From 2024, vaccination against Covid will be on the Ministry of Health's annual PNI calendar

The dose of the vaccine against Covid-19 will become part of the National Immunization Program (PNI) from 2024. The announcement was made this Tuesday (31) during an event held by the Ministry of Health.

The Lula Government's recommendation will prioritize children from 6 months to under 5 years of age and the groups most at risk of developing severe forms of the disease: the elderly, immunocompromised, pregnant and postpartum women, health workers, people with comorbidities, indigenous people, riverside dwellers and quilombolas, people living in long-term institutions and their workers, people with permanent disabilities, people deprived of liberty over 18 years of age, teenagers and young people complying with socio-educational measures, employees of the deprivation of liberty system and people living on the streets.

The inclusion has already been evaluated by the Covid-19 Immunization Technical Advisory Chamber (CTAI).

“It is an important change, in line with the World Health Organization [WHO], in which the vaccine against Covid-19 now incorporates our National Immunization Program. During the pandemic, a parallel program was created to operationalize the Covid-19 vaccine, outside of our national program. What we did this year was to bring the vaccine against Covid-19 into the National Immunization Program. The vaccine is now recommended in the children's calendar. For all children born or who are in Brazil, aged between 6 months and under 5 years, the vaccine becomes mandatory in the vaccination calendar”, said the ministry's Health and Environment Surveillance Secretary, Ethel Maciel.

The Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade, highlighted that all immunizers have proven efficacy and safety by Anvisa and follow guidelines from the WHO and the Ministry of Health for application.

“In addition, vaccines go through a rigorous quality study process before being incorporated into the SUS,” added Trindade.
