Thanks for that C.S. Lewis quote, will check out the book.
I don't think it's the conscience of the supervillain that would be comparatively helpful though. Rather, I think that injustice has the effect of rallying good people against the supervillain, whereas the superbenefactor may have hoodwinked or confused sufficiently many good people to make resistance much less effective.
What's more terrifying, a powerful supervillain doing their best to harm everyone, or a powerful superbenefactor doing their best to force everyone to act in the common good

I agree with the sentiment, however the St. Paul basilica may not be the best example to follow. It was extravagantly expensive, and the catholic church financed it in large part by selling "indulgences" (basically foregiveness for your sins in exchange of money), which was one of the main factors that led to the protestant reformation. So yes, let's build nice things again, but not at the cost of a religious war that lasts for centuries 😅
Dunno, I see some healthy rivalries for sure, but I don't think I'm friends with many people who don't want to see me succeed. Likewise, I can get jealous of a friend's progress, while at the same time being happy for them, as well as inspired to progress myself
