The Java world is, unfortunately, way ahead in GUI stuff. The current defacto standard is JavaFX and it is nicer, more modern, more complete, more extensible and much more popular.
I recommend hybrid Java/Haskell for a GUI application, where the Java "main" loads a Haskell native library and the Haskell code calls into JavaFX via JNI.

The `jni` and `jvm` libraries do a good job of dealing with JNI low-level stuff. I've experimented a bit and it seems feasible but nothing completed yet.
