Charcoal has some organic content in it. Biochar should be pure carbon.

Works well to propagate plants and grow water plants, I usually don’t stock as much fish as I should.
It is fun to mess with though, a pump on a timer to flood the upper bed is fool proof.

Do you mulch (not volcano mound style). I’ll typically do a few inch donut around the tree. Helps keep moisture around it. I’ve also started using biochar with plantings. We have heavy clay soil, looking to improve with biochar.
I’ll do cuttings in aquaponics system, it hasn’t worked the best, but super easy.
If you want to have good success make a propagation bed. I have some videos on it, sand/perlite bed in the shade. Irrigation timer turns on dramm misters every 10 minutes for 10 seconds.
The cuttings are dipped in rooting hormone, depending on the plant you can get 50% success.
