown. We are fortunate that the mild climate in our area often allows us to be able to harvest a double crop of beans after wheat. It is useful to consider a few specific decades of farming, so we can understand different cycles.

If you talk to a farmer who has been around for many decades, you will often hear them talk about particular years and often you can see patterns repeat themselves as climate-like history often rhymes if not repeats in cyclical patterns. In the historical record, you can often find brief reports of major events in the crop year including overall yields and total production.

In parts 2 and 3 of my previous article, there was a discussion about the farm family in the 19th Century who unfortunately lost a parcel that we later bought in the 21st Century. Studying price is often a way to understand economic conditions at the time. The 1880s were a difficult time to be in agriculture and prices declined from $1.05 a bushel for wheat in 1881 to just 45 cents by 1884. Wheat did not even break the dollar barrier again in Kansas until 1916! A student of history would recognize 1916 as the third year of the First World War where wheat production in Europe was limited by the war and United States production was needed.  By 1917, the price was $2.12 a bushel and stayed above two dollars until 1920, not reaching the two-dollars-a-bushel price again until 1947.

When prices are high, people tend to rush into investments further increasing price. Then, these booms lead to eventual busts as conditions improve and other sources are brought back into production or new sources are found which causes supply to increase and prices to decline. Crop production in Europe rebounded. During the boom years, farmers took on debt and now had to repay their creditors with crops which brought considerably less when sold. Many farmers who took on debt were unable to pay it back and these farms were lost.

One important discussion in crop history is often to look at both the weather that impacts the crop and also specific diseases or infestations that occur. I will cover one such infestation which has historically wrecked wheat crops. The Hessian fly was actually one of the reasons for the panic of 1837 where crop shortages, speculation, and easy credit caused a cascading series of bank failures and unemployment. If you think the name sounds familiar, the story is that the fly was supposedly carried in the bedding of Hessian soldiers during the American Revolutionary War period.  The Hessian Fly devastated many wheat crops through the 1930s and the principles of scientific farming have helped to reduce the devastating effects of this persistent pest. The varieties of wheat are now better able to resist most disease and these improved varieties of wheat are yielding more than ever before with increased resistance to disease.  Using integrated pest management strategies, the Hessian Fly is well controlled in many areas through observation of the life cycle, using crop rotation, and better varieties of wheat.

The 1920s and 1930s were a very difficult time in farming because of the high debt load many farmers acquired during the boom war years. Wheat prices averaged about $1.16 a bushel during the 1920s, but many farmers expanded purchasing land at higher prices when wheat was over 2 dollars a bushel. By the end of the decade, the Great Depression began and by 1930 the price for a bushel had declined to 63 cents. The years of 1931 and 1932 were especially tragic with wheat being 33 cents a bushel both years. In those years, it often cost more for producing a crop than you would have achieved in selling it.

The Great Depression affected almost everyone with unemployment surging to about 25 percent of men were unemployed during the height of economic turmoil. Especially difficult was the year 1932 in which the summer of ’32 is now known as the economic bottom of the Great Depression, but few people realized it was the bottom at the time. This was a national event of monumental scope: In Mississippi in April of 1932, 25 percent of the land in the state was sold at foreclosure auctions across the state!

Preceding this was the collapse in the price of cotton: During the boom war years cotton was worth over 30 cents a pound, but in the depths of the Depression it was worth about a nickel a pound. Commodity after commodity could be easily be profiled along with all of the stories about how farm families were forced off their land due to inability to pay back debt, families who were in cities who were unable to pay their rent or mortgages were forced out onto the street.

Booms in agriculture are often event-based many times relatively short term and busts often last for years with often tragic consequences. Events such as the First World War or the recent war in the breadbasket of Europe often send prices higher and in the example of the First World War, these prices stayed higher for a longer time. Sometimes short-term weather events impacting the amount of crop is harvested will lead to higher prices. A poor wheat crop in certain areas when yours was unaffected is a situation that has happened to us when our area had sufficient rain at the right times, but other areas were in drought leading to higher prices.

