I have a more untraditional work schedule, for me the weekends are long but lucrative. It makes getting together with friends even harder than usual because nobody has free time during the week. I also work 2nd shift which had transformed my entire family into half-nocturnal weirdos.

However, there is something magical about going to a cafe or restaurant in the early afternoon on an off day because it feels like you get the place entirely to yourself.

Can I Keep It?

Sometimes a poem just follows you home,

like the puppy in the story,

and you have to say to your mother mind,

Can I keep it?

And the better part of you says,

If you can take care of it.

and the best part says,

No boy. Don’t you see it isn’t a dog at all.

A puppy? A pet? Don’t you see it is something wild,

unnamed, untamed, and free.

Feed it, watch it grow, play with it while it stays,

but don’t get attached.

It will, if its true, if it is worth keeping,

go off one day to follow someone else home.

And that’s the way it should be,

if it is really poetry.

I got a little more curious and nostalgic than usual last night so I started dredging up some ancient files that I have on a now abandoned software database and I found this little gem of a poem.

I don't have an author or source or any idea about when or where I picked it up, which is fitting I suppose.

I watched the last full solar eclipse a few years at a park on the banks of the Mississippi. Illinois is the mirror opposite of California for me: I like Northern CA and Southern IL. There are some nice parks that I wouldn't mind revisiting again. Garden of the Gods is a pretty cool place to stargaze.

Author and naturalist Henry David Thoreau on the value of walking in the woods:
