I have an American friend, he has lots of guns & ammo. I asked him why, his response was "because I can". I think this is an excellent answer but also I am pretty sure he would even if he "couldn't" (in a compliance sort of way).

Saying no is always an option, but only you can do it for you. The other side of that is negotiating to get yourself what you require from them to be this available for them (equity, significant raise, additional time off they can't call you in during, overtime at a rate you desire anytime you work someone else's shift/they call you in etc..) be creative and ask for what you require. Worse case scenario they say no, best case scenario you realize your worth and move on to better things.