THE FUTURE OF FARMING

The smallest of agricultural tools demonstrates the largest of problems in farming today. Small funnels are often thought of as almost disposable, but this one and its sticker saying the price survived all of these decades to become a component in this discussion. The funnel is from 1977 when my dad was young long before I was born. It was 59 cents. A comparable funnel today is around 5 dollars. Let us call it almost a ten to one ratio because you have in many states to add sales tax. Corn prices back in 1977 were about $2.30 a bushel. Corn prices 40 years later were $3.61. (I recently had a quote for corn at $4.30 a bushel.

The highest that corn sold for is a little under $8.50 a bushel back in 2012 due to some serious weather issues and decreased production forecasts.) Farmers were selling corn a little over 50 percent more 40 years later while purchasing equipment that could have been 1,000 percent more. Even with increased yields with improved varieties, this is simply not sustainable. Every piece of agricultural equipment that I can think of is higher in that time span. Back in 1977, a 125 hp tractor was about $20,000. Something comparable today can be over $100,000. Even larger tractors can easily cost a million dollars today. There is a lot of truth in the joke of how to make a million dollars farming: start with two million.  There is still money to be made for the most efficient farms, but it requires people to have an understanding about business, weather, and history as much as it is about equipment.

What does the future look like in farming? Unfortunately for those who wish to be “operators” of equipment, it is like most jobs with large-scale declines in the amount of labor required to produce the same amount of calories or product. For those owners often knowing how to do a process, but hiring operators on a seasonal, ad hoc basis, or using more fully automated machinery at some point, the future looks brighter as costs decrease. This is part of the natural historical process of the amount of labor required to perform tasks in decline. Even this keyboard I am typing on is so much easier than using a mechanical non-electric typewriter.  There are no “help wanted” ads for linotype operators anymore.

The amount of labor required to produce almost anything has been in decline almost continually since the First Industrial Revolution. Farming was actually a later industry to be mechanized than others. The steps to industrializing farming first required some form of portable power to achieve a mechanical advantage first through steam and then through relatively portable gasoline and diesel engines. Unlike most activities, the land is immovable, so you need to bring equipment to the land to work it trying to coax more out of the ground than you put in.

Ancient people would grind grain using an animal and those near water sources were able to figure out that falling water could be used to grind grains. An example of an industrial application of this principle is the factory mills of Lowell, Massachusetts in the mid-1850s where over 50 water-powered turbines were powering the drive shaft in factories producing over 350,000 yards of cloth per day being produced in industrially powered looms. By comparison, someone skilled in the loom can produce between one to three yards per day. The mills had over ten thousand people employed, but still this was over a 10-to-1 advantage even with the relatively primitive technology of the mid 19th Century.

At some historical interpretation sites, you often will find someone using a spindle and loom demonstrating the last step in ancient practice of transforming flax into linen which is a 12 step process including such terms as you probably are first reading about such as stooking, rippling, retting, scutching, and hackling all before it is spun from the distaff on a spinning wheel. Much of this was done at home in piecework prior to the First Industrial Revolution. Using the factory model earlier developed in England, centralized factories allowed the ability to achieve higher output of fabric at a lower price driving out suppliers of goods. The factory organizing model led to the first large changes in how families were organized financially and socially with the workers journeying and often moving to the work. The work was not performed in their homes as it had been before, selling or trading at a local general store for other goods.

Centralization was necessary as the factory’s machinery was not portable. Usually, this was near a falling body of water to produce power inexpensively as gasoline or diesel power generation was several generations in the future. You may be wondering what our little journey to meet the “mill girls” of Lowell in the mid-19th Century has to do with farming.  Their journey to the factory and centralization of their work was an early symptom of the decline of the family farm.

Many farm families in Massachusetts who were earning cash in piecework at home sent their daughters to work the looms for three or four dollars a week minus boarding expenses. Prior to this expansion into the Americas with the factory system, there is another interesting group of people who saw their jobs going away: the Luddites who starting in 1811 realized that machines were replacing people and they would go around smashing textile machines in order to stop this transformation. They were not successful. Eventually the cloth factories of the North moved to the South and most of this production has moved overseas due to labor costs over the last 30 years.

