When it’s to late…
Forgot to elaborate more on the walleye and laker ice fishing. All I’ve ever caught for walleye was around the 3lb range open or hard water.
Only caught one laker during hard water season which was around 8lbs and was caught on my moms Walmart special. Likely only 2-4LB test line. It was out there all day, and went I went out to check on it at around 5pm the rod was pointing right down the hole, bale was open somehow, barely in the rod holder and hardly any line left on the spool.
I was like wtf? Closed the bale, reeled up all the slack and then realized It was game on. No idea how long he was on there for but damn lucky to get him into the freezer. Noticed his one fin was clipped so it was a stocked fish and was likely stocked years earlier. This was when we had the family cottage.
I used to ice fish quite a bit back in 2009-2011, even had a 2 person clam hut. Still have all the hard water gear, just no hut.
I’ve taken up snowmobiling in the winter time, therefore haven’t had/made much time for the hard water fishing.
Fishing overall is definitely something I want to get back into. It was so much easier when we had the family cottage to go to.
Snowmobiling (trail riding) has turned into a huge passion of mine over the past 10yrs or so, so that’s the main reason ice fishing has taken a backseat.
I feel if I’m ever able to buy a cottage of my own one day, that’s when I’ll build a hut and get back into ice fishing again on a more regular basis. But, since reconnecting with my old buddy again, I’ll likely get up north where he is located at least once and get out for some ice fishing. Im hoping for it, but I’m that type that waits for an invite, so we’ll see what happens. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼
