The lag also depends on how the client you’re using is handling data from relays. Whether it is efficient about it. There are multiple clients already for android. Worth trying a couple different ones.
Lag will usually be due to the amount of relays you’re connected to. The global feed on a major free relay is going to be a firehouse of Chinese spam.
I suggest a small number 7-12 of relays and consider paying for a few goods ones.

Way I see it there are only pub keys and the reputation you can build around them until you lose the private key then you either start from scratch or leverage your social graph to “carry over” some reputation.