Factories cost money to build and to run. This requires capital which in its purest form is a free person deciding to take the results of his labor or money he has raised from other free people who decide that they can produce something at a lower cost than they can sell it at. You will often hear about “capital costs” or capitalization of a factory. A farm uses many of these same principles. We put our capital out and expect a return on this capital. This is not an overnight process: a winter wheat crop goes into the next year, but it is always more than six months and usually over seven before we see any financial benefit.

Labor has been declining in overall strength for the last 150 years. A large machine is often the equivalent of more than one man working continually. In many ways, that is the understatement of this century as it often is the power of thousands of men or something man could never accomplish on his own without the machine such as powered flight. In terms of raw number crunching power and ability to generate reports from facts, a machine can generate the report in seconds with the right prompts versus a human could not even begin gathering the data.

One thing that my family has done is given me an appreciation for people who labor and we would often visit factories when going on vacation. Where pictures and movies demonstrated how it was done years ago with countless individuals on various production lines, many people have been replaced by machinery which rarely takes a break to the point of needing some required maintenance or an overhaul. Many jobs will be on the chopping block as men with capital figure out how to reduce their costs with labor often being a significant and escalating cost.

Whenever I consider anything about history to glean some knowledge to use today, it is useful not only to look at battles and diplomacy, but about the people and the men (it was mostly men) working farms. The women made their houses into homes by following what the Bible says about the family in that they were helpmeets to their husbands and their contribution was to build a community in which these patchworks when sewn together became a great nation. The hours and dangerous conditions they faced were enormous, but these farm families were feeding a growing nation.

In the 21st Century, we tend to romanticize the past with our love of the frontier of a pioneer feeding his family, of cowboys driving cattle to the market and men gathered around the campfire telling tall tales. For the most part, men have always dreamed of figuring out how to make things more efficiently and farming is no different. The goal of grain farming is to extract more “seeds” out of the ground than you put in. When successful, it is significantly more than your overhead.

The first men transformed the motions of men using animal-powered reapers and the various tasks were combined into an integrated “combine.” All of those steps which required so many men working around fast moving often sharp metal objects now are accomplished by one man in a combine that often has GPS control over steering. A hundred years ago most farming was done with horses or mules. Successful “combining” was a well-coordinated activity incorporating the labor of multiple men working together to accomplish the task.

The combining task when examined through a modern lens is a safety nightmare. Traditionally, one man sat on an elevated perch reached by a ladder high above attempting to command often more than two dozen horses with no safety equipment such as seat belts or roll bar trying to efficiently drive this literal horsepower to accomplish a task that is now done by one man. (See the photo at the top of this article.) When sitting in an air-conditioned combine seeing computer readouts with steering with GPS capability, it is amazing to see the growth in efficiently. Currently, there are no fully autonomous combines sold in the United States, but that possibility exists in the near future.

Wheat in the field is basically worthless to a grain farmer unless he can figure a way to get it to the point where he can extract the precious wheat berries for his own use or to sell them. The entire point of the modern combine is to make that a seamless process taking the ancient processes and turning it into a usable easily transportable product. Before wheat became easily transportable in semi-trucks that hold approximately 1000 bushels of wheat that can be sold at the grain elevator for checks, it usually was put into sacks and then these sacks were transported to be sold locally or transported by rail.

The Swedish ship Vasa.

The Vasa was built in the 1620s to take advantage of the very newest in warship technology, a second row of guns. It was to be a symbol of Sweden's might, and thus was decorated with beautiful statues and carvings. This ship took three years to build and cost roughly 5% of Sweden's GDP.

Unfortunately, the effect of a second row of cannons on seaworthiness was poorly understood. With great fanfare, the ship set off, experienced its first breeze, and still within full view of the city of Stockholm, capsized and sank.

The New SurvivalBlog 2005-2024 Archive USB Sticks

I have some great news: The new batch of 32-gigabyte waterproof SurvivalBlog archive USB sticks is now available for pre-sale.

I’ve had some folks write to ask about what is included in the new 2005-2024 SurvivalBlog Archive USB stick. There certainly is a lot!

