Future Proposals¶
There are future proposals such as Unspent Transaction Output (UTXO) commitments in the block chain to find a more satisfactory middle-ground for clients between needing a complete copy of the block chain, or trusting that a majority of your connected peers are not lying. UTXO commitments would enable a very secure client using a finite amount of storage using a data structure that is authenticated in the block chain. These type of proposals are, however, in very early stages, and will require soft forks in the network.
Until these types of operating modes are implemented, modes should be chosen based on the likely threat model, computing and bandwidth constraints, and liability in bitcoin value.

a big issue with blockchains is they continue to grow in size, it would be great if you could just reset them at intervals and scrap most of the data

climate change means where it was dry it might rain, global warming means increased rainfall because of increased evaporation, increased co2 means plants use less water and so can increase water retention and access to ground water from greater coverage further increasing potential for rain
i like your faith but the power of the state is not to be underestimated, bitcoin likely will be made illegal in a plethora of ways
the thing i never understood about the problems people had with patreon, and paypal and other such services is why they didnt just use bitcoin? bitcoin was made to solve these problems

It's a complicated issue but pretty nicely explained in a recent podcast (a 3min snippet from it 👇).
tldr: an incomplete contact list gets to become the most recent among relays and this is the result (the nostr protocol does not have a "single truth" so relays and clients cannot be sure what's the latest/best version easily).
