Bird of the day: Eurasian hobby
Adults are slate-grey above with a dark crown and two short black moustachial stripes. The throat is unstreaked white, thighs and undertail coverts are unstreaked rufous and rest of the underparts are whitish with black streaks. Close views enable the red "trousers" and vent to be seen. Sexes are similar. Juveniles are generally much browner, with scaled upper parts and streaked buffy thighs and undertail coverts. The hobby has a distinct first-summer plumage.
This falcon is 29β36 cm (11β14 in) in length with a wingspan of 74β84 cm (29β33 in) and a weight of 175β285 g (6.2β10.1 oz).

Bird of the day: Australasian shoveler
Courtship in New Zealand starts around August which involves vocalisations from the drake (male) accompanied with head-bobbing whilst swimming toward the duck (female). The most heard vocalisations are from the drakes in the form of a "Sock, sock-sock, sock, sock-sock". Often several drakes will pursue an already paired duck: Generally the mated males are aggressive and will not tolerate this behavior from the bachelors, and fighting may ensue. Courtship flights are common in the morning and evenings mostly, where the duck is followed in a short rapid flight by one or more (usually two) drakes. This tests the speed and agility of the drakes. The duck may be biased in picking the 'winner' in these tests however, especially if she has paired with one of the competitors. She will even sometimes excrete mid-flight on a pursuing male if he is especially not to her fancy. There is a clear and unexplained sex ratio difference with a lot more males to females. This difference is not present in broods of ducklings however. Males with a lot of white breast feathers are not usually paired. These white feathers are often a sign of an older shoveler as first year males almost never have them. Mating will occur as early as August, though nesting rarely happens until at least October.

Daily Roman History:
During the First Punic War Rome did not have a navy to speak of. A major issue for fighting a war over an island against a maritime trade empire such as Carthage. To rectify this Rome managed to get their hands on a beached Carthaginian vessel, and moved it inland. From here they reverse engineered it to build a craft of their own and set them in a lake to train the new sailors how to operate it. Even with the new ships they still lacked the experience in naval warfare, so to compensate for this they designed a device called a Corvus, basically a boarding ramp attached to their ship which was deployed when close enough to an enemy vessel. Once in place the Roman troops would move over and turn the sea battle into an infantry skirmish, which the Romans far excelled at.

Daily Roman History:
Fluctuating between ignored but accepted cult, and actively persecuted faction depending on the attitude of the ruler Christianity began its journey to official state religion of the Roman Empire under the Emperor Constantine the Great. After the collapse of the Tetrarchy several claimants began a civil war for sole rule, among which was Constantine. According to legend one night he had a dream which said "In this sign thou shalt conquer", the sign in question was the Chi Rho, an early Christian symbol. Shortly after this vision he had his army mark their shields with the symbol and adopted it as a standard. 'Under this sign' the battle of Milvian Bridge was fought which won Constantine his Imperial title. One interesting note is though Constantine was a practicing Christian he was not baptized until his final days, perhaps a way to absolve himself of all sin before death.