These sticks of course have everything that has ever been posted in SurvivalBlog, dating back to its launch in August, 2005, and up to December 31, 2024. In my humble opinion, these feature articles, product reviews, columns, and quotations just by themselves are worth the price of the archive stick.

But then there is also a veritable mountain of carefully curated bonus material from the public domain.  Many of these are rare pre-1929 books from my personal library that I had professionally scanned, at considerable expense. It is loaded on a 32 GB stick, which also allows some extra room for you to load scans of all of your important documents, and your treasured photos on this waterproof, vibration/shock-resistant, and highly EMP-resistant stick. Just as with previous editions, it is mounted in a threaded alloy case with an o-ring seal. So it is great for your bugout bag, or for caching at a secure site. We recommend passing along your older-edition sticks to family members. This new edition is engraved “SurvivalBlog.com 2005-2024.”

Note: We again opted for more expensive USB 3.0 sticks so they will be faster to load, if your laptop, desktop, or smartphone is USB 3.0-compatible. But these sticks are of course also backward-compatible with USB 2.0.  Note that with some operating systems, it may take up to one minute for the stick to initially load.

THEY WILL SELL OUT QUICKLY!

Many readers order  2, 3, or 4 sticks, so I expect them to sell out rapidly. Last year’s edition of the archive stick sold out within five weeks, so be sure to order yours, soon!

USB stick mailings should begin by around February 5th, but with the expected rush of orders, please allow up to four weeks for delivery.

As usual, all U.S. orders are shipped in the sequence of their order numbers. So the sooner that you order, the sooner that yours will arrive. This is truly a  “First come, first served” situation.

To order, see the 2005-2024 SurvivalBlog Archive USB stick ordering page.

Again: This year the stick capacity is 32 gigabytes and it uses the faster USB 3.0. We had to raise the price from $30.95 to 32.95 due to increased product and postage costs. The postage fee is flat rate, so you’ll pay just $7 postage for your order whether you buy 1 stick or a dozen of them. Deliveries should begin in the first week of February.

Note: Orders must be made through our automated ordering system.

Stick mailings to customers should begin on or before February 5th. Allow up to four weeks for delivery. Thanks for your patience.

These sticks sell out quickly each year, so order your sticks soon! – JWR

“…what I can say is that there is an alignment with all those who are willing to fight against socialism at the international level.

All those who want to fight against socialism at the international level are my allies. Because the enemy is socialism, the enemy is statism, the enemy is collectivism. And all those who are willing to fight that fight, we are all together.

Later we will discuss the emerging order, whether it will be more or less liberal, whether it will resemble classical liberalism or minarchism or anarcho-capitalism, but that is a second order discussion.” – Javier Milei

THE FREE BEACON’S DAILY NEWS BRIEF

Monday, January 13

When the Great Chicago Fire burned some 2,100 acres in 1871, residents famously pointed the finger at Mrs. O'Leary's cow for kicking over a lantern. The L.A. wildfires are unlikely to produce a four-legged culprit, writes the Hoover Institution's Bill Whalen. But there's plenty of blame to go around, and Whalen, a Golden State resident and former speechwriter for California governor Pete Wilson, has a breakdown:

The Golden State itself: California is home to 38 million people. It's also prone to fires, floods, droughts, earthquakes, and infestation, and no part is safe.

Mayor Karen Bass: L.A.'s modernistic metropolis boasts an outdated water system and an underfunded fire department, and Bass, whether she's in Ghana or SoCal, can't explain why.

Gov. Gavin Newsom: His administration failed to remove the brush and deadwood that's literally fuel to the fire. He spent his first term promising to "fundamentally" change fire prevention in the Golden State.

Californians: They declined to recall Newsom, then put him back in office, then elected Bass over developer Rick Caruso (whose Palisades Village mall is still standing).

Newsom has already called for an independent investigation into why fire hydrants ran dry. Whalen says not to expect much in terms of results. "In Gavin Newsom's California, process typically supplants progress," he writes.

