Saying there's no communications platform possible without ads propping it up is like saying there's no money without money printing and theft (i.e. fiat). Those platforms were never necessary and those incentive models only existed because uncorruptible digital money wasn't ready yet.

VPN use in China is a whole can of worms. A few one-off uses by tourists for a couple months at a time seems simple enough (businesspeople even get free VPN access at hotels -- seriously don't use it) , but keeping up VPN use for a decade and not end up on any list is another. Servers get shut down, payments get frozen, lots of problems the friends across the Strait deal with that badasses like you don't ๐ตโ๐ซ
That's where you are wrong. There are places in the world where the window to the internet is effectively only fagbook and jewtube. For example, there are mobile carriers that won't let you on the internet if you aren't logged into fagbook first, leaving Facebook cookies everywhere they visit. (Nothing to 55555555 about)

Agreed, that part is great ๐ unfortunately outside of nostr clients, putting friendly chatter and hilarious memes on your feed isn't really up to you.
For example, on all platforms there's an algorithm that keeps track how quickly you swipe away/leave posts as a means to gauge where your interest lies. It then searches up a set of ads that matches up with whatever it finds engaging to you, then gets all the advertisers to bid for your attention. Whoever pays top dollar or who has the largest contract behind the scenes gets to be the next post on your feed.
Happens all in a blink of an eye, and keeps on repeating. The user-curated feed is an illusion. I used to think this stuff was cool, it really isn't -- I was in programmatic digital advertising until 2018. Towards the end of my career, the industry shifted towards taking design cues from the gaming/gambling industry, AdBlock has little to no impact; all it takes is to add some annoyances to get less savy users to turn it off.

It's the most valuable thing in our short little lives, it affects your health and your wealth.
Social Media on its own is rather quite empowering because it allows people to build up networks that would otherwise be impossible. Attention dedicated to it is well-deserved.
However at present, the ability for anyone to build those networks are at the whims of companies that control the platforms beholden to their advertisers and/or investors. Rather than building towards empowering people, they measure success in eyeball-to-tap ratio, aka engagement. When the measure to success is for the sake of bullshit metrics......it feeds the idea that attention becomes bullshit too
It's a slot machine which takes attention tokens and pays out dopamine. It uses the same principles of flashing lights and repetitive sound bites to keep patrons playing.
It wouldn't be so bad but with how fucked the money is; the casinoes need you to never stop playing

I use longform when I need formatting or if it's something I plan to revisit/edit.
Sometimes I start writing a post and keep adding to it ; i send it off when I can't immediately add anything else to it. I also do this in general conversation, my rambling drives people nuts too. Can't help it ๐ซฃ
