They called it a saddle, the lowest point between two hills or mountains.
It was the perfect resting point for the hike, a spot on the ridge from which one could stand (or sit on a boulder) and see both sides.
A bit chilly it was, with the breeze catching the cool from the snow in the rocky crevices, but oh, how silent and peaceful it was as well!

saddles can be colder because the cold air moves down and can settle & "sit low in the saddle."
whatever the reason, microclimates form. up just a little in elevation could mean warmer instead of colder like most think.
