They're avoiding libel claims. It's the same when they use "scare quotes". But they seem happy enough to print lies when it suits them. It's all weasel words.

I'd love for journalists to just come out and use the words racist and sexist, wait for the libel claim, and prove themselves right in court.

It would also be interesting to cross-reference socio-economic background and how health inequality in childhood affects eventual adult height.
