A Kyoto man was arrested for violating the Unfair Competition Prevention Act after allegedly selling illegally modded Pokemon for the Nintendo Switch software, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, for up to 13,000 yen a pop.
According to the report, 36-year-old Yoshihiro Yamakawa, an interior decorator from Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture, tampered with Pokemon using a special tool between December 2022 and March 2023.
He posted on the Internet ads, saying, “Now only! Order 6 for 4,000 yen!” and was selling different colored and rare Pokemon for around 13,000 yen in response to customer requests.
The police arrested Yamakawa on April 9, and in response to the investigation, he reportedly confessed to the charges, saying, “I did it to earn a living.” The police are also investigating in more detail, as sales of the falsified data have reportedly amounted to several million yen.
Anyone can download the tools for free online; no specialized knowledge or skills are required to tamper with the mods. The buying and selling of modded Pokemon is suspected of being rampant on the Internet, and the police are urging caution as doing so is considered a crime.
