It’s so humbling. It’s a quick and powerful way to remind myself how weak I am.

When I imagine an entire village going through Lent together with few artificial distractions I can’t help wonder what that experience must have been like.

People who value fasting should study how Orthodox Christians fast and experiment with that approach, including the focus on the feasts that break the fasts and the rituals and stories around all of it.

Now imagine doing that with an entire community made up of people who are all struggling to do the same thing. Then bring them all together under the same roof multiple times a week to participate in the same rituals together while being annoyed with each other’s quirks and foibles. Have them all examine in minute detail how they failed to live up to their ideals and then expose those failures to someone they trust deeply.

I have fasted many times over the years but never gave any thought to any of that. I definitely haven’t experienced it, but now I find myself thinking about it a lot.

Just a shitty day overall. Tomorrow is going to go so slow. The Friday before a long weekend always takes like three days to be over.