Tasked with figuring a way to rejuvenate California’s COVID-stricken economy, Newsom didn’t strong-arm his way to a legislative stimulus package. Instead, he created a 98-member Task Force on Business and Jobs Recovery that was long on recognizable California names but short on innovation—so underwhelming of an endeavor that Newsom eventually euthanized it, but only after Disney CEO Bob Iger resigned in disgust over the state’s draconian COVID policies that had kept California theme parks closed.

Sadly, that’s not an isolated case of Newsom-style paralysis by analysis. For years, Californians have waited breathlessly for the end product of the governor’s task force on oxygen, part of a statewide "Oxygen Strategy" to address the shortage of the gas amidst the pandemic.

An investigation tasked with getting to the root causes of a disaster shouldn’t be confused with an actual action plan for how to make the Golden State more fire-resistant. As such, whatever form the "independent" examination takes shape, prepare to be underwhelmed.

Read the full piece here.

Down the totem pole from Bass is Los Angeles fire chief Kristin Crowley. In the months before the blazes broke out, she warned Bass and the city council that the department needed more firefighters and civilian operators, writing in a Nov. 18 memo that Los Angeles employed roughly half as many firefighters as the National Fire Protection Association recommends and was experiencing slow response times as a result.

Two months later, as historic wildfires erupted, Bass's administration pulled that memo from its website, the Free Beacon's Susannah Luthi reports.

"The New York Times referenced the memo in a Thursday piece, and it was available online at this link as recently as Friday," writes Luthi. "By Saturday night, however, the memo was replaced with a message stating, '404! We are sorry, but the page you requested was not found.'"

"The newfound error message comes as Bass faces criticism for her fire department budget and her decision to travel to Ghana after meteorologists warned of 'critical' fire conditions in the days leading up to the blazes. Still, other memos Crowley wrote criticizing the city remain available online, including a Dec. 4 missive in which Crowley says her department 'is facing unprecedented operational challenges due to the elimination of critical civilian positions and a $7 million reduction in Overtime Variable Staffing House (V-Hours).' That memo went viral as the fires broke out; Crowley's Nov. 18 memo did not."

We asked Bass's office about the disappearing memo. Instead of addressing it, a representative referred us to a Los Angeles Times article that defends Bass's fire department budget.

Back in the Beltway, the lame duck Biden administration is spending its final days in office shoring up its DEI spending—including abroad. That's according to non-public funding documents reviewed by our Adam Kredo, which show that Biden's State Department and U.S. Agency for International Development "quietly pushed out $1 million in taxpayer funding late last year for diversity, equity, and inclusion programs" in Indonesia, Guatemala, and Kenya.

In Indonesia, the money will help "underrepresented" students "gain access to higher education opportunities in the United States." In Guatemala, the United States will support an "Indigenous language technology program" meant to "ensure services are provided using local Indigenous language" (nearly 95 percent of Guatemalans speak Spanish). And in Kenya, our fearless leaders are spending to "build a collaborative bridge between U.S. higher education institutions, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities; select Kenyan universities; and the private sector." Have you heard that L.A. is burning?

"The funding initiatives reflect a broader effort from outgoing secretary of state Antony Blinken to embed a host of DEI initiatives at home and abroad ahead of Trump’s Jan. 20 inauguration," writes Kredo.

"Just before the State Department finalized the $1 million funding package, for example, Blinken issued an internal diplomatic cable touting sweeping DEI initiatives across the agency, including dedicated 'reflection rooms' and 'all-gender restrooms' at American embassies abroad, the Free Beacon reported in December. The incoming GOP administration has already pledged to eradicate DEI programming across the federal government."

Away from the Beacon:

Before becoming mayor of L.A., Karen Bass said she was hesitant to ditch the international travel that comes with being a member of Congress but ultimately pledged not to "travel internationally—the only places I would go would be D.C., Sacramento, San Francisco, and New York, in relation to L.A." We know what happened next.

Jake Sullivan stared into a camera and said, with a straight face, that the "American people are safer and the country is better off than we were four years ago."

Students for Justice in Palestine has a way to fix the "manufactured catastrophe" that is the L.A. wildfires: "LAND BACK. REPARATIONS. DEATH TO IMPERIALISM." That’ll do it!

