Close to 50% of all current US home loans were originated in 2020 & 2021. These borrowers were able to obtain the lowest mortgage rates in history as a result of the federal government’s response to Covid.
Since then, the rapid rise in interest rates has caused demand for refinances and purchases to fall to the lowest levels in decades.
While consumer debt rises to all time highs, many home owners can’t qualify to refinance because of the high rates. The next step for many Americans will be bankruptcy or foreclosure.
The next step for many mortgage companies will be more layoffs and shutdowns.
But what’s really fucked up is that anything that will improve the mortgage market, anything that significantly lowers rates, is bad for the economy in the long term.
Whether is more bank failures, a different financial collapse or war, nothing good will cause Jerome Powell to reverse course and lower rates.
And when he does, that pivot, money printing, QE infinity or whatever they call it, will send inflation through the roof.
I don’t know what’s going to happen next or how soon the next crisis will happen. I just know that it will, and I’m glad I have Bitcoin.
If they announced all this shit today why is there still an emergency fed meeting tomorrow?
