Single dads are often in custody of children because the mother died or was so insanely cracked out and abusive the state actually gave them custody.

That is to say, single moms are often by choice (or fucking out of wedlock for fun or to try to capture a randomly selected guy). Single dads are often not.

That doesn't cover all cases, but is the broad impression of the two types I think.

Forget not having the opportunity. How many just won't care to ever try? You can coast through a comp sci degree while trying to do TikTok and YouTube and esports and whatever else and still come out the other end without too much damage if it doesn't work out.

Why would you try? The upside of effort is, what? A slightly cushier 60 hour a week job for the same set of tin pot dictator bosses whose dream you are working toward instead of your own? There's no incentive.
