Depends on the friends.

If they have a bit of technical chops, understand how lightning works, and are up for managing their liquidity themselves, then node-in-the-phone could work for them, particularly as various solutions for receiving while offline are becoming more popular.

If they are just getting into Bitcoin, or they just want something that works without them having to worry about it, and they trust you with their spending money, then it may be more convenient for them to just have you host their wallet on your node. For instance, my wife and daughters are absolutely not going to take the time to learn how Lightning works, so node-in-the-phone is just going to frustrate them. But I can host their wallet for them and they'll have no issues, and they aren't blindly trusting some big custodian.

This also helps keep Lightning more decentralized. If they didn't have me to host their wallet for them, they would use CoinOS, or Wallet of Satoshi, or MiniBits, and pretty soon all the Bitcoiners that don't have interest in running their own Lightning node, even a very basic one on their phone, will be with just a few major custodians.

Meanwhile, if you have friends who are passionate about learning everything there is to know about how Bitcoin works, and they like getting hands-on with the tech, then you should absolutely encourage them to run their own Bitcoin full-node with a Lightning node.

I had the impression before, when I used Phoenix, and Breeze, that they are not that complex in a sense, that they create the lightning channel and liquidity on receive. In Phoenix, you can also rent bigger channels. Of course it has a cost. Havent tried Zeus yet!

Btw, how do you look for other lightning nodes to connect to? Why would anyone want to connect to a new node?

Move across? You mean transfer funds from an Alby Hub wallet to an LNBits wallet and vice versa, or switch from using one type of wallet to the other?

If the former, then that's incredibly easy. Just create an invoice in the wallet you want the funds to go to, and paste or scan it in the wallet you want the funds sent from.

If the latter, there isn't any way to import a wallet that is on Alby Hub into LNBits or the other way around. At least, not that I am aware of. You would have to set up a new wallet in the one you want to switch to and then transfer the funds over from the old wallet. That means any wallet connections you had set up in the old wallet would need to be set up all over again in the new one.

What do you think? What benefits does hosting a node, and sharing with friends have instead of all of you using a node in the phone?

Everything that is on the bleeding edge will be filled with a lot of "nerd talk." Most of that gets abstracted away naturally as it becomes more mainstream. There are still a LOT of Bitcoiners who have never made a Lightning transaction, let alone used eCash via Cashu protocol or a fedimint, so we're definitely still in the "bleeding edge" phase.

And you're wrong about one thing. People DO talk about the various payment rails they use to transact in the dollar all the time.

"Just Venmo me your share of the bill."

"They only take cards here, not cash."

"When are they going to get with the times and let me use Apple Pay?"

"Can you believe that lady in front of us still pays for her groceries using a CHECK!?"

So we really do talk about each of these different ways of making transactions quite often without realizing it, even though we all understand that they are just different ways of using the underlying monetary unit of the dollar. And we don't consider it "nerd talk" even if we don't really understand how each of those payment rails work under the hood.

Actually you are right. About the last part, it is quite interesting how diversly one can accept dollars. Maybe this can be also a key to understand bitcoin.

Lightning is like venmo, cashapp, revolut, paypal, but with one distinction. It is like all these apps can pay the others. No more: "Damn, she has no Venmo."

To the first part, I wrote this post, to somehow start this discussion. Maybe we can come up with some ideas to bring this forward.

Once LNBits has NWC available from the main plugin repository, it will probably be the most robust option for those with a bit more technical know-how. However, Alby Hub is the easiest way for someone new to get into running a Lightning node for their friends and family.

Thanks! How complicated is it to move across the 2? I know that lnbits supports both lnd and core, but alby hub only lnd. So the lightning implementation does not seem a problem. What do you think?

Why are we talking about cashu, bitcoin, lightning? Its all nerd talk, and hell confusing. I am a nerd, but come on! We are better then this!

We dont talk about physical dollar, electronic dollar, etc... Or other confusing stuff...

Bitcoin shall be just bitcoin for the average Joe. If cares, and want to become an advanced user, could learn further.

I was thinking that maybe:

- On chain bitcoin shall be called bitcoin a vault.

- Visible balance shall be a cashu wallet or a built in node.

- You put your BTC in your vault to secure it. And to really secure it, you have to pay a cost. (on-chain fee)

What do you think? Not mature, but wanted to talk about it.

aren't all start9 services Tor only until the next big release?

have you tried using Orbit or Invizible to route the Bitwarden app over Tor?

It is. I want to use it over tor. In theory it shall work with orbot with the app, but does not.

In Tor browser it works, but in the BitwardenApp, it says "Connection failure"

Usually creatures make free content, and exclusive content for paywall. Or free content + ad revenue. At least this is what you can see in most places. Or even the combination of these.

i dont remember having to do anything other than add the bitwarden app in orbot and run orbot in vpn mode.

Did you have issues installing a cert on your phone for it?

yes, but i need to run it with orbot vpn. i prefer to use local access and it syncs once i get home everyday and connect to the local network of my start9 server.

Thanks! Did you need to do anything special to make it work with orbot? For me it does not seem to work with orbot.

I also had to do some tweeking to make it work via Tor on PC.

Security and privacy is not the same.

You can use VPNs for privacy reasons, and in such case, it makes sense if you pay in a private way.

Otherwise you leak personal data to your VPN providers. And if you want to stay private, it is better to stay private even in front of your VPN provider. Better providers allows it.
