In my dept, a much-beloved (by me), more politically activated colleague approaching retirement wrote to everyone saying something like, should we say something, including how the note from the provost didn't push back on this as politically motivated, overreaching nonsense. No one replied. (I 100% had no bandwidth for this even tho I agreed w colleague 100%.) Everything about this is a parable for the modern uni: admin rolls over, fac too tired

Their stance is not "hypocrisy"
It's about power, and in this it's not at all "inconsistent": they choose who gets to make rules & who gets to break them w/o consequence
