Bird of the day: American Oystercatcher

American oystercatchers open clams and other prey by quickly jabbing their bills inside the bivalve's shell and severing the muscle that pulls the shell halves shut. Then they eat the soft parts inside. Young chicks will dive and swim underwater to escape predators.

During the breeding season, the American oystercatcher can be found in coastal habitats including sand or shell beaches, dunes, salt marshes, marsh islands, mudflats, and dredge spoil islands made of sand or gravel.During migration and winter, they are found feeding in mud or salt flats that are exposed by the tide. They are also found on shellfish beaches at this time

Daily Roman History:

Emperor Caligula, being completely insane, had a habit of humiliating and insulting the Senate whenever possible. Some of his favorite ways was to invite them to a large party. He would then take the wives of the visiting senators to another room to have his way, while leaving the poor senator to sit awkwardly alone. Another trick he pulled was trying to apppite his favorite horse as a senator, implying he would be better at the job than them.

Daily Roman History:

Rome, for all it's eventual grandeur and breadth, started as basically a den of scum and villainy, with most of its early inhabitants being male, and bandits at that. Realizing this will eventually become an issue with the city's survival, no new births mean no new citizens, the legendary co-founder of the city, Romulus, devised a plan. Under the guise of a festival to one of the Gods nearby cities were invited to participate in the event. Sometime during the proceedings the Roman men sprung and literally stole the women, mostly from the Sabine tribe, and chased the men away. Naturally, the other tribes didn't take kindly to this and numerous confrontations were fought over the next few years, but no clear victor was ever decided. Eventually, during one such attack the captured woman came forth and called for an end to the fighting, they did not want to see their fathers and brothers killed, but now they had husbands and children in the new city and just wished for peace. This seemed to work, and the Sabines joined the Romans to form one nation, ruled by Romulus and the Sabine king Titus Tatius. The Sabine came to settle the Capitoline hill, one of the Seven Hills of Rome.

Bird of the day: Common kingfisher

Kingfishers eat mainly fish, chiefly minnows and sticklebacks, but they also take aquatic insects, freshwater shrimps and tadpoles. They close their eyes as they dive into the water, so they are fishing blind! They bob their heads before diving to accurately judge the depth of the fish.
