On the differences between Fedimint and Cashu from my perspective.

Fedimint is federated (meaning the ecash mechanics and the on-chain multisig), Cashu is always a single mint operator with Lightning abilities. Both are custodial in that sense. However, the rugpull risk is reduced in the federated model but it's also (often a lot) harder to implement as a programmer (it's a truly great achievement!).

Cashu is more about the ecash protocol itself. We're writing libraries in different programming languages and we have Python, Golang, JavaScript and Typescript so far. The goal is to design a simple ecash protocol that everyone can easily implement into their custodial Bitcoin application and benefit from the ecash protocol (near-perfect privacy and other benefits).

The first few examples so far are

NOSTRGRAM UPDATE - CLOUDFLARE BOT MITIGATION AND PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTS

Hello again Nogs! It's update time. I already posted a bit about this update, but wanted to make a formal announcement for it and add to what I've said so far.

NostrGram is now using CloudFlare for bot mitigation due to a large number of bots spamming the heck out of the site. VPN access was temporarily disabled while CloudFlare spun up and kicked in. Now it's active and the effects look really good so far. 🤞

There are some additional performance benefits of using CloudFlare, particularly for mobile users. I'm using CloudFlare's service to resize and compress images, which is already making a big difference in bandwidth usage. I had something like this built into NG itself, but it didn't work particularly well because a lot of the images weren't able to be compressed with the library I was using. CloudFlare is doing a much better job.

I'm also using a few other CloudFlare compression options which are reducing bandwidth and speeding up delivery and performance. A big benefit to mobile users especially.

All of this is possible thanks to you donating your ⚡, so thank you very much for your continued generosity. 🙏 I had someone ask where to donate, so wanted to make it clear: zapping any post by me (or using the Lightning icon on my Profile) is fine.

But BOLT 12 will take it even further.

If you didn’t already know, BOLT stands for Basis of Lightning Technology.

BOLTs are like BIPs for the Lightning Network.

BOLT 12 is already supported experimentally on Blockstream’s Core Lightning and is also being actively implemented by the teams at Acinq, LDK, & Lightning Labs.

BOLT 12 is distinct from BOLT 11 (the current invoicing spec on LN) in a bunch of different ways.

The main component of BOLT 12 is a new type of invoice called an “offer”.

An offer can be thought of as a ‘meta’ invoice- an invoice on top of an invoice.

Offers are useful because they are persistent and static.

This means that you can use them for donation pages, billboards, and zapping fellow plebs on Nostr!

BOLT 11 invoices, on the other hand, can only be used once, and must be generated in real-time.

BOLT 12 offers also allow you to create recurring subscriptions denominated in sats OR dollars.

This could be used to fund paid relays or creators (Patreon style), and for other subscription services.

BOLT 12 is Lightning native, which means that it’s different from LNURL/Static LN addresses because you aren’t required to run a web server to generate invoices.

Your Lightning node handles all the work.

This allows for fully self-custodial zapping⚡️

TLDR;

BOLT 12 would be a dramatic improvement for Lightning and Nostr.

BOLT 12 allows for:

-Subscriptions denominated in USD (but settled in sats)

-Static Zapping

-Self-Custodial Zapping

Before you even buy your first satoshis, you can stack a few extra sats slowly but surely every day.

There used to be “Bitcoin faucets” where you could collect whole bitcoins every day 🤯 those days may be gone, but if you hang onto these sats long enough, it might not even matter ⚡️

Note: I am not going to share any referral links here. I just want you stacking 💜🤙

So, a few apps I use daily include:

sMiles Bitcoin: they have a couple of spin-wheel/faucets you can use every 12 hours, and they also pay you satoshis for walking. I think it’s something around 2 sats per 1K steps.

Lolli: daily “treasure box” with usually 20-100 sats, as well as shopping rewards (% back in Bitcoin) if you link your fiat cards.

Bitcoin Magazine app: they pay you 5 sats per article - it’s a great way to learn more about Bitcoin philosophy, technicals, and finance while earning sats to read.

Fountain: listen to podcasts and earn sats for chilling. You can also stream sats back to content creators ✨

My personal favorite: Fold. Free daily spin wheel, to start. But the kicker is the debit card with Bitcoin rewards, rewards in BTC for buying gift cards, and you can even pay your bills by linking the card to PayPal and it’ll earn you sats back.

It’s f’ing ridiculous and significant way to stack harder 🤙