3 Humvees stolen from Tustin Army Reserve Center

January 10, 2025 /  KCAL News

Thieves stole three Humvees from the Tustin Army Reserve Center Wednesday night. The Tustin Police Department said the suspects cut a lock to enter the parking lot between 8 and 11:30 p.m. They stole the vehicles, one of which was armored, and left at an unknown time. Additionally, multiple storage lockers were broken into and missing gear. The suspect allegedly tried to cut a lock to uniform storage but failed. The Army said the suspects did not steal any weapons or ammunition other than 18 bayonets.

Here is a full list of the missing items:

3 Humvees (1 armored) with the admin numbers,  ADMIN: HQ-61,  ADMIN: HQ-81 and ADMIN: HHC-06 painted on the hood

8 machine gun vehicle mount

7 free-standing machine gun tripods

Medical equipment

40 pairs of binoculars

18 bayonets

Anyone with information about the case should contact Detective Schaller at (714) 573-3245.

With the National Guard controlling the streets, who is going to question a National Guard convoy of 3 vehicles? And Newscum has invited Trump to come see the damage.....Uh, I am going to recommend against it, might be some nasty surprises in store.

Dillinger Gang's Winchester 1907 Self-Loader: The Lebman Conversion

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7q5JDX0CHag

Hyman Lebman was a gunsmith in Texas who made a variant of firearms for some of the most notorious gangsters of the 1930s. One of his specialties was to take the Winchester Model 1907 Self-Loader and cut the barrel down, attach a Cutt's Compensator, and a Thompson gun vertical front grip on a replacement metal handguard. Dillinger's friend and compatriot Homer Van Meter was particularly fond of this sort of rifle. When Dillinger was arrested in Tucson in January 1934, two of these rifles were among the guns taken from him. One was one display at the Tucson PD headquarters for many years, although it appears to have been taken down not long ago. Incidentally, I would love to get a look at one or both of those examples - especially to see if they are actually converted to fully automatic. I was unable to get any response form inquires to the Tucson Police while filming this video, but if anyone from the department happens to see this video and can arrange something, please reach out to me at admin@!forgottenweapons.com ! A followup video on an original example would be excellent. Anyway, a shop called Bull Creek Arms in Idaho produced a short run of 20 reproduction Lebman-style 1907s about 15 years ago and that is what we are looking at today. For more information on the original Winchester 1907SL, including its use in World War One, I suggest the C&Rsenal video on the subject:

The Simpson Standard

January 12th, 2025

Dear T. Allen,

It was a busy week here in DC! Congress started the week off strong by certifying the historic election of President Donald J. Trump. I'm looking forward to working with President Trump and Vice President Vance on the America First Agenda. January 20th can't come soon enough!

Throughout the last four years under the Biden administration, violent criminals have poured over the border and into our communities. Tragically, innocent Americans like Laken Riley have been impacted by these open-border policies. House Republicans are working to put a stop to this by protecting American communities from criminal illegal aliens and strengthening our immigration laws.

Also, this week, I introduced a bill that would add a needed federal district judgeship to resolve currently understaffed and backlogged courts in Idaho. Throughout my time in Congress, I have fought for a more efficient and manageable court system in Idaho. Most recently, I supported the bipartisan and bicameral JUDGES Act. President Biden vetoed the JUDGES Act last month despite this legislation having broad support.

Certifying President Trump's Historic Election

This week, Congress certified the election of President Trump. It is an exciting time here in DC, and I look forward to working with him to advance policies that benefit Idaho and strengthen our nation.

Listen to my latest What's Happening in Washington here!

Laken Riley Act

Laken Riley's horrific murder at the hands of an illegal immigrant who was released into the United States by the Biden administration should have never happened.

I once again supported the Lake Riley Act on the House floor to ensure criminal illegal immigrants, like Laken's murderer, are detained and deported.

Adding a Third Federal Judge for Idaho

Justice for Idahoans is being delayed because our state desperately needs a third district judge. President Biden's veto of the bipartisan, bicameral JUDGES Act last month was a slap in the face to Americans who have been waiting far too long for their day in court.

