Sign the petition urging the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission and the legislators, governors, and natural resources departments of South Carolina, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware to do all in their power to ban the brutal taking of horseshoe crabs for their blood or use as bait โ including immediately nixing any proposals that will increase their exploitation or reduce protections within their natural habitats.

The excessive exploitation by humans means horseshoe crabs now are listed as โModerately Depletedโ on the IUCNโs Red List. Migratory birds who rely on horseshoe crab eggs, including the red knot and piping plover, also are disappearing at alarming rates.
Meanwhile, synthetic alternatives โ which donโt involve a single drop of horseshoe crab blood โ have been approved and are in use by several major pharmaceutical companies.

No defenseless animal deserves to be drained of their blood while fully conscious and then be tossed aside, weakened and half alive. The cruelty must stop now.
Due to the decimation of the horseshoe crabs, conservationists in Delaware have pitched a proposal for strengthened protections for horseshoe crabs. The five states harboring the bleeding companies would do well to take note and follow suit.

An investigation by NPR revealed fishermen collecting the crabs for the bleeding companies showed little concern for their welfare, with collectors tossing them into boats by the hundreds or picking the crabs up by their tails โ in direct contradiction of recommended welfare practices. One of the bleeding companies also has been sued for repeatedly accepting horseshoe crabs unlawfully taken from off-limit islands and from inside a national wildlife refuge.

a substance used to test for bacterial contamination.
The tortured crabs then are sold as bait or dropped back into the ocean โ where many of them reportedly can no longer breed and where up to 30 percent of them die prolonged deaths caused from weakness or an inability to protect themselves due to damage from rough handling.

STOP BLEEDING HORSESHOE CRABS TO DEATH
Thousands of defenseless horseshoe crabs are being brutally drained of their blood in record numbers for the biomedical industry โ with news detailing numerous violations of harvesting permits and minimal welfare practices.
Five bleeding companies drained a record-breaking 700,000 crabs of their blood in 2021 โ with workers stabbing the animals in the heart and then bleeding out up to half of their blood to manufacture LAL,

I'm curious about the process of cleaning. In my experience urban leaves are full of cigarette butts candy wrappers rubber gloves condoms and other random schmutz

But there are so many leaves especially in more urban areas that get thrown out or burn. I saw whole garbage cans only full of leaves. Wouldn't it be great to use this resource?
nostr:npub1na9vrqljs4v8ucmrvhc9ffx8zp8jsham7hkduw095m4cv3kmsx0q3fcy4w i love this story from TikTok - paper from falling leaves
nostr:npub1xr8gd35szene0r2yvfafr29tjwdedgwd89lnfpmh3pylnygnvd4qmf3q0g this is just brilliant ๐ using leaves for paper helping with deforestation and consuming significantly less energy and water in the production. I hope this spreads and that we're going to produce a lot of paper and paper products that way ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐

A person who abandons a career in order to stay home and raise children is considered not to be living up to his potential โ as if a job title and salary are the sole measure of human worth.Youโll be told in a hundred ways, some subtle and some not, to keep climbing, and never be satisfied with where you are, who you are, and what youโre doing.

โCreating a life that reflects your values and satisfies your soul is a rare achievement. In a culture that relentlessly promotes avarice and excess as the good life, a person happy doing his own work is usually considered an eccentric, if not a subversive. Ambition is only understood if itโs to rise to the top of some imaginary ladder of success. Someone who takes an undemanding job because it affords him the time to pursue other interests and activities is considered a flake.

that screens potential adopters and includes a contract with facility and care requirements and a prohibition on the sale of horses for slaughter.
Finally, due to the controversial nature of the LMP and the myriad of legal, environmental, economic, and social issues it raises, an Environmental Impact Statement is required.

- If removal of horses needs to take place, use science and genetics to determine what horses will be removed. However, a successful fertility control program should mean that there is no need from removals.
Further, instead of selling captured horses via the General Services Administration Online Auctions website, the NPS must develop an adoption program
- Given concerns about its potential for permanent sterilization and injection site abscesses, eliminate the use of GonaCon for the fertility control program. When administering any fertility control program, the NPS must consider the herdโs genetics and bloodlines as well as the safety of mares. Instead of GonaCon, the NPS should implement a fertility control program using PZP that has been proven to be reversible and safe for the mare.
If โnew bloodโ needs to be brought into the herd, introduce horses who are historically significant to the TRNP and prioritize the Nokota horses.ย A 2018 study from Texas A&M found that the historic herd is at risk of inbreeding and recommended introducing new mares and changing removal strategies to preserve genetics and lineages.
- Change the designation of the Theodore Roosevelt horses from โlivestockโ to โwildlife.โ The NPS has never explained why theyโre designated as livestock and doesnโt acknowledge paleontological evidence and mitochondrial DNA analysis supporting the fact that wild horses are a reintroduced native species to this continent.
-Set a minimum herd size of 150 horses to ensure a genetically viable herd, as recommended byย Dr. Gus Cothran, an equine geneticist, for all wild horse herds in the #US .
Now is the time to weigh in for humane management and fair treatment of the historic Theodore Roosevelt wild horses.
While the National Park Service (NPS) is preparing the LMP, it must stop all roundups and removals of the horses and the use of fertility control.
Additionally, an Environmental Analysis (EA) should consider and analyze the following alternatives:
