Also debugging tools are one of the most explored problems in corporate space. Almost nobody seems interested in raw human comprehension.

However what I'm looking for is more akin to an invisible comment that other collaborators do not have to see after you have merged in and pushed, but it will remain on the repo for you and survive things such as merging (though not necessarily conflicts).

Basically I'm trying to put metadata on variables that can survive basic refactorings by coworkers such as renames
