Whether it be through different features in different server software (Misskey, Pleroma, Akkoma) or the type of moderation to employ (strict, moderate, loose, none), people can choose a server to suit their needs well. Centralized social media, meanwhile, will be the one to control how users experience their platform. You cannot change how it is moderated or how it works. So, if you're unhappy about it, there's nothing to do except leave.

A lot of people I want to interact with are still on these big instances, and unless it's a server like Misskey.io (which seems quite lax with moderation), I'm scared that the server I'm in will be defamed just because of the actions of an individual.