My bill will alleviate overburdened judges, reduce the caseload backlog, and provide justice promptly. I will continue to fight to ensure this critical legislation gets across the finish line. Read my full statement and more about this bill here.

Seems like his crack team of investigators might have at least found THIS, if the media could…. Guess he got busy fighting America First Republicans in Florida. Just a little Sunshine-state aside.

Judge Issues Weird Sentence In Pennsylvania Voter Fraud Case

https://thefederalist.com/2025/01/10/judge-issues-weird-sentence-in-pennsylvania-voter-fraud-case/

Pulley, 62, registered to vote in three places: Montgomery and Philadelphia counties in Pennsylvania, and Broward County, Florida, using a false home address and a false Social Security number. He requested a mail-in ballot to vote in Philadelphia County in the 2020 general election, while also voting from Montgomery and Broward counties. He also voted in both Montgomery and Philadelphia counties in 2022. Pulley was given three years’ probation, fined $9,500 and a $400 special assessment, and Goldberg also ordered him to write a letter explaining why he committed the offenses. He was also ordered to complete 100 hours of community service, with 50 of those hours dedicated to “an entity that works toward the promotion of free and fair elections.”

So the judge sentenced him to election fraud skool?

The Federalist asked a DOJ spokesperson if the court specified which “entity” Pulley should serve at, or would he choose it himself, and asked for the name of the entity. The DOJ did not respond, and that detail is not included in the court papers. Nonprofits dedicated to free and fair elections exist with all political views, from left to right leaning, and not all are created equally.

Simple - the judge is one of them....

Politicians in wealthier countries are pursuing the most expensive ways to generate intermittent electricity. I just heard of the passing of singer Anita Bryant, at age 84. Though she is still vilified by the leftist/godless mass media as an “alarmist”, she made a genuine stand for righteous living. Her warnings about extending special rights to homosexuals were prescient. Today, 48 years later, we can in retrospect see that she was absolutely right about the moral decay in our nation, and how those trends were accelerated by “gay” and lesbian activists. Let me summarize the “”LGBTQ+” pushing, bluntly and tersely: 50 years ago, they demanded tolerance. 30 years ago, they demanded acceptance. 10 years ago, they demanded marriage equality. But, now, in the 2020s, they are demanding participation in their vile month-long celebrations, demanding adoption rights (sometimes with disastrous results) and they brag that they will groom our children into their “lifestyle.”  They are now coercing everyone. Some of this corercion is subtle, and some of it is overt.  Anita, you were right! – JWR

Cataracts.

Dr Ardis has an excellent discussion in two parts about the real causes of cataracts (Part 1) and natural treatment/prevention measures (Part 2).

Part 1

Yes, it’s prescription drugs, again….

Drugs associated with cataract formation represent an unmet need in cataract research

Over 70 drugs have been associated with a known or suspected increased risk of cataract formation (2). These drugs can be grouped into four distinct categories based on the evidence underpinning their association with cataract formation: (i) Known category drugs are known to increase the risk of cataract in patients; (ii) Probable category drugs are likely to cause increased risk of cataracts; (iii) Possible category drugs, and (iv) Uncertain category drugs may increase cataract risk but the data is inconclusive (Supplementary Table 1). A collective analysis of the prescribing rates for the cataract-associated drugs in these four categories is yet to be performed.

Conservative legislators have hit the ground running! On Monday we listened to Governor Brad Little deliver his State of the State Address, where he explained how he was going to spend – excuse us, “invest” – your hard-earned tax dollars. He proposed setting aside $100 million for tax relief, but we think the Legislature can do better. Look for some substantial tax cuts on the House Revenue and Taxation Committee’s menu this year!

The Governor also proposed $50 million for school choice, which is the same amount in a new bill that Rep. Wendy Horman will introduce soon. We will be watching this very carefully to make sure that any school choice proposal gives real options to Idaho families without bringing the heavy hand of government onto private schools and homeschool families.

