They've found the "easy button" for the never-ending power grabs...go with "stamp out illicit activities", "to protect Americans" or a similar lie. No one will ever say no to that.....they would be destroyed in the court of public opinion and in the corporate media. Icing on the cake would be to add in "this will hurt us more than it hurts you."

Agreed. For me the nicest part of WoS wasn't an aversion to self-custody, I'm fine with that. The convenience and low fees of the lightning network are a great attribute, but I grew to dislike all of the micromanaging needed to run your own lightning channels, the rebalancing, etc. I played with that for about six months a year or so ago and it got to be a time-consuming hassle. I didn't need to do that when using WoS. Maybe there are better lightning node tools now, I don't know. May need to revisit that topic now that some time has passed since I last looked at it.
