I think weirdly, it's not the economics of Europe arming itself that's the problem. The EU's economy is vast. It's more that security politics became vulgar on the continent, and the safe option was just to let America make the hard choices and criticise it afterwards without helping.
US-ians think they're shouldering some incredible burden, but honestly the defence of Europe isn't much. Congress is tearing itself apart of 6 months over $95bn in 2nd hand arms, but they've spent $3tn of Federal money on entitlements under that time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah, but they're also the people you want to reach. And long term i think the Mastadon team are right that most people want a managed space where certain speech is banned in certain spaces, but you can choose which ones to be in.
And if you have a space anyone can write into that had a domain name and an address, that's a lot of liability. IIRC there was a Mastadon node for sex worker's and it shutdown because the liability went criminal in the USA. Look what happened to the Backpage founders.
