I tried a few different codec installations with no luck, gonna try this one next. I guess you also have to set VLC to emulate whatever region the disc is locked to as well but I forgot that step, so what I already have done might actually work.

This is the one I tried already. Before this I was getting errors that the AACS codec license was expired on my machine, after I got errors that the Blu-ray disc I was trying to play is corrupted.

Will do. Supposedly it's pretty easy to install makemkv and compile the codecs from that to allow VLC to play them, I just need time to play around with that.
I typed sudo apt enough times and she works now