Our own co-chair Rep. Heather Scott introduced the first bill of the session on Tuesday morning, a memorial that condemns the way in which the Supreme Court forced gay marriage on the states. Idahoans have long believed that marriage is a lifelong union between a man and a woman, and it’s not right for five justices to impose a different view on our state.

This issue also touches on state sovereignty, which is very important to our members. It’s time for Idaho to start taking back its constitutional authority, with regards to education, with regards to land ownership, and with regard to institutions such as marriage. We will be dealing with this issue a lot this session, so stay tuned!

The Sickness That Infects CNN

I have a soft spot in my heart for CNN. When Pat Buchanan was in the Reagan White House serving as communications director, I filled in for him numerous times on the CNN “Crossfire” show, presenting the conservative opinion in response to the liberal opinion offered by figures like Tom Braden or Michael Kinsley. That balanced program went down the drain and CNN became an organ of the Democratic Party.

The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods

JAMES WESLEY RAWLES

JANUARY 9, 2025

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods. This column is a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from JWR. Our goal is to educate our readers, to help them to recognize emerging threats, and to be better prepared for both disasters and negative societal trends. You can’t mitigate a risk if you haven’t first identified a risk. In today’s column, we look at the risk of terrorist sleeper agents and cells in the United States.

More Than 1,000 Jihadi Sleepers In The US?

Video: Former CIA Officer: There Are More Than 1,000 Jihadi Sleepers In The US Planning Major Homeland Attacks.

Countering Terrorist Sleeper Cells in the United States

FBI’s Frontline Defense: Countering Terrorist Sleeper Cells in the United States. JWR’s Comments:  Based on its track record, the FBI seems to manufacture far more terrorists by grooming them and conspiring with them. If need be, undercover agents or their paid informants even gives terrorists driving lessons.

Abortion Was the Leading Cause of Death in 2024, Worldwide

Abortion was the Leading Cause of Death in 2024, With Over 45 Million Killed.

JWR’s Comment: That is a staggering figure. About the same as the entire population of Argentina, every year. Or think of it as nine Nazi Holocausts, per year. Please pray for the lives of the innocent unborn!

Biden Bans Most Gas-Fueled Tankless Water Heaters

Reader D.S.V. sent us this, from Zero Hedge: Biden Quietly Bans Most Gas Powered Tankless Water Heaters.

Net Neutrality Rule Struck Down

From reader C.B. a piece published by the left-biased Washington Post: In blow to Democrats, federal appeals court strikes down net neutrality.  A quote from the article:

“The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit struck down the FCC’s net neutrality rules governing internet service providers Thursday in an early policy win for Republicans seeking to reverse Biden-era industry regulation.

Democrats at the Federal Communications Commission had considered the reinstatement of net neutrality a major accomplishment under the Biden administration. The reversal is a glimpse of the years ahead, during which President-elect Donald Trump’s team has vowed to broadly undo his predecessor’s regulation of private-sector companies.

The net neutrality issue revolves around how heavily federal regulators should control the companies that build and operate the internet. Democrats favor heavier oversight along the lines of how traditional telephone networks are regulated, while Republicans have argued for a lighter touch. Net neutrality was adopted by the FCC under the Obama administration, reversed under Trump, then reinstated under President Joe Biden.”

Which Phone Apps are Spying on You?

A Naomi Brockwell interview video: Privacy Expert Shows which Phone Apps are Spying on You…

“Privacy expert Naomi Brockwell told John Stossel that most of the apps on his phone are spying on him and that he has allowed them to record his location, identify the people who he communicates with, activate the microphone to listen to him, and more. She explained Google Chrome is terrible for privacy as it broadcasts your personal information to data dealers anad she recommended another browser. She advised replacing Google maps with Apple maps on iPhones because it anonymizes your data.”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Resigns

Linked over at the Whatfinger.com news aggregation site: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigns. JWR’s Comments:  Most folks in western Canada loathe Trudeau.  He should have been drummed out of office during the Canadian trucker protests. Even the advent of a more conservative government won’t restore freedom to Canadians. Not much has changed. The nation needs fundamental change — perhaps a shift to a Constitutional government with a solid bill of rights.
