Glenn researches and writes about the history of printing, focused particularly on newspaper comics and printing molds. Order his book How Comics Were Made. He’s a long-time technology journalist, who contributes regularly to Macworld and TidBITS and writes books in the Take Control Books series. A former Amazon employee (1996–97) who used to eat burritos with Bezos, Glenn is more interestingly a two-time Jeopardy! winner.

Working on a book the details of which will go live in September (and crowdfunding in February), and just had an interview with one of my biggest “gets” I'd hoped for as I want to include their insights and reproductions of their materials in the book! Will share more soon but I was all aflutter.

But isn’t the state legislature gerrymandered up the wazoo? And they’ve been extra frisky with the voter suppression laws. Seems like they wouldn’t suddenly decide they needed a new power if they didn’t intend to use it.

I wish I had your confidence, but Republican fuckery always seems to be waiting just offstage.

nostr:npub12ywpv42mfqvgfd4y57ms2t6h6mv2wr94ka8n5tq5vnr5twqnllzsux86cj Trump no longer commands unlimited support; Kemp hates him; the Constitution is harder to change; Kemp and Georgian GOPs rely on swing moderate voters.

nostr:npub12ywpv42mfqvgfd4y57ms2t6h6mv2wr94ka8n5tq5vnr5twqnllzsux86cj I mean, they could try to pull the prosecutor, etc., but I think given the slim margins of victory they have had in some elections…I don’t know. If Kemp were a fierce Trump supporter, maybe. I don't think he cares. I believe he wants ABT (anybody but Trump) as the GOP nominee, so this may work in his favor.

nostr:npub1e0sg4hfxaeu67vmpx2vfedru765lyw35yp7t4r7uhwswra3hxzsqjan6zr The fact is, he’s not re-electable. For all the drama right now, he’s going to win the primary and potentially be convicted of crimes while running, and lose the presidency by a bigger electoral margin. There are only a few deciding states and the Republicans didn’t seize control of them. Biden won during the pandemic. RFK Jr is a joke.

Man, if I was still on bird xite I would point to my tweets saying “they’re all going to jail”

mmmm, close enough:

nostr:npub1hvdfn5ne7zvks3ztfewr00vdjv3kve4nddht43p8fjepc8rn6yasz69sq9 Constitutionally being an imprisoned felon is not a bar to holding the presidency (as I understand it). It seem absurd, but it’s true.

Ok, I honestly think he may not be able to wriggle out of this one

I think we’ll be wrestling with that with Alyx as they may need a kind of higher education approach that doesn’t exist. Plenty of time. They start junior year in a few weeks and then they could gap year or take a longer break and work.

Cf: OJ Simpson. He “won” his criminal case; lost in a civil courtroom, as the burden there is preponderance of evidence, not beyond a reasonable doubt. The jury in the lawsuit decided he’d likely killed his wife and her friend.

And then I finished it yesterday. Which is nice as I've had a helluva time reading for enjoyment since the pandemic started. I'll read books for work and research, articles online, etc., but I almost became incapable of reading novels or non-fiction that isn't work related from 2020 on…some recovery by early 2022.

I didn't think I had an extensive Japanese cinema knowledge, but then I got all three bonus questions on University Challenge about an actor who appeared in apparently three of the films I have seen or at least knew the plot of?

(The question writers seem to like the Kurosawa movie Ran. I believe I took a … date to see it in high school at the local art-house cinema? We were both big nerds.)

Picked up Cloud Atlas while on vacation but was too hot and tired to read on that trip. Opened it yesterday to try a chapter and am suddenly halfway through!

nostr:npub1hvdfn5ne7zvks3ztfewr00vdjv3kve4nddht43p8fjepc8rn6yasz69sq9 Fair point. My hope is that enough people see what the IA is doing here and how ridiculous the claims of these record executives are, and are able to create those kinds of exceptions. (Maybe it will produce a turn in intellectual property rights which have for decades been moving in the direction of more restrictions and longer terms.)

nostr:npub1q5n6q7wxyj7dz2srpsxqsuqe4qv45v23ucrgnmnmwc9azulld4uq9fvwcn Well, you know that the change in © law a few years ago on recordings unlocked 50 years of recordings into the public domain? That was a big deal and swept a lot of 78s in. The revised law means the rest of the 78 rpm period will be swept in over the next 20 years. So that helped the Library of Congress and others who already had digitizations. LOC did a limited streaming version with arrange permission.

nostr:npub1hds9e45s9m9q6l50lmt7pwg757crcz5w5n7ld3e43ydge3vj5c7qf693ym I watched his documentary on it (homework for a Gutenberg class two summers ago). It was great! I think he's a little sketchy on a couple details but they are arguable. He did say inaccurate things on QI but they were correct in the doc.

Just realized I own etched zinc plates so I could legitimately invite someone over to look at my etchings.

nostr:npub1jflkjavwfhp0w4407vrxxnw8hdyxglq4aua29sru6pg6dvfkg8fs8mru8c In my recollection, Trump’s attorneys have asked many judges to recuse themselves. I have no recollection of any doing so?
