I sent this email to Untappd. *fingers crossed*

Hello Untappd,

I've been a proud Untappd member for over 14 years, joining way back on November 7, 2010. Being social online has evolved. I'd like to take a few minutes and talk to you about it.

In a time when users value freedom, control, and choice, the Nostr protocol offers a new way forward for social platforms. As an open, decentralized communication protocol, Nostr is transforming the social media landscape, allowing platforms like yours to engage users in innovative ways. Here’s why adopting Nostr could be a major step forward for your platform’s growth and user satisfaction.

What is Nostr?

Nostr (Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays) is a decentralized social protocol that empowers users with a unique level of control over their content and online identities. Unlike centralized platforms, Nostr provides users with an open ecosystem where their digital identities and posts are truly portable and interoperable across platforms.

To learn more about Nostr and how it works, you can explore these resources:

Nostr.org – An overview of the protocol.

NostrApps.com – Explore the growing ecosystem of Nostr-compatible applications.

Nostr Protocol GitHub – Access the open-source protocol for detailed technical specifications.

Social Media is Broken - Recorded at the first Nostr Unconference in Costa Rica, March 2023.

The protocol is rapidly gaining momentum and support within the tech community. Notably, Jack Dorsey has contributed $10 million to fund open-source Nostr development, underscoring its potential to redefine how we interact online.

Why Nostr is Important for Platforms Today

Enhanced User Experience: With Nostr, users have the freedom to engage across multiple platforms without needing new logins or fragmented profiles, which can significantly improve satisfaction and loyalty.

User Control: The protocol allows users to take ownership of their data and content, aligning with the growing trend toward user-driven digital experiences.

Cross-Platform Interaction: Nostr provides a unique foundation for seamless interaction with other applications and platforms, enabling collaborative growth and increased engagement opportunities.

Innovation Potential: Nostr’s open-source framework encourages developers to create new and unique features, fostering an ecosystem of innovation that benefits your platform and its users.

Case Study: Fountain’s Success with Nostr

Fountain, a podcast and social interaction platform, recently transitioned its user experience to integrate Nostr. With this move, Fountain expanded its reach, offering users a unified identity and an intuitive experience across decentralized platforms. This transition has attracted new users, driven engagement, and aligned Fountain with the future of social interaction.

What Nostr Can Do for Untappd

Adopting Nostr offers you the chance to:

Attract a Broader Audience: Nostr appeals to digital enthusiasts who are looking for more control and cross-platform compatibility, positioning your platform to attract tech-savvy users.

Encourage Loyalty and Retention: By empowering users with portability and control, you enhance their experience and loyalty.

Drive Innovation and Growth: With the Nostr protocol’s open ecosystem, you’ll gain access to a range of new features and integrations that increase engagement without the typical barriers to innovation.

Useful NIPs (Nostr Implementation Possibilities): These NIPs could be utilized by Untappd.

Every user, beer, and venue could get their own public key / profile.

#WeAreAllApes

——————————

Marshall McLuhan interprets money as a profound extension of the basic human action of “grasping and letting go,” likening it to the physical motion of apes swinging between trees. This analogy reflects his broader framework of understanding technology and media as extensions of human faculties and behaviors.

The Ape Swinging Analogy

1. Grasping and Letting Go: Apes swinging from tree to tree embody a cyclical motion of holding onto a branch and releasing it to reach the next one. This act requires coordination, timing, and trust in the continuity of the environment to support their progress.

2. Money as Symbolic Grasping: For McLuhan, money performs a similar function in the human world. It allows individuals to metaphorically “grasp” value in a tangible form (e.g., coins, paper currency) and “let go” by spending it to acquire goods or services. This exchange process mirrors the physical rhythm of the ape’s motion.

3. Trust in the Medium: Just as an ape trusts that the next branch will hold its weight, humans trust the monetary system to maintain the value of the medium. Without this trust, both the ape’s swing and the financial system would collapse.

McLuhan’s Media Perspective

McLuhan would see money not simply as a tool for trade but as a medium of exchange that shapes human relationships and consciousness:

• Extension of the Hand: Money is a technological extension of the hand’s grasp, enabling trade without the need for direct barter. It abstracts the act of holding onto something of immediate value and turns it into a transferable, symbolic medium.

• Impact on Perception: Money, as a medium, alters our perception of value, time, and relationships. It commodifies time and labor, encouraging humans to think in terms of quantifiable exchanges rather than immediate, personal interactions.

• Cultural Implications: The evolution from barter to money reflects a shift in how societies organize themselves, moving from direct, tangible exchanges to a system mediated by symbols and trust in abstract systems.

A Broader Insight

The grasp-and-let-go metaphor underscores the continuity between human physicality and the technologies we create. Just as apes use the swing to navigate their environment, humans use money as a dynamic medium to move through their social and economic worlds. This analogy reveals how even the simplest actions—rooted in our primal instincts—are amplified and transformed by the media we adopt.
