Discovering what the Bible teaches about marriage...

When is it okay to remove a Christian brother from your life?

1 Corinthians 5:11-13: "But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such a one no not to eat. For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within? But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person."

Are we called to obey Christ?

John 15:8-14: "Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you."

Rev 11:19: "And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail."

On the flip side, there's likely not a single person who opted out and now regrets it.

Mat 24:27: "For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be."

Better to reconcile or cut people from your life?

2Cor 5:18-19: "And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation."

Mat 5:23-24: "Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath aught against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift."

Certainly men and women have different roles. What does the Bible say that indicates different requirements for husbands and wives with regard to forgiveness and reconciliation?

Eph 5:22: "Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord."

Eph 5:25: "Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;"

Some say men can have multiple wives but not vice versa. This would conflict with a man having "his own" wife and he being "her own" husband.

1Cor 7:2-3: "Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband. Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband."

On the topic of forgiveness and reconciliation in marriage, God seems to treat men and women similarly:

Mar 10:11-12: "And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery."

Congrats! Hopefully I'd be overqualified someday soon.
