I’m looking for my next challenge in some intersection of open source, community, and developer advocacy! I am passionate about helping others and doing good with technology, in particular—thus I’m especially interested in working with a non-profit or strongly value-aligned organization.

I’ve loved my work with nostr:nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kyqpqva75dypdz9yhstrf9p07c0lk2hs2nt0xnnt4tmmlmrqej5qx8nkq5erd7c, but unfortunately due to strategic decisions, my particular role won’t exist in the coming months.

My partner heard of the Camp Snap camera which is a new camera made specifically to emulate a disposable point and shoot experience for kids at camps, and explicitly doesn’t have a screen which I find neat—but reviews are mixed and it feels weird to buy a newly-produced thing when surely there are a bunch of old digital cameras sitting around at thrift shops… right?

I visited every thrift shop within a 30-min drive of my house and found one… which didn’t work. 😭

My six-year-old has a cheap Bluey-themed digital camera, and it has been great for capturing things from their perspective and starting to learn a bit about photography without just being glued to a phone… but the quality is BAD. Like, worse than 20-year-old digital point and shoot cameras bad.

Sooooo I have started down the rabbit hole of ā€œvintageā€ (seriously?) ā€œdigicamsā€ (really?).

Friday night? Perfect time to drop a blog post that might sound like clickbait, but that I genuinely hope can help forge a path forward while making everyone happy—or at least pissing everyone off equally (sometimes the best you can ask for!)

Something fun we’ve been doing at nostr:nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kyqpqdwl80nvcshpn3ups7p5s7kpar5ndesn57sj4777x6l2yg6khlh8qk2jxdd is running learning programs where we help learners get used to actual open source collaboration—with video games!

WAIT

Not ā€œeducational gamesā€ or ā€œgamified learningā€ā€”no, actually contributing to a real game using real open source workflows. Here are some fun results from one cohort so far; check out the Extra Levels in Everlasting Candy, an extension of the open source game Candy Wrapper:

Is anyone in desktop Linux excited by the possibilities of ā€œAI,ā€ e.g. image generation, large language models, machine learning—especially focused on on-device, responsible implementation?

I feel like it’s been a decade of ā€œwell, if we could train an ML model, we could do Xā€¦ā€ on the Linux desktop, but now so much of that work is tainted by the current ā€œAIā€ craze.

Can’t we still have nice ā€œsmartā€ features?

Can anyone familiar with GNOME, NetworkManager, Fedora Silverblue, or Intel network cards help?

I have an Intel NUC running Fedora Silverblue 40 with GNOME 46. It’s connected to Ethernet but at some point I connected it to Wi-Fi. Since the Ethernet connection gives better performance—and I don’t want unnecessary interference—I turn off Wi-Fi in GNOME. Whenever I reboot, both Ethernet AND Wi-Fi are disabled. If I leave Wi-Fi enabled, both remain enabled when I reboot.

The best way to show someone how great modern Linux has gotten is to have them set up a new computer dual booting Windows and Linux. I’m helping some colleagues out and the only complaints are with Windows, not Endless OS. šŸ˜

What's the recommendation for a library-based music player on GNOME these days? Rhythmbox and GNOME Music both seem largely unmaintained—am I reading too much into that?

nostr:npub12f7r2gjj0ch84wdh5kg03gkmjyskya6zlxq70cxlk5qm5sysjhuq08lkxh we just always use stubby holders or for the americans a koozie, assuming you don't have a bunch of duplicates you'll never get them mixed up

nostr:npub183n8fp0xavfvuejszsfzkf44af77j6xfgmk33k2whm7ktflcr4jqswtahh that would work! I don't have koozies but maybe that's a reason to have some…

nostr:npub12f7r2gjj0ch84wdh5kg03gkmjyskya6zlxq70cxlk5qm5sysjhuq08lkxh I wonder if there's a way to buy up three year old unsupported devices at scale and re-flash them with real GNU/Linux šŸ¤”

That way you could both prolong the lifespan of the devices and make them more useful for kids.

nostr:npub1d76s7zapvltswuyrayjk9kwey4jqkja0frtkfxkarszf0fykjzwq93897u unfortunately it’s SUPER dependent on the specific hardware and oftentimes the bootloaders are locked down. I believe it’s similar to the state of Android phones where a few with unlockable bootloaders exist, but the vast majority require an exploit if they can be reflashed at all.

This is where I feel like Right to Repair regulation should require reflashability at least after the EOL date, but also I feel like congresspeople would not understand the concept at all…

On the one hand, I applaud improving access to devices for kids—on the other, we have seen this play out before:

🚫 Chromebooks are *still* nearly useless for kids when they’re offline

šŸ›œ Internet access is over-reported due to social stigma when self reporting, and ā€œa kid can walk to a coffee shopā€ often counting as broadband access

šŸ”’ Ecosystem lock-in means Google gatekeeps what ā€œreal appsā€ can be easily used

šŸ’€ In three years, these devices will likely be unsupported
