The Guru's Grace (spiritual teacher) is both external and internal. From the outside, he pushes the mind inwards, and from the inside he pulls the mind towards the Self and helps it keep quiet. That is the grace. There is no difference between God, guru and Self. A guru's help is necessary and useful to start you on the inquiry, but you yourself must pursue it.

The ceaseless, never-ending current of divine Mercy and Compassion ever flows forth; in that current one should bathe.

All this universe which through ignorance appears as of diverse forms, is nothing else but Brahman which is absolutely free

from all limitations of

human thought.

Q: What is the use of a quiet mind?

M: When the mind is quiet, we come to know ourselves as the pure witness.

We withdraw from the experience and its experiencer and stand apart in pure awareness, which is between and

beyond the two.

The personality, based on self-identification, on imagining oneself to be something:

‘I am this, I am that’, continues,

but only as a part of the objective world.

Its identification with the witness snaps.

Q: How to strengthen and purify the sattva?

M: The sattva is pure and strong always. It is like the sun. It may seem obscured by clouds and dust, but only from the point of

view of the perceiver.

Deal with the causes of obscuration, not

with the sun.

Q: What is the use of sattva?

M: What is the use of truth, goodness, harmony, beauty?

They are their own goal.

They manifest spontaneously and effortlessly, when things are left to themselves, are not interfered with,

not shunned, or wanted, or conceptualized, but just experienced in full awareness. Such awareness itself is sattva.

It does not make use of things and people — it fulfils them.

Q: Since I cannot improve sattva, am I to deal with tamas and rajas only?

How do I deal with them?

M: By watching their influence in you and on you. Be aware of them in operation, watch their expressions in your thoughts,

words and deeds, and gradually their grip on you will lessen and the clear light of sattva will emerge. It is neither a difficult, nor a protracted process; earnestness is the only condition of success.

I AM THAT

Talk 76.

Mr. K. S. N. Iyer said that he was not convinced how spiritual life could be reconciled to worldly activities.

The Master in answer cited some verses from Yoga Vasishta. (The original is said to be millions of verses, of which only 32,000 stanzas are now found in the Sanskrit

text. It was condensed to 6,000 and called Laghu Vasishta. The latter has been rendered in Tamil in 2,050 stanzas).

D.: Without the mind concentrating on it the work cannot be performed satisfactorily. How is the mind to be spiritually disposed and the work kept going as well?

M.: The mind is only a projection from the Self, appearing in the waking state. In deep sleep, you do not say whose son you are

and so on. As soon as you wake up you say you are so and so, and recognise the world and so on.

The world is only lokah, lokah = lokyate iti lokah (what is perceived is the world). That which is seen is lokah or the world.

Which is the eye that sees it?

That is the ego which rises and sinks periodically. But you exist always. Therefore That which lies beyond the ego is consciousness - the Self.

In deep sleep mind is merged and not destroyed. That which merges reappears. It may happen in meditation also. But the mind which is destroyed cannot reappear.

The yogi’s aim must be to destroy it and

not to sink in laya. In the peace of dhyana, laya ensues but it is not enough. It must be supplemented by other practices for destroying the mind. Some people have gone into samadhi with a trifling thought and after a long time awakened in the trail of the same thought. In the meantime generations have passed away in the world. Such a yogi has not destroyed his mind. Its destruction is the non-recognition of it as

being apart from the Self. Even now the mind is not. Recognise it. How can you do it if not in everyday activities. They go on automatically.

Know that the mind promoting them is not real but a phantom proceeding from the Self. That is how the mind is destroyed.

Too much study of the scriptures does more harm than good. The important thing is to know the essence of the scriptures. After that, what is the need of books? One should learn the essence and then dive deep in order to realize God.

The spoken and the unspoken are not the Truth, the known and the unknown are not the Truth. If there is only one indivisible, all comprehensive Absolute, how can there be objects, senses, mind, intellect ?

The distinction between

Shiva (Consciousness/Intelligence) and Shakti (Power/Energy) is really a distinction without a difference.

Shiva and Shakti are one, just as fire and its burning power are one.

Shiva and Shakti are one, just as milk and the whiteness of milk are one.

Shiva and Shakti are one, just as a gem and its brightness are one.

You cannot conceive of one without the other, or make a difference between them.

What is your opinion about my Master?

What a question to ask !

The space in Bombay is asked

what is its opinion of the space in Poona.

The names differ, but not the space.

The word 'Master ' is merely an address.

Who lives under the address?

You ask questions when you are in trouble.

Enquire who is giving trouble and to whom.

Today I am going to tell you what is 'Guru.' People have lots of erronious notions about it. The word Guru means 'one who dispels the darkness of ignorance.' Gurudeva dwells in the innermost chamber of our heart. When you receive guidance from the Divine Being within you, your doubts and fears vanishes.

You no longer feel a need to validate your path. Inner light infuses your heart with an unshakable conviction. When the lamp of conviction is lit by the Divine, you become immesaurably strong.

The Guru will help you in identifying your strengths and weaknesses. He will help you learn how to overcome your weaknesses and cultivate inner strength.
